An empty signature (one consisting of four ASCII space characters, or four
nulls) is equivalent to "????" or to any other signature which is not that of
an application. A document lacking a recognized application's signature will
not be launched by Finder. The fact that the document's file type might be
referred to in some applications' FREF resources doesn't make any difference.
