I just finished an interesting article by Andrew Hume in the November,
1988 issue of Software: Practice and Experience.  In it he briefly
describes the ``fio'' library routines, that provide a fast and
portable input/output facility for C programs.  Are these routines
available anyplace?  Also, are they described more completely in other
moderately accessible literature?
