One Response to Missile Command Artwork

  1. Graphics on the Atari 2600 were pretty simplistic but they certainly attempted to make up for that with the imaginative artwork on the boxes, manuals and labels.

Above is the box/label art for Missile Command for the Atari 2600. I always thought of Missile Command in more of a contemporary setting but the box art gives it a distinctive sci-fi feel. This particular artwork was created by George Opperman who created a lot of the various artwork for Atari, including their logo. The Atari logo eventually became known as the ‘Fuji’ logo in reference to Mount Fuji but the design was meant to represent two players playing Pong (with the center line being the center of the court). It was given the general shape of an ‘A’ for Atari.
