It is not necessarily a modem problem.  I've got an (genuine) IBM AT (model 339)
running 2.2.1, and login drops the second character on a DIRECT CONNECTION.

Once it's out of getty (Login incorect\nlogin: ), then it doesn't drop
it any more

I also haven't got the foggiest idea why.
