If it doesn't, it's a bug in FSCK; one should be guaranteed that once a file system passes FSCK, it is in a valid state. I've been at this too long. I fixed the comparable bug in 1975 in CATFR (Catalogued File Recovery) in the Exec 8 operating system for UNIVAC mainframes. John Nagle
