    Does someone knows of any performance studies about the
    internals of X-windows? (e.g. what usage of memory does X-window make)

I know of at least one vendor (NCD) that has published memory usage numbers for
various clients against their server.  I haven't seen much beyond that.  But, then
again, R4 is going to obsolete any such studies anyway. :-)
