Richard,
I'm a unix novice and a new user of a Silicon Graphics 4D70GT. My colleagues
have recommended that I add gnu-emacs to my system. So, I followed instructions
and FTPed the 18.52 distribution from your system. Installation however was not
sucessfull.
I think that my problems are caused by the "new" system V operating system
on my workstation. Apparently Silicon Graphics is shipping this version,
called System V, 3.0, to workstation owners whose systems have the GT graphics
board set. I believe that owners of the simpler 4DxxG machines are using
something like System V, 2.6.
Anyway, I'm writing to inform you of the problem and to mention that Silicon
Graphics will probably be upgrading their operating system again fairly soon
since they are about to ship the 4D/GTX (a multi-cpu, GT graphics workstation).
Once the operating system dust settles (mid-to-late October) I hope to again
try to install gnu-emacs. Of course I'm presuming that there will then be an
appropriate set of Iris files for inclusion in config.h. To that end, I will
be glad to help in any way that I can.
Now, as to the specifics of the installation failure, I used build-install and
after the line
		cc -o loadst -O0 loadst.c
(note that I had turned off the optimizer as its known to be buggy)
the following error message appeared...
	/usr/bin/ld:
	Undefined:
	nlist
	cc: Exit status 1
	*** Error code 1

	Stop.
Also, one of my friends alerted me to a message on "the net" which indicated
that the file /usr/lib/crt0.o had to exist for successfull installation. That
file does not exist under my version of the operating system. (Apparently an
Eric Raible has placed a uuencoded copy of crt0.o
on the net which I can get.)
Lastly, when I FTPed the distribution to my system, I had no immediate method
for uncompressing the .Z file. (Eventually I FTPed the file to a friends local
machine, uncompressed it and FTPed the result back to my system. He only has
the compress/uncompress executable on his VAX so it won't do me any good on my
system.) So, is there a place where I might get the compress/uncompress source?
Thanks for your past work and for the foundation.
						Sincerely
