The UNIX ARC I've seen can squash. So, actually, squashing is now a standard compression method. The message "You need a later version" is accurate for all the MS-DOS unarcers I know of. You can get ARC 5.22 off of SIMTEL, if for some strange reason you wanted it (or the documentation).
