When using strange terminals (strange = not in termcap) to edit files, I
am inclined to force vi to use open mode by typing:

$ TERM=crap export TERM
$ vi

On one of the older systems around here (system 3 I think, but I can't
get it to boot to check), vi complains saying:

$ vi
Terminal type unknown, all I have is crap
using open mode
