SERC CASE Studentship (in collaboration with Hannah Research Laboratory)

MOLECULAR RECOGNITION, SPECIFICITY & STABILITY OF BETA-LACTOGLOBULIN

The milk protein beta-lactoglobulin (BLg) is concerned with transport of
vitamins (esp. retinol) from parent to young offspring.  It belongs to a
family of proteins with dual molecular recognition properties - for the
molecule to be transported and for a receptor cell.  One aim of the project
is to study complexes of BLg with retinol and related substances by X-ray
crystallography and by spectroscopic methods in solution.  A second aim is
to see whether the thermal stability of the protein is affected by complexing
with retinol or other bound molecules.

A wide range of techniques will be employed, including X-ray crystallography,
spectroscopic methods and molecular modelling by computer graphics and
appropriate training will be given.  Part of the work will be carried out at
the Hannah Laboratory, Ayr.

Candidates must have at least a 2(i) degree in Biophysics, Biochemistry,
Chemistry or Physics or a related subject.
