I've never had a problem with lightning coming in through the power lines.
I've had several modems die from lightning on the phone lines.  I really
recommend that everyone use a good surge protector on the phone line.  Look
for one of the ones made for fax machines.  Also realize that they don't
protect the second line if you have one in a 4 wire cable.
