This technique was proposed by t. whitted in his june '80 cacm paper
"an improved illumination model for shaded display".

This is *still* an interesting paper (perhaps *the* interesting paper)
if you want to review the basics. Whitted doesn't talk much about speeding it
up, but the basic description of how ray tracing works is extremely clear.
