I have a Sony D-10, and the little battery indicator is ON
(i.e. visible on front panel) when the unit is properly
supplied with power (either battery or AC).  My manual tells me
not to charge the battery for more than 8 hours at a time
(I think it is lead-acid, sealed).  I think that's the way the
D4's are, because a friend of mine had one.  Hope this helps...
