I'd replace the speaker first.  In one of Norton's programming books, he
ddescribes the ways to make sound with the speaker.  Whatever chip it is, I'd
replace that second, assuming it's socketed.  BTW, have you checked to see
if the speaker connectors are firmly and cleanly connected??  If you have a
portable, it may have been jostled too much, and something is merely loose...
