The mail path for a specific host is unrelated to its location in the
domain name space.  Hence, Keith, your suggestion does seem to fit my
understanding of domain name/mail system performance, although it DOES
match most people's intuition about the system.

Any leaf entry (host reference) may have any IP address for itself or its
MX (mail relay) attributes.
