I have happily come upon a solution which suits me fine. Many of you pointed out the central difficulty in allowing the lpd to handle the AppleWriter; the AW requires a relatively intelligent conversation between each file, a ^D when it is through, ^T to check if its busy, etc..... Using the lpd without careful filtering can lead to jamming, swallowed files, and other nasty queuing problems. Several of you provided unjamming mechanisms and useful filters. However, I received an offer from Rick Sample at U.B.C for a relatively professional and documented package which provides spooling, accounting, quotas, interactively handles diagnostics and much more. I have implemented the package on a SUN 3/50 running OSv3.5 from a serial port for an AppleWriter II NT. It works fine. I have had no complaints from busy users after about a week of use. I have provided complementary filtering for text, dvi, raster and troff files to provide all-round service. I have not implemented the quota system yet. The package is available from me unsupported (to take the pressure off of Rick) as I received it from UBC. It includes the text-to-PS filter. I cannot provide much more than the basic encouragement.
