Actually, I have fouind that often , when connecting with modems which
handle MNP, I can not get a good connection, but if I go for a modem
that does not have MNP in the same exchange, I get a MUCH better line.
This has caused me to beleive that in general, modems with built in
error correction are not as reliable in unprotected data transfers.  I
have a ventel 2400 halfcard, which has no error checking, and most of
the time, when I notice that a modem has error correction, it is a USR
HST, but not always.  This could be a brand defect, but I doubt it.
