  • Mondu’s Fight Palace / Tongue of the Fatman (Sega Genesis)

Mondu’s Fight Palace, aka Tongue of the Fatman, aka Slaughter Sport was a game released by Activision and it started life as Tongue of the Fatman on DOS based PCs. For reasons unknown (by me at least) it was retitled Mondu’s Fight Palace for the subsequent Commodore 64 release. In the preview for the Sega Genesis version in the November 1990 issue of Mega Play, they were also calling it Mondu’s Fight Palace. However, by the time of its release, it was called Slaughter Sport (but I’ve also seen it referred to as Tongue of the Fatman).

The MS-DOS version was released in 1988 followed by the Commodore 64 version in 1989 and finally the Sega Genesis version in 1990. Regardless of the title or release, it is basically the same game which is a fighting game in the form of a sort of alien bloodsport. The game didn’t get very good reviews which begs the question of whether or not the name retitling was just a way to try to fool people.

The game is certainly strange and unique to say the least. There are a large variety of fighters compared to other fighting games of the time and the game is full of weird details and extra touches. It is also a very graphic game for the time. However, the gameplay just isn’t that great. It’s not the most responsive game in the world and the action is more frustrating than anything. You would think by the time they ported this game to the Genesis that they would have improved upon the problems but that just doesn’t seem to be the case. This is a game with a lot of promise and might be interesting as a remake but except for curiosity’s sake, there’s no reason to play this one.

If you do decide you want to give it a try, the Sega Genesis version is going to be the most accessible and probably the easiest to find. With the PC or Commodore 64 version you’ll need an old computer or emulation. None of the versions are great but the Genesis version probably gives you the best combination of sound, graphics and control. All of the images above relate to the Sega Genesis version.

Battletech was the first Battletech game released for the Sega Genesis and it was released in early 1994. The same game would be released in late 1995 for the Super Nintendo but retitled MechWarrior 3050. Except for the titles, the games are nearly identical.

The game is an action strategy game played from an isometric point of view. This is definitely not a game for the casual gamer as it is very difficult. Dedicated fans of strategic gameplay and the Battletech world will enjoy this one with some patience. The Genesis version of the game has better controls and animation while the Super Nintendo version has better graphics overall. This game can be played single player or in two-player cooperative mode.

There are no remakes or other versions of this game so emulation or an original Genesis or SNES cartridge are your only options if you want to give it a try. Given the additional frustration level of poorer controls in the SNES version in an already difficult game I would have to recommend the original Genesis version as the one to play.

Images above are all related to the Sega Genesis version of the game.

  • Ghostbusters (Sega Genesis)

The original Ghostbusters movie is one of THE classic action comedies of the 1980s. So if you haven’t seen it go do that now. The Ghostbusters game I remember best is the one based on the original movie and created by Activision in 1984 for the Commodore 64 and various home consoles of the time. While the Sega Genesis version still bears an Activision copyright, it is newer (1990) had completely different developers and is a completely different game. It also isn’t based directly on the original movie but is more of a sequel of sorts. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad game though.

The Sega Genesis iteration of Ghostbusters is a pretty standard side-scrolling platform/run and gun type game. In terms of gameplay it is not quite as original as, well, the original, but it is fairly well done and the graphics are certainly improved. I would say it’s slightly above average for the genre but I find the Ghostbusters theme appealing. Oddly, you can choose from only three of the four original Ghostbusters as playable characters (Winston is missing for some reason).

While the original Ghostbusters game has a variety of ports for the Atari 2600, Sega Master System and others, this particular iteration of Ghostbusters is unique to the Genesis. There are no remakes, ports or direct sequels so if you want to play this version you’ll need a Genesis and cart or you’ll have to resort to emulation.
