What you describe is called a "red box", and generates three different tones: 5 cents (ding), 10 cents (ding ding), and 25 cents (blonng). More modern payphones perhaps use out-of-band signaling, but long ago and far away, a recording of those noises would serve quite well in deceiving the operator.
