A moment's thought should convince you that they *HAD* to do it with no warning to get the desired effect. If they wanted to lower demand (and increase profit margin), it wouldn't make much sense to tell everyone that prices are going up in a month or three; that would cause a short-term INCREASE in demand (and more systems would be sold at the lower price). Timing of announcements is a tricky art, and companies have been destroyed by mismanaging it (e.g. Osborne). As far as I can see, Apple handled this one as well as possible.
