There actually exist quite a few such systems. I'm most familiar with a system used in-house at Intermetrics in Cambridge, MA, called the TGG (Test Generator Generator). This tool has been used to test not only the compiler as a whole, but also internal compiler phases. Pardon the mild self-advertisement, but see "Software Practice & Experience", Jan. 1989, for an article by Bill Homer and myself that discusses our experience, and gives references to related work. -- Richard schooler@bbn.com -- Send compilers articles to compilers@ima.isc.com or, perhaps, Levine@YALE.EDU { decvax | harvard | yale | bbn }!ima.
