X-FIles 2 only took in a little over $1 million on Monday. That damn
"Dark Night" took in over $10 million the same day! X-Files 2 went from
#4 on the list to #6. I guess it was a bad idea to open this movie in
the Summer. It should have opened in Oct-Nov when there is much less
competition.

I don't think it would have mattered.

I've developed two theories on why Fox released this against the DK:

1. The hoped people would see the lines for DK, decide to wait and
hop over to XF

or

2. They wanted to stick it to Carter and say "We told you so..."

Not much truth to either, but what the heck.

This was supposed to be a summer blockbuster. ALL the early early press
touted The Highly Anticipated Return. Who was it, EW? USA Today? somebody,
listed it as one of the Top Seven Movies You Should See This Summer. The
secrecy. The extreme measures to gaurd against spoilage. All intriguing,
adding to the mystery, adding to the **anticipation**. This was supposed
to be a BIG SUMMER HIT.

There may be mucho backpedaling now--and I find it interesting that GA
barley mentioned it on Letterman Monday night--that this was "low budget",
under the radar, etc. Bullshit. To use a popular term, "it is what it is".
From what I've seen/read, the fans are, for the most part, wildly happy.
Satisfied.
On second viewing last night, I advised the others in the theatre (all five
of them": to stay throught the credits. "Bye!" I waved. A guy turned aroud
and said to me "I think we just got the big send-off, what do you think?"

I think it's been a hell of a ride.

It wouldnt have matterd I dont think. IWTB is more like a tv episode
than a theatrical movie. It should do fine on DVD where its better
suited.

True. It is not simple minded crap like most theatrical releases.
And it will eek out a small profit. Again, unlike most Hollywood
movies.

The Dark Knight and on Comic Con weekend was a bit stupid. The latter
isn't that big of a deal I guess, but still. The X FILES really isn't
counter programming to The Dark Knight.

I think movies like this get lost in the shuffle. I didn't see very
many TV commercials for it. It would have been better to launch it in
a dead period with a better promotion leading up to it. Maybe a week
or 2 before Iron Man.

The movie wasn't a big budget summer movie, as Ebert said, it was an
old styled thriller. People who were turned off by the disaster of
the last 2 years of the series and/or casual fans who simply forgot
about the X FILES needed a lot more prodding to get interested. A
dead two week period in April or November or something might have
worked

Of course, it could simply be that all of the arguments are moot and
that the way the series ended and the movie delayed meant it was over
as a "thing".

Still, I would have thought it would do better than 10 million. Hard
to believe Sex and the City is THAT much more popular (though again,
it is far more recent).

Even a revamped Miami Vice with a bad cast IMO and setting it in a new
decade made 200 million.

I was on vacation for the major part of the time it was in theaters,
got back, and it had disappeared. Winter release would have been MUCH
more doable for me to catch it early and expensive versus late and
cheap.

The film makers don't make much back after the first couple weeks,
IIRC, whereas the only real profit the theaters get in the first week
or two is popcorn sales.

What happened with the credits? I just saw the movie last night.
Unfortunately, I was there with a grumpy person who didn't have the
patience for sitting in front of a blank screen for who knows how
long, so we ended up leaving. What did we miss?

Well, I didn't, so could you tell me what happened with the credits?

You see Mulder and Scully from a helicopter, laying on a boat - they
look up and wave.
Probably the last time we'll ever see the characters, and they're not
having to hide from black helicopters :)

You forgot to add that it looked like they were in the tropics, and
Scully was in a Black Bikini! I am not sure if it is the last time we
will ever see them, maybe they were just on Vacation! ;-)

Thanks. So, how long did you have to stare at the grey screen before you
saw that? :)

Not long really - 3 minutes? It wasn't just credits, the weird shapes
eventually turn into a shot from a helicopter looking down at the sea.

Oh, well - I guess I'll have to wait for the DVD. If the theatrical
release continues to do as badly as it has, that shouldn't be a very
long wait.
