Apparently this whole daft business was caused because of the cost of
contesting SEA's legal suite. As far as I can make out, there was no decision
of the Judiciary, but a legal agreement between the two parties. This is
probably not valid in England, (or indeed anywhere else but the US). I
doubt if SEA would be able to establish *copyright* on the word "arc" here.
Although it may claim it as a trademark, this simply requires an apropriate
acknowledgement. One sees many adverts for software "compatable with ..."(123,
dBase etc).
  I'm no expert, but the shareware community could probably put a stop to all
this nonsense by downloading from and registering the software in Canada or
Europe.
