Ever hear of a self-routing fast packet switch?  OK, it's not *exactly*
the same.  But it's an analog of an SXS.

It's an interesting set of paradigm shifts -- from "central control" (an
operator at a patchboard", to "distributed control" (an SXS), back to
central control (central control XBs and ESSs), and (potentially) back
to distributed control in fast packet switches...  (one could
potentially do a thesis on this.... I want the movie rights, tho :-))
