The Mac display on my A-Max Mac-u-lator looks pretty horrid on my Max-15 hi-res monochrome multisynch monitor with long persistence phosphor (try typing t h a t ten times fast). It already shows how archaic the Mac Plus/SE 1-bitplane display is. The Amiga's 640 x 400 display gives a comfortably larger desktop then the Mac's pitiful 512 x 342. Note that the Amiga's interlaced rendition of the Mac's display flickers even on my LP-phosphor Max-15 while my true Amiga display seems rock solid to me (your flicker-mileage may vary). The Mac display on my 1080 would make even Genghis Kahn puke. :-) Apple would be doing themselves a big favor if they gave up the profit margin on the puny Plus/SE CRTs and used at least a Lisa sized (10 inch 600-or-so x 342?) screen. Instead, they offer the rest of us the puny 1-bitplaned SE/30 with no slots or the $,$$$$ Mac II/c/x/i. Normally I wouldn't toast the Mac like this -- hell, if anything I tend to defend it in comp.sys.amiga from various forms of misinformation -- but the A-Max makes the Mac's display deficiency so censored o b v i o u s. If nothing else, I think this should show that Amiga's flicker problems shouldn't be judged too briefly. It also show how unremarkable the Mac Plus/SE hardware is (currently) -- it's what is in them ROMs that counts. Flip side, joe piazza --- Disclaimer: I disclaim. --- "Where's my other sock?" A.
