Title:  Aspects of modelling area-averaged rainfall

Abstract:

Measuring rainfall over tropical regions is important for
global climate studies, yet difficult, as much of the tropics is
covered by ocean.  A project to measure tropical rainfall from
space is being studied at NASA, and is discussed in Simpson et al. (1988)
and Bell and Reid (1989).  One important feature of the satellite 
measurements is that they will record rainfall amounts averaged
over relatively large areas.  Of particular interest is how much the
rainfall characteristics will be damped by this averaging process.
This talk will consider estimating the diurnal cycle of rainfall rate
from area-averaged data, and the effect of area averaging on model
characteristics, using the Cox and Isham (1988) space-time model.
