I use EDT instead of TPU but maybe you could duplicate what I've done.  In my
EDTINI file I have the following sequence:

        insert buffer toapplication     ;=
        insert buffer tonumeric         ;>
        def key gold "A" as "ext write tt: =toapplication."
        def key gold "N" as "ext write tt: =tonumeric."

bypassing the editor altogether and instead letting the terminal switch between
keypad modes.  EDT (or TPU) never knows the difference.
