I believe those are files used by Apple's "Desktop Manager" init. It is
an init which speeds up the filing and acessing of icon's by the finder. It
was originally written for use on the AppleShare file servers. But people
found out that it speeds things up quite a bit on larger volumes and
have started using it for local drives as well.

It not offically recommended for use on local drives by Apple. But I've
heard of many people who swear by it {or at it :-) } and are quite happy
running their system off of it.

  Hope all this helps.
