Unfortunately the words after 'base' probably flew off the end of your screen.
Here is what the sentence should say:

In return for IBM's participation in OSF, the group decided to base 
their new UNIX on a future version of IBM's AIX (IBM's UNIX OS).

* Sigh *  Oh well, nobody's perfect.
