Actually, its more like a time bomb, or a worm.  It wasn't a replicating
program from the reports I got; just a program that needed to
be reset every once in awhile or else it started up, and did bad
things to the file system.

Since the bug was introduced by one of their programmers,  being
protected wouldn't have helped much.
