I asked this question over in rec.audio a while back and received the
following pointer:

    AES3-1985
    (ANSI S4.40-1985)

    AES Recommended Practice for Digital Audio Engineering--
    Serial Transmission Format for Linearly Represented
    Digital Audio Data

It was printed in J. Audio Eng. Soc., Vol 33, No. 12, 1985 December, p979ff.


Note that the format of the _VIDEO_ I/O of the PCM recorder is
quite different (digital info in an NTSC monochrome picture with
sync pulses and so on), and I don't have that spec.  If anyone
has it, please post a reference.
