Ron -

	I just installed a Micropolis 1650 drive in my souped-up 386AT. I
experienced the same problem you did , I think. I'm using a WD1008 ESDI
controller with it. It turns out that the C: cable (original AT) has a
twist in it that confuses the controller. I think if you remove the C:
cable and use the D: cable, it will work properly. Now, this leaves almost
a foot of cable dangling unused -- not recommended. If it works you could
cut the C: connector, or, better yet, get a new cable sans twist.

The 1650 is a 16ms, 160Meg, ESDI drive that runs at WARP 9. Cost
about $1.5K locally, but it can be bought mail-order for $1.3K.

I hope this works for you.
