The researchers, whose identities were not disclosed, became so sick they were hospitalized, the report stated. The timing of the event is noteworthy. The three lab workers, the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>Journal<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>noted, were hospitalized in November 2019, \u201croughly when many epidemiologists and virologists believe SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the pandemic, first began circulating around the central Chinese city of Wuhan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, the identities of the three lab workers allegedly hospitalized were revealed. US government sources identified the three lab researchers as Ben Hu, Yu Ping, and Yan Zhu,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.substack.com\/p\/first-people-sickened-by-covid-19\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">according to<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>recent reporting from Michael Shellenberger, Matt Taibbi, and Alex Gutentag in<span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>Public<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Atlantic<\/em><span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2023\/06\/covid-origin-theories-rival-data-evidence\/674495\/\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">noted<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>the \u201cextraordinary\u201d nature of the findings, if true.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese proposed patient SARS-CoV-zeroes aren\u2019t merely employees of the virology institute; they\u2019re central figures in the very sort of research that lab-leak investigators have been scrutinizing since the start of the pandemic,\u201d writes Daniel Engber. \u201cTheir names appear on crucial papers related to the discovery of new, SARS-related coronaviruses in bats, and subsequent experimentation on those viruses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hu\u2019s name is especially important. The man many are dubbing \u201cpatient zero\u201d didn\u2019t just work at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. According to documents published by the White Coat Waste Project obtained via a FOIA request, Hu was receiving US grant money to perform gain-of-function research on coronaviruses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe funding came in three grants totaling $41 million, doled out by USAID and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, or NIAID, the agency then headed by Dr. Anthony Fauci,\u201d the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>Intercept<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2023\/06\/17\/covid-origin-wuhan-patient-zero\/\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">reports<\/a>. \u201cHu is listed as an investigator on the grants.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloaded medium-zoom-image\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/FZVb4W1gt-pZ1kevkC3Wg6d9ZLxeWP1lBiQpXdetJPrqL7o2sSqi5XuoM0WWyV-mX5L7pb7z2Kwz7KX9SriixKYofexg8Lt0yUM_WeTS-Jj8x-ybapbUbrv2w2vpEUM1W-oyzR-AdXuJfl7W6G3fa5w\" alt=\"\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" data-zoom-target=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/FZVb4W1gt-pZ1kevkC3Wg6d9ZLxeWP1lBiQpXdetJPrqL7o2sSqi5XuoM0WWyV-mX5L7pb7z2Kwz7KX9SriixKYofexg8Lt0yUM_WeTS-Jj8x-ybapbUbrv2w2vpEUM1W-oyzR-AdXuJfl7W6G3fa5w\" data-zoom=\"\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-1\">Pretty Specific Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>These are not the only important details that have many suspecting Hu is \u201cpatient zero.\u201d There\u2019s also the fact that he was a top lieutenant of Shi Zhengli, a scientist literally named \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-chinas-bat-woman-hunted-down-viruses-from-sars-to-the-new-coronavirus1\/\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">batwoman<\/a>\u201d for her extensive research on viruses taken from bats in caves. And then there\u2019s the fact that unreleased intelligence reportedly says the sick lab workers lost their sense of smell\u2014one of the telltale signs of COVID.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t medically prove that they had COVID but that\u2019s some pretty specific symptoms,\u201d Josh Rogin of the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>Washington Post<\/em><span>&nbsp;<\/span>noted in<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/honestly-with-bari-weiss\/id1570872415?i=1000532793045\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">an interview with Bari Weiss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, as<span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>Science<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/ridiculous-says-chinese-scientist-accused-being-pandemic-s-patient-zero\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">notes<\/a>, Hu is an \u201cappealing suspect\u201d because he \u201cwas a lead author on a 2017 paper in PLOS Pathogens describing an experiment that created chimeric viruses by combining genes for surface proteins from bat coronaviruses that would not grow in cultures with the genome of one that did. This paper has received intense scrutiny because it was partially funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) \u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>None of this is a \u201cdefinitive answer,\u201d of course. And Hu claims the entire story is \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent news about so-called \u2018patient zero\u2019 in WIV are absolutely rumors and ridiculous,\u201d&nbsp; Hu<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/ridiculous-says-chinese-scientist-accused-being-pandemic-s-patient-zero\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">wrote in an email<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>to<span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>Science<\/em>. \u201cIn autumn 2019, I was neither sick nor had any symptoms related to COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That Hu would deny involvement in the incident is hardly surprising.