My configuration is:
 	Atari-520ST/M with 512k + 3.5" disk (360K) + 20MB ST204 hard disk

I have no trouble building the kernel with this config, but the hard
disk helps A LOT. For rebuilding the boot program I do:
	chmem =80000 /usr/lib/cem
and then a:
	make -n 'CC=cc -vn -T/usr/tmp' >job1
and edit job1 so that commands that are not C compiles (cc) are echoed
to stdandard out. Then I do a:
	. job1 >job 2>&1
which generates a shell script that can compile what is needed:
	. job
Once this is done I rarely recreate the "job" script since I usually
end up recompiling the same files. Also, its often easier just to edit
the script itself. Never the less, with a little work I sure a shell
script could be written to automatically do the make and edit steps.
Finally, getting the memory upgrade is desireable if you like to do
a shell escape from the editor to grep for something. This can be hard
to do with a half meg system (one way is to exec the editor and
use a login without a password - a kind of manual swap ;-)).
