Did your IIGS break down when the newer version was announced??

You omitted a lot of overhead (corporate R&D, administration, etc.).
It's impossible to unambiguously assign a "fair" price to one item
out of context, but if a company consistently overcharges, in a free
economy competitors spring up.  So if you really think Apple is
ripping you off, then buy a Laser or some other competitive computer.
