You might check my paper in the May SIGPLAN Notices "A Language-Based Design
for Portable Data Files" for some of the relevant issues, especially with
respect to multiple-machine implementations of data sharing on a basis other
than remote procedure calls/message passing.  Sorry for the plug, but it
might explain why there aren't many UNIX implementations with such a facility.
