Steve,
  There are a couple of different types of ST251 drives, there's the MFM
version and the RLL version. Both of which will work on the XT.

  The "advertising" people call it an AT drive because the "MLC1" drives
(should say MLCx on the serial number) are considered "fast access" and
therefor up to AT standards.

  Your friend should have no problem using his/her ST251 drive.
