    Issue Number 35

    Cover
    .

In April 1992 the Super Nintendo had been out for several months, the NES was still going strong and the Game Boy was really the only portable that mattered. As you can tell by the cover, the WWF and Hulk Hogan were still the thing too.

The April 1992 issue of Nintendo Power features the following:

    NES

    • Captain America and The Avengers – Fight your way across the country in this side-scrolling action game as Captain America and Hawkeye to rescue Vision and Iron Man.
    • T&C 2: Thrilla’s Surfari – A side-scrolling action game featuring a gorilla on a skateboard. Thrilla’s Skatefari maybe?
    • Yoshi – A puzzle game featuring Mario’s side-kick.

    Game Boy

    • Star Trek – A mixture of side-scrolling shooter featuring the enterprise and an on the ground action game played from an overhead perspective.
    • Turn ‘N Burn/Top Gun – Two flight-sims in one for the Game Boy. The first is an F-14 sim while the second lets you choose various planes.
    • Ultra Golf – Golf on the go with multiple courses and game options.
    • Boggle Plus – The classic Boggle “board game” adapted for the Game Boy.
    • Missile Command – A pretty good conversion of the arcade classic.

    Super NES

    • The Addams Family – A 2D adventure game in which you must help Gomez find his lost family.
    • WWF Super Wrestlemania – A wrestling game from back before the WWF became the W-whatever. This game includes 10 characters and can be played with 1 or 2 players. Characters include Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, Sid Justice, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Hawk, Animal, Ted Dibiase, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Earthquake, and Typhoon (what, no Andre the Giant?)
    • Super Smash TV – I liked this game in the arcade and I really wanted it for the Super NES. However, it got tiring pretty quickly. It’s reminiscent of games like Robotron. However, it was designed (the arcade version at least) to make you keep feeding it quarters. There’s often so much stuff on the screen that you can’t even tell what just killed you.

    Tips From the Pros

    • Classified Information – Stage select in Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, advanced bonus areas in Gradius III, hidden areas in Super Castlevania IV, “Gamer Level” in U.N. Squadron, sound test in Over Horizon, unlimited continues in Sword Master and a mystery bonus in Elevator Action as well as many other secrets.
    • Counselor’s Corner – How to defeat Asura in Final Fantasy II, the location of the secret exit in Chocolate Island 3 in Super Mario, World, how to enter Medusa’s Cave in Final Fantasy Adventure, how to get through the ghost tunnel in Startropics and many other questions answered.

    The Info Zone

    • Celebrity Player Profile – Featuring Eddie Furlong, the kid from Terminator 2. He talks a bit about the games he likes, making T2, and upcoming movies he is in.
    • Next Issue – Some of the games featured in the next issue include Darkwing Duck (NES), Batman: Return of the Joker (Game Boy), Contra III (Super NES) and Super Adventure Island (Super NES).

    Video Updates

    • Now Playing – Some opinions on the latest releases including AD&D: Pool of Radiance (NES), Captain America and The Avengers (NES), Gemfire (NES), Hook (NES, Game Boy), Race America (NES), T&C II: Thrilla’s Surfari (NES), Toxic Crusaders (NES), Wacky Races (NES), Missile Command (Game Boy), The Addams Family (Super NES), and Smash TV (Super NES).
    • Pak Watch – Previews of upcoming games including Street Fighter II (Super NES) (I had this one and it was a great conversion), T.M.N.T. IV: Turtles in Time (Super NES) (I also had this one and it was excellent as well), Ultrabots: Sanction Earth (Super NES), Top Gear (Super NES), Pebble Beach Golf Links (Super NES), Wings 2 (Super NES), Might & Magic (NES), RoboCop 3 (NES), Batman: Return of the Joker (Game Boy), and 4-In-1 Fun Pak (Game Boy). They also take a look at Sim Earth recently released in Japan for the Super NES.

    Comics

    • The Legend of ZeldaChapter four of this particular Zelda story titled “The Sword Master”.
    • Super Mario Bros. – Mario and Luigi save the day again…
    • Nester’s Adventures – Nester’s adventures inside various video games. In this issue it happens to be The Addams Family.

    Player’s Forum

    • Player’s Pulse – Readers answer the question “What would you do to get a Super NES?”
    • Power Players – A list of players that finished various games. In olden times this would have been a high score list.
    • Player’s Poll Contest – A contest in which you could win the car used in Robocop II. As a car it isn’t that interesting (an old Ford Taurus) but as a prop that’s pretty neat. They estimate the value to be $8,000. I wonder where this car is now and how much it would sell for? A similar car from Robocop 3 sold for $20K in 2007…
    • Top 20 – At the top of the list this month are Super Mario Bros. 3, Battletoads and The Legend of Zelda.

    Special Report

    • Technology Update – CD-ROM – An overview of CD technology. At this time, it was expected that a Super NES CD-ROM add-on would be coming soon. Sadly, it never materialized and even Nintendo’s subsequent system (the Nintendo 64) would still only use cartridges.

    …and more!
