I ran into the same problem. If you are strictly using nntp you
can byte-compile nntp.el and gnus.el and things should work ok.
I believe the nnspool.el stuff is for reading news from a local 
spool directory and is not needed for nntp. I'm an elisp novice
so I'm not sure why this works (or gnus doesn't work with nnspool
byte-compiled).
