Sorry, I replied to the original poster by e-mail, but all this flailing
about makes me want to follow up too :-)

I had a similar problem that was caused by:

	cd oldinformixdir; find . -depth -print | cpio -pdl newinformixdir

After I made some changes and turned *both* databases to junk, I realized
what I'd done... DON'T USE THE l OPTION TO cpio!!!!
