Do you use something to automatically spawn off a number of 
applications when you start X?  Something like an X11start shell script
or the xtools program?  If so, add the xsetroot command in there.

On mine, I can move the mouse into the xterm window, hold down the Middle
mouse button and the Control key at the same time.  A menu should appear.
One of the lower choices on the menu is something akin to "Select Tek Mode."
Try it, although it may be Tek 4010 emulation (I'm not a Tek expert).
