Actually, if you're wanting to do weird off-the-wall applications, IBM compatibility is almost the only way to do them right now. For example, image processing -- you can either do PC/AT bus, VME bus, or Apple Nubus, take your pick, you aren't getting the hardware on the Amiga bus (mostly because of lack of market -- the medical folks know only enough about computers to buy name brands, while the industrial folks are pretty well intrenched in VAX/VME...).
