I'd suggest buying an Atari 520ST (or 1040ST).  You can get a monochrome
520ST for less than $500 with 640 X 400 resolution.  There are several
good terminal emulation packages for ~$50.  So for about $500, you will
get a Tek terminal, vt100, and a 68000 micro with a mouse and 3.5" disk 
drive.
