Is it possible that you have issued a *subst*
command to map the directory into a logical drive like
subst h: \lisp ?

If a directory is mapped in such a fashion it is marked *in use* 
and can't be gotten rid of unless you un-substitute the drive with
subst h: /D.

A long shot, but....
