Actually, he consistently lost money running the farm; he survived principally by selling off land periodically. He also had a nail factory on the place, with labor provided by some of his ~100 slaves, and I think that operation turned a profit for awhile, until nail cutting machines took off around the turn of the 19th century. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot I like about Jefferson, but business and farming sense were not his forte, though he was indeed enthralled with gardening.
