i've once seen a table with things like "a  sent with 2400 looks like
'~x' when received as 1200' etc....

that was used to determine the baud rate of the caller. to avoid trouble
with line noise, one also was able to switch rates in a circular manner
through sending breaks.

fortunately modems like hst and tb allow to fix the rate between comp 
& modem :-)
