The solution (thanks to a speedy response from ohy@beach.cis.ufl.edu), is to download on the Mac side using Versaterm MacBinary Kermit. I had followed the instructions of the previously posted Using Simtel message, using Macintosh Kermit with Mode: Binary and Fork: Data, but that did not work, and neither did setting Versaterm to Kermit Binary. Setting Versaterm to MacBinary Kermit (and following the remaining instructions in the Using Simtel message) does work. thanks to those who sent suggestions, Margot
