My primary concerns are good voice quality and hardware reliability, but a few extra features wouldn't hurt. If you don't have any specific brand recommendations, maybe you can tell me what features/capabilities to look for and why they are important. I have seen an AT&T phone (model 4000 or 4100 I think) advertised locally for about $80, but have no idea how good or bad it might be.
