Pete, short of writing massive code you DON'T do that in Applesoft.  Sorry.
I seem to remember some mention of doing just what you wanted to do (and some
neat tricks to pull it off) in an issue of _Open-Apple_ (now _A2-Central_), but
I don't see mention of it in the indexes.  There may be an ampersand routine
floating around in a package like Amperworks (Microsparc, 52 Domino Drive,
Concord, MA 01742) that does what you want.
