If you looked *carefully*, you would have seen the :-) smiley face on the
original posting.  Anyway, I thought that some people might not be aware that
this was a possibility....sorry if you were offended....

it cost $2100 new, has 2 MB RAM/67 MB disk and runs the netnews software fine.
You can pick up models of the 7300 with smaller memory/disks for under $1000.
Yes, I know that doesn't answer your question, but again, maybe it's of 
interest to somebody.

Also note that there are MANY public-access UNIX systems across the country.
Try reading or posting to comp.mail.uucp, comp.mail.misc, news.admin, etc. to
find one in your area.

BTW I have a Mac, and posted requests for info on UUPC or anything similar
myself numerous times but have never received a reply either...I have to
assume it's vaporware...
