As far as I remember, "The computer for the rest of us" had nothing to do with price. This ad strategy refered to the idea that finally here was a computer that didn't require a 4-year degree just to turn on. Apple was selling the friendly, mouse driven user interface as a means to make computers accessable to "the rest of us." All this Apple bashing about prices and dreams is just noise.
