The X-Files – 6×10 – “Tithonus”

This is a Monster of the Week episode and primarily features Scully. The agents are split up as Scully is sent to investigate the death of a woman who seemingly died in an elevator accident. Scully does not at first think this is an X-File (but this is The X-Files and we all know better) but suspicion quickly falls on a police photographer who was there early to get the shots. It turned out that he was always on the scenes he photographed early. After further investigation, Scully and the other agent she is working with notice that his I.D. photos have not changed over the years.

It turns out that this photographer can tell when someone is about to die. Initially you do not know what his motive is for wanting to take the pictures and he seems pretty creepy. However, he really just wants to capture death on film so that he can look him in the eye thereby ending his immortality and being able to die. He finally gets his opportunity at the climax of the episode when he notices that Scully is about to die. Agents burst in and Scully is in the way as gunshots are fired. She’s shot but the photographer sees death and is able to take her place.

This is an above average monster of the week episode and the actor who played the photographer (Geoffrey Lewis) did an excellent job with that character (incidentally, I just found out that he died recently). It loses a little for the low Mulder involvement (he mostly gave advice over the phone) but Scully did an excellent job carrying the episode without him. I would give this episode 4/5 stars.
