I read "Programmers at Work" a while ago (it is a book of a bunch of interviews with famous programmers), and one of the things that Bill Gates (CEO of MicroSoft) kept talking about (and considered as the sign of a good programmer) was doing wierd things to squeeze every bit of performance out of the hardware. -Ted
