This is despite the fact that usage on the system is up dramatically over last year. We grew from 660 to 867 labs using the system. Active groups (more than 60 connect hours or over 120 cpu minutes per year) increased over 40% to 407 labs. It is evident that people are actively using the system as is evident from our user statistics and to anyone that has logged in. However, it appears that too many people do not recognize computer analysis as a legitimate subject for inclusion in their "Materials and Methods" sections when publishing their papers. Even out of the reprints that we receive, many people still do not acknowledge BIONET explicitly other than in their cover letter to us that they include with the reprints. The proper way of acknowledging the resource is listed under HELP CITATIONS on BIONET. It is even more surprising when one considers that the steps taken during computer analysis are often crucial to the interpretation of results. This should be carefully documented in a publication. I must appeal to everyone once again. I am trying hard right now to finish our annual report by the end of NEXT WEEK. We have received many compliments by e-mail about the helpfulness of our staff and the quality of the service. These are greatly appreciated but are of limited utility. We need your reprints and written, HARDCOPY testimonials to document this support officially. I can not emphasize strongly enough how important this is to maintain the quality of the service. As I have stated in the past we are working diligently right now to expand our services and make them available for another five years. Our staff has spent countless hours, often at nights and on weekends too, helping out researchers on BIONET. Those who can not take the time to help us out now will have no right to complain if they lose access to computing services as a result of budget cuts or other actions by the funding agencies in the future. This is simply a recognition of the realities of justifying funding. I would appreciate EXPRESS mailings during the next week of reprints/testimonials from all of those who have not yet done so. Please refer to HELP REPRINTS and HELP RENEWAL on-line for mailing information. Sincerely, David Kristofferson, Ph.D. BIONET Resource Manager kristofferson@bionet-20.bio.net -------
