There has been some interest in discussing the problems associated
with interconnecting Token Rings and Ethernets.  This problem arises
because of the differing bit transmission orders that exist for
these media.  Note that this also a problem for FDDI/Ethernet.

This has ramifications on both routable protocols and bridging.

I will be hosting a BOF to discuss this problem and possible
solutions at the upcoming Interop.  I'd like to get some idea
of how much interest there is in people attending.  If you are
planning on coming could you please email me your name, email
address, and a brief description of your interest.  Or just
send me you name/email address if you are too busy.

Here is a brief description of the BOF:


BOF Title:

	    Token Ring/Ethernet bit ordering Addressing Issues


Description:

Token Ring and FDDI transmit high order bit first while Ethernet/802.3
hardware transmit low order bit first.  This coupled with the common
addressing space causes significant problems when these diverse mediums
are interconnected.  This is especially true for bridging.  The purpose
of this BOF is to discuss this problem, present several potential
solutions, and to explore additional solutions.

Time and Place:  Interop '89, Thursday Oct 5, 6-8pm,  C-4
	* This time and place are tentative and subject to change.
	  Be sure to check the current schedule when it is published.
