Packaged with your newsreader is a newsposter, such as postnews.  It does the
"normal" postings, and is typically run from the shell-prompt level (i.e. not
under the newsreader itself).

Yes.  A typical user interface (e.g. in 'rn') is to "g ", which will
ask you if you want to resubscribe.  Of source, you can also edit the .newsrc
where is it pretty obvious what character determines the difference between
sunscribed and unsubscribed groups (viz. ':' vs '!').
