Thank all those who replied to my question about the behavior of my
modem.  All suggested that the problem is probably caused by the fact 
that com1/com3 and com2/com4 share the same interrupts.  Indeed I might
have co-incidentally switched the port for my mouse each time I switched 
the modem port. Anyway, things are pretty normal right now and hope that
it stays so.
