Hello fellow News people -

I am a new News site on an AT&T 3B1.
I have had several problems with the software which I have tried to work
around, but this one has me stumped.

'rn' works fine for me on the console, but dial-in users thru the On-Board
Modem get a "can't open /dev/tty" message for reasons I can't understand.
This appears to be issued in 'term.c' in the code that is part of the
'#ifdef PENDING"
'#ifndef FIONREAD"
stuff. I note that even though the O/S is basically System V, it has
O_NDELAY defined in .

It turns out that 'readnews' and 'vnews' are broken as well - the 'n'
command dumps users out to the shell, instead of the next article,
so they can't be substituted for 'rn' either.

'rn' is running at patchlevel 40, and News is 2.11.14, with dbm
(the history stuff won't work here without dbm).
The O/S is Convergent 3.51 with utilities etc., which is System V (largely)
release 2 (sortof).

Is there a bad system binary somewhere, or what? Has anyone else observed
these (or similar) problems?

Any help will be *much* appreciated...

Yours in puzzlement,
