Scenery: The Opening cutscene for ‘Greendog: The Beached Surfer Dude’ on the Sega Genesis.

Greendog: The Beached Surfer Dude is a platform game published for the Sega Genesis in 1992. It’s a relatively obscure title but it’s a pretty solid platformer. This game was developed by STI (Sega Technical Institute) primarily known for their Sonic games.

You play the role of Greendog, a laid back surfer/skater who cares most about catching the biggest waves. After a surfing accident he wakes up in an alternate world (or perhaps just a dream) where he has had an Aztec curse put upon him. The curse causes wild animals and other creatures to attack and also prevents Greendog from surfing. You must hunt down the six pieces of an Aztec treasure scattered throughout the Caribbean islands in order to remove the curse.

This game is not as well known as many others but it got reasonably good reviews, particularly for its soundtrack, atmosphere and unique style. If you enjoy 2D platform games then this may be one you’ve never tried and is certainly worth a look. Unfortunately, other than a Game Gear port a year later, know re-releases or sequels have been made. You’ll have to track down an original cartridge or use emulation to play this one. Fortunately, this one can be picked up for a reasonable price on eBay.
