I appear to have lost the old threads, so...
What are we watching now?
Making a dent in my "to be watched" box, I just finished my first
viewing of Gurren Lagann. Not a bad little series, but nowhere near as
good as all the hype had lead me to expect, even allowing for half the
hype being over-hype.
(And am I the only one who thought Yoko was sexier the way she dressed
in the last third of the series than the way she dressed in the first
half?)

Still watching Golgo 13, TV series
And just acquired a whole set of 12 Ghibli movies, (Japanese language +
Spanish dub + Spanish subtitles), they were on sale, now I need the time
to watch them

Heh - me too. I'm trying to find some anime to watch with my 4 year old
daughter, so I've been going through "the box". I just completed watching
Risky/Safety, which I actually enjoyed this time. The first time I watched
it, I skimmed the first couple of episodes and went... meh... okay.
This time, once I got past the start - it seemed to pick up for me, and I
enjoyed the series. For me, a good hallmark is "Would I want to see more?"
and for this one, the answer is yes. My 4 year old kinda liked it, but I
think Risky bothers her, so we haven't watched much of it together.
I also got my blu-ray of Studio Ghibli's "Kokuriko-zaka Kara" or "From Up On
Poppy Hill". I enjoyed it, but it's one of the more reality based, dialog
driven Studio Ghibli movies - more like Only Yesterday or Ocean Waves than
Ponyo, Spritied Away or Totoro - so I don't think she'll enjoy it. Also,
there's a plot element - which I won't discuss here - that I might have a
hard time explaining to her, so kind of a pass for a 4 year old. (She likes
Ponyo and Arrietty, if that helps. ^_^)
Cheers,
Paul

Just finished "Twin Spica". Quite good adaptation of the manga, although
it leaves off about halfway through the story (and still had to leave
out a lot of the details). [8/10]
Last weekend I received my latest orders from both RightStuf and
CDJapan:
- Hatsukoi Limited
- Hidamari Sketch x Special
- K-ON!! 1
- K-ON! The Movie (Limited Edition)
- Kimi ni Todoke Premium Edition Vol. 3
- Lupin the 3rd Season 1
- Mahoromatic Ultimate Collection
Aside from that I'm watching:
- Binbougami ga!
Best show this season, hands down. The bitching and bickering between
the has-it-all-by-sucking-up-everyone's-fortune heroine and the
annoyed-like-heck-by-it-all poverty god is just awesome. Zickenterror!
3 episodes watched. [9/10]
- Moyashimon Returns
As good as the first season.
3 episodes watched. [9/10]
- Natsuyuki Rendezvous
I like this melancholic romance between a young widow and her even
younger suitor, who is pestered by the ghost of her late husband.
3 episodes watched. [8/10]
- Kokoro Connect
This story about a group of friends inadvertently switching bodies
back and forth turned out more interesting than I thought it would be.
3 episodes watched. [7/10]
- Chouyaku Hyakuninisshu: Uta Koi
I like the art, but just like with "Joshiraku" below I feel like I'm
missing a lot. Probably because I'm not familiar enough with classic
Japanese poetry (and the people who wrote it). Will try another
episode, but I guess if it doesn't "click" by then, I'll drop the
show.
4 episodes watched. [7/10]
- Joshiraku
Not sure what to make of this after 2 episodes. It's not bad, but I
have the nagging feeling that I'm missing lots of things. Will try at
least one or two more episodes.
2 episodes watched. [6/10]
- Chitose Get You!
It's somewhat similar to "Hanamaru Youchien". Nothing special, but the
first couple episodes have been fun to watch, so I'm sticking with it
for now.
4 episodes watched. [6/10]
- Campione!
A tad more interesting than most of the recent harem comedies, and I
like the characters so far. The plot as well as the motivation of the
main character are somewhat lacking, though.
4 episodes watched. [6/10]
- Sword Art Online
Totally undecided about this one. The idea of being unable to leave a
game is kinda interesting (although not really new), and the art is
quite good. However, the main character is wearing the "troubled hero"
cliché far too openly for my taste. Also, shouldn't their physical
bodies be starved by now? Does time flow differently in that virtual
world? Are things actually the way they told in the beginning? And
where is this supposed to go when they haven't even cleared the first
level yet?
3 episodes watched. [6/10]
Continuing from previous seasons:
- Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki
29 episodes watched. [9/10]
- Hyouka
13 episodes watched. [8/10]

The Anime was done long before the series ended its run as a manga. I did
like how they ended the Manga. I hope it gets made as a movie at some
point.

