SEveral of my colleagues run large numerical programs in both Pascal and
Fortran, and they want to be able to work to higher precision than the pc
and f77 compilers normally provide (which I believe is Real*8 = 64
bits). Please does anybody have any suggestions how this might be
possible? Do there exist public-domain compilers?

Our machines are sun 3/60, 68881 coprocessors, sun-OS3.5, I assume the
compilers are the standard Unix ones.
