In rn you can use the "v" command to see all of the headers (try it now!), including the Xref: line, if any. I run news 2.11 with DOXREFS and the only problems I see are with multiple postings, where diff shows different message IDs (often consecutive) in the two instantiations of the article. Also noteworthy is the fact that the (c)atchup command in rn does *not* track down cross-posted articles and mark them as read in other newsgroups.
