Punch-Out!! on the NES was a port of the arcade games Punch-Out!! and Super Punch Out!!. In the U.S., it was originally known as Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! in 1987. The deal with Mike Tyson to use his likeness was actually done before he won the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship in 1986. It was only a three year deal so that’s why it reverted back to being just Punch-Out!! in 1990 and later releases.

The game itself is more of an arcade style boxing game versus a boxing simulation. For performance reasons, on the NES the player’s boxer was changed from being a see through wireframe like in the arcade version to a boxer of short stature as a way to have good visibility of your opponent. You play the role of ‘Little Mac’ as you work your way through various opponents in your quest to be at the top of the World Video Boxing Association. The moves are relatively simplistic but the game is fairly well balanced and challenging. This is one of the original classics on the NES.

Punch-Out!! was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2007, the 3DS Virtual Console in 2012 and the Wii U Virtual Console in 2013.