Animate in Akiba had a special section on one of the upper floors devoted to
the K-On movie release last week. I was able to see it in Japan last
December durring release. It was my first Movie in Japan. Overall, I liked
it. Probably the last go around for K-On as an Anime.

I got to see episode 3 first run this past weekend. It shows at like 1:30
AM in Japan. I happned to wake up early due to jet lag and got to see it.
I think it is full of things that only a native Japanese would get first
time round.

I've been reading more manga than watching anime (my first immersive foray
into manga), but just finished up _Star Driver_.
I'm curious: how deeply was folks reaction to _Star Driver_ affected by whether
they'd seen _Revolutionary Girl Utena_?
I went into it knowing nothing at all about it - I had saved a fansub
of it because Dave Baranyi had liked it in one of his season end
recaps (thanks, Dave!) - and I finally got around to watching it. I
had some vague thoughts that it was a space science fiction anime -
but it wasn't.
My view of it went from
What is this stuff?
to
It's a cheap Utena rip-off.
to
It's Utena light - with conflicts more understandable (less abstract).
to
It's a complement to Utena - looking at many of the same issues but
from a different viewpoint, meant to contrast with Utena.
As you can see, all of my reactions were in terms of Utena, which is why
I'm curious as to how people who haven't seen Utena reacted.
I need to watch both Utena and _Star Driver_ again (I just ordered a
copy of _Star Driver_ from RightStuf on their current sale.) There's
a lot here to think about - one of my major questions is why I regard
Utena as being primarily a feminist revolution theme, but with the
sexes reversed in _Star Driver_, I regard it as being a more general
youth revolution theme. Is that my bias or intentional?

Thanks for the comments, both of you.
_Star Driver_ won't appeal to all; the real world plot, IMO, is somewhat
of a mess - from reading reviews and interviews now, it looks like the
background was much more developed than fully made it into the show.
You have to enjoy relating the surreal world conflicts/themes to the real
world plot to like the show, I think.
I don't really understand the comparisons to _RahXephon_ that I too have
seen a couple of. They seem very different to me. The protagonist in
_Star Driver_ is knowledgable and self-assured, for instance.
If I had to compare to a more modern series than Utena, it probably would be
_Mawaru PenguinDrum_, but with the surreal world portions being much more
important (and multi-leveled themselves).

Finished watching "Princess Resurrection". I rather enjoyed it. Kind of
what if "The Addams Family" were an action show instead of a sitcom. Good
pacing, quirky and fun characters, and it doesn't turn into the typical,
interminable monster of the week show. It also doesn't turn into a harem
show.
Been watching "Yamato 2199" as the fansubs have been coming out. Where
2010's live film is a reboot in the same vein as "Battlestar Galactica",
"Yamato 2199" is a remake, sometimes scene for scene, of the original
Yamato TV series but with modern animation, better pacing, and
contemporary values. Most notable of the last is the more evenly balanced
gender ratio of the crew around the ship.
"Agent Aika". I hadn't seen it before this week. Now I have. I liked
"Najica: Blitz Tactics" better. "Aika" isn't bad (despite the absurdity
of ALL women in the world wearing miniskirts and white cotton panties, an
absurdity carried over into "Najica") but the plot seemed a bit disjointed
at times.

I'm currently on a re-watching binge, at a rate of one DVD or tape
a night. Right now, it's Kyo Kara Maoh! I'm working on. Before that,
I did Generator Gawl, Mirage of Blaze, Heat Guy J, Last Exile, and
Lost Universe, not necessarily in that order.

