I had been thinking about this... and have a suggestion. There is a standard windowing interface, STDWIN, which is available from gatekeeper.dec.com via anonymous ftp. It currently has drivers for X11, the Mac, and Atari ST, and could no doubt easily have drivers done for MS Windows and PC GEM. It has a client/server module for TCP/IP, and with the addition of a serial packet driver, you could have a serial client/server setup.
