i have had similar problems from time to time on my 1040, and each time it was
due to a screwed up desktop.inf file. the problems occurred when i was
developping megaboot.prg, which would check the resolution you were booting in
and load an appropriate desktop.inf file depending on the resolution. if the
desktop.inf file was corrupted in any way, the st would hang, then billions and
billions of bombs would appear, etc. so, check your .inf file to see if its
buggered in any way. (maybe remove the desktop.inf file and see if you can
boot up easily)
