Oh well, MIS is getting a Sniffer, so I'll be playing with that until I can
justify my own toy.  Thanks for all the replies, though.

If anyone else was thinking of piecing together their own low-budget net tool,
they might want to look at what I was really hot on -- the Altima One, by
Altima Systems.  Basic stats: classic laptop form factor, '286, 20Mb of disk,
1M of memory, 1 parallel, 1 serial, a built in 2400 baud modem, and a real
half-PC slot.  They claim that it has the power and physical space to drive a
real Ethernet card, and that they have a bunch of these networked up with real
cards in their office.  The cost is currently $2700, so you could put together
a neat network tool for a pretty decent price.
