Another thing you could do is 1) in your EXINIT var set nomodeline (I'm not sure of the syntax for the variable) or 2) in $HOME/.exrc have the line: se nomodeline As someone else pointed out, the .exrc file gets loaded before your file, so the option gets turned off.
