I bought the external 2400 bps Zoom last week for $139 and have
had no problems so far.  I've used it for about 5 hours and have
had no transmission or reception errors.  I haven't used it on any
known bad lines, though.  I was averaging about 230 cps -- I'd
attribute the less than perfect efficiency to software.

The modem claims 100% Hayes compatibility :-).  The S registers are
documented, but I haven't used a genuine Hayes 2400 for comparison.
The documentation doesn't describe the RS-232C pinouts, but otherwise
it is complete and well written.
