Gateways don't know how much you know about the originating network, so
they mangle the From: header.  If domains such as .BITNET and
.DECNET were recognized by Internet software, most of this mangling would
no longer be needed.

What we really need are Originally-From: and Originally-To: headers
that nobody, not even gateways, will ever, ever change.