Yawara episode 98. Nothing special just the Kazumatsuri x Yawara first
kiss. Grandpa´s machinations to get Yawara to the next
Japanese National Judo tourney. Other stuff of interest.
Came along as I was beginning to watch the last licensed
DVD.
Waiting for Genshiken Nidame Chapter 79 but bad raws are
slowing down Spore´s work again. Oguie Maniax covers the chapter
79 action in the blog with some illustrations and lots of text.
Misfile registered its first kiss this weekend between the
main characters this week.
Piggy on Sinfest is jonesing on porn.
Sluggy Freelance is getting ready for a RL convention so
the whole ongoing script is getting no play.
Besides that Tokyo Crazy Paradise is dealing with bad boys
(and girls I guess) from the elite and the bottom of society. Volume
2 chapter 6.
Waiting on release and shipping of Genshiken Nidame
on September 4.
Waiting on next volume of Cross Game which should be #8.
Bunny Rock is scheduled I guess but not showing up here.
Bakuman 14 should be out soon.
Got, read and gave away volume 3 of Wandering Son last
month. That is Hourou Mousou for the people who know how
to search. This is a high quality production by a well-known
Canadian(onward Maple Leaf) graphics publisher.
Not reading too much but Superman by Larry Tye can take
a fast reader several days. Why would an anime fan be interested?
Only because Supes has an interesting story regarding his creation,
publication, and exploitation. Tye covers the details of artist´s
and author´s struggles for publication, and for recognition aka
income. Also with the comparison the informed can make between
US´s artistic arrangements and the mangaka´s situation in Japan.
Some enterprising Japanese company or combination should
be doing the space novels of Elizabeth Moon. Not as long or complex
as her great fantasy work but... better than Good Enough for the
medium. And I have couple of other fantasy novelists who have
interesting premises but I will spare that for a future
disquisition.
Dave Baranyi should keep it up. And remember even with
moe 99% of everything is going to be worthless except for the
moment. He saves people so much time he should get an award.
Manbow Papa is also providing great input to the newsgroup.
Rob Kelk is a hard worker and a sparkplug for the group.
after 10 years of interest still checking stuff in the Primer.

NHK aired a marathon run of Twelve Kingdoms as a summer
special last month while Shincho-sha has begun reprinting
the original novel written by ONO Fuyumi in bunkobon format
this July. The book will be published in twelve volumes
including a collection of short stories and a completely
new writing. Visit http://www.shinchosha.co.jp/12kokuki/
if you are interested in (Japanese page only).
Ono is a thriller writer and the first volume "Masho no ko"
[The devil child] was planned to be a stand-alone novel
in which demons destroy a highschool building killing
many students and teachers. The book is animated as a
story of Taiki, episode 15 "Kaze no umi, Meikyuu no kishi".
Then as the follow up, she begun to write the Twelve Kingdom
series two decades ago. I have read only three volumes but
the difference between novel and anime is already prominent.
For example, the novel doesn't have Sugimoto and Asano.
Ono's novel is a great epic that has a lot of characters,
countries and events. The anime adaptation of the novel had
to be very difficult. The script was done by AIKAWA Sho, and
he modified the original stories largely as he did for
Hagaren years later. Among his scripts, I like Twelve Kingdoms
the most, though. Aikawa is writing script for "Eureka-seven
AO" now.
The rerun of Cowboy Bebop begun in Teletama last month.
Although the visual quality of the series was one of the best
at the first run two decades ago, it isn't to today's standard.
The animation and stories are still my favorite.

Hmm, not much. Still following "Casshern Sins" on AdultSwim, and slowly re-watching Mushi-Shi when the mood strikes.
Oh, actually, I'm watching a lot of the Sat morning stuff on Cartoon Network, WB, and I found an interesting enough one on HUB network called Kaijudo. I never saw any of the kids stuff, I was an adult when it came out. I finally saw all of YuGiOh!on WB.
I just ordered the Fullmetal OVA of short things that you guys were talking about ages ago when it came out. I figured for $10.99 it was worth it to add to my collection.
