I, for one, vote for broadcast/multicast ping.
Broadcast ping is a totally different concept from
ping with a unicast address in the sense that you
don't have to know what objects are there.
It is very tempting to use it for configuration detection.
You can find out not only active objects but also what
shouldn't exist.