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n<div id=\"om-fqmeg7lcejd7fy5oro5r-holder\">\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"om-lxkcubhhqwmdm0lkjkbp-holder\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cDenials of culpability and dismissals of evidence by a likely culpable person cannot be taken at face value,\u201d<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/R_H_Ebright\/status\/1673017751148056576\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">said<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>Rutgers Professor Richard H. And I\u2019m not just talking about Ben Hu.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s little reason to believe the Chinese government would be forthcoming if their investigation determined they were responsible for COVID-19. Similarly, there\u2019s little reason to believe the US government, which was funding China\u2019s coronavirus research, would be eager to get to the truth either.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s not forget there was a serious effort by the US government to prevent Americans from even openly<span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>speculating<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>about the lab-leak theory. In February 2021, almost certainly at the behest of federal agencies, which<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2023\/01\/19\/how-the-cdc-became-the-speech-police\/\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">were working with social media platforms<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>to combat COVID \u201cmisinformation,\u201d Facebook announced it would remove posts that suggested \u201cCOVID-19 is man-made or manufactured.\u201d Months later, after it became widely accepted that the lab-leak theory was not \u201ca crackpot idea\u201d after all, Facebook was<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/05\/26\/facebook-ban-covid-man-made-491053\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">forced to backtrack<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today many agencies within the federal government itself concede that the lab-leak theory isn\u2019t just possible, but the most likely cause of COVID.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department of Energy and the Federal Bureau of Investigation assess that a laboratory-associated incident was the most likely cause of the first human infection with SARS-CoV-2,\u201d<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.gov\/files\/ODNI\/documents\/assessments\/Report-on-Potential-Links-Between-the-Wuhan-Institute-of-Virology-and-the-Origins-of-COVID-19-20230623.pdf\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">a report<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence found.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, a preponderance of evidence is emerging that points to the Wuhan lab, and Hu may turn out to be the key.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a game changer if it can be proven that Hu got sick with COVID-19 before anyone else,\u201d Jamie Metzl, a former member of the World Health Organization expert advisory committee on human genome editing<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shellenberger\/status\/1668661229727150081\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">told<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span><em>Public<\/em>. \u201cThat would be the \u2018smoking gun.\u2019 Hu was the lead hands-on researcher in Shi\u2019s lab.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-3\">Dizzy With Success<\/h2>\n<p>That the deadliest pandemic in a century might have been triggered by scientists pursuing risky genetic research in pursuit of a \u201cgreater good\u201d should not surprise us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the most monstrous deeds in human history have been perpetrated in the name of doing good\u2014in pursuit of some \u2018noble\u2019 goal,\u201d the philosopher Leonard Read once observed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nor should it surprise us if it\u2019s found that the Chinese government (with help from the US) was responsible. Governments have been responsible for the worst atrocities in history, usually while using collective force to advance utopia. This includes famous genocides like the Holocaust, the Holdomor, and Mao\u2019s Great Leap Forward, but also eugenics policies<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ihpi.umich.edu\/news\/forced-sterilization-policies-us-targeted-minorities-and-those-disabilities-and-lasted-21st#:~:text=Iowa%20and%20Michigan.-,Eugenics,and%20genetics%20to%20human%20breeding.\" class=\"keychainify-checked steem-keychain-checked\">that forcibly sterilized tens of thousands<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>of Americans to create a \u201cpurer race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A half-century ago, F.A.
