Lines: 36 Recently people have asked for help in getting binaries from comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d, and someone suggested the regular posting of a guide for newcomers to UseNet for that purpose. As I volunteered to create such a guide, and had one vote of support via e-mail, and none against, I will go ahead with it anyways. I will try to make it as general as possible, while still being able to make new user's understand what to do. Here is the basic set up I have in mind at the moment: 1) Why uuencoding is used 2) Encoding on a Unix host 3) Encoding on a PC 4) Decoding on a Unix host 5) Decoding on a PC 6) Up/Downloading using XModem 7) Up/Downloading using Kermit 8) Up/Downloading using ZModem This will probably be split up into 2 different manuals, with a revision of my posting about using FTP as a third manual. I would like to have a few people "proofread" the manuals before releasing them, by verifying the information being correct, etc. If a few new people to the net would care to contact me, I'd appreciate it. Also, I would like at least one person with FTP access to the ArpaNet as well, to test out the FTP manual. Of course, due to the large amount of different programs available, I will try to use the most basic ones as possible, with more specific references added in (for such things as Richard Marks UUENCODE/UUDECODE program for PC's). Any comments to this are welcome. ============================================================================ Brian O'Neill, MS-DOS Software Exchange Coordinator ArpaNet: boneill@hawk.ulowell.edu UUCP : {(backbones),harvard,mit-eddie,et. al.}!ulowell!hawk!boneill
