Yes, but small model on a 386 means 4Gb segments! Substantial changes will be needed to make a 386-based minix that can support gcc. There are several 286 protected-mode minix's floating around. Rather than 'no hope', I would say there's considerable hope that we can make gcc run under minix. Assuming that a 386 minix with segments >64K exists, the next big challenge will be the fact that the current 386 gcc implementation is based on System V.
