And the winner is David A. Keldsen from Oregon who correctly answered:

	Sounds like your application font is set wrong.  The
	application font setting is stored in your parameter RAM, so it
	will persist until you reset it in pRAM.  In an older Mac,
	unplug it and remove the battery from the battery compartment
	for 30 seconds or so.

And he was right!  I shut the thing down, popped out the battery and 
voila, a months-old mystery was solved!
