Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who\u2019s known for his libertarian leanings, cautioned Tuesday that the Republican Party could meet the same fate as animals that went extinct millions of years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think my party, the Republican Party, is shrinking. We\u2019re in danger of becoming a dinosaur,\u201d he said on CNN\u2019s \u201cNewsroom.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re not competitive on the West Coast, we\u2019re not competitive in New England.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul joins a chorus of Republican voices offering criticism of their own party in the wake of Mitt Romney\u2019s presidential loss earlier this month. The first-term senator, elected with strong tea party support in 2010, said change is in order.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need a new type of Republican (Party), I think, one that involves some of the ideas of libertarian leaning Republicans and people who agree in a less aggressive foreign policy,\u201d Paul told CNN\u2019s Brooke Baldwin.<\/p>\n

The senator, whose father Ron Paul ran for president for the third time this cycle, said last week he was considering a White House bid of his own in 2016. He attempted to clarify those remarks on Tuesday when asked about his presidential aspirations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019ve said is that I won\u2019t deny I\u2019m interested\u2013a little bit different than \u2018I am interested,\u2019\u201d Paul said, pointing to a need for reform in the party.<\/p>\n

Paul also weighed in on the fiscal cliff\u2013a series of tax hikes and spending cuts to kick in next year if Congress fails to reach a deficit-reduction deal. Focusing on the negotiations to find an agreement and avert the crisis, Paul said entitlement reform\u2013one of the options on the table in debt talks\u2013should happen on its own and not be part of a deal that also includes raising taxes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way I look at it is entitlements are broken, and it\u2019s not my fault, it\u2019s not Democrats\u2019 fault, it\u2019s because your grandparents had too many babies. It\u2019s because we\u2019re living longer. These are just facts,\u201d he said. \u201cTaxing anyone in a weak economy is not good.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Kentucky senator also said he\u2019d be one of the few conservatives willing to compromise on military cuts but remained firm against raising taxes.<\/p>\n
