Try ISO 8859/2 for East European languages and ISO 8859/5 for Cyrillic (note ISO 8859/1 is "ISO Latin", for Western European languages). All of the ISO 8859 standard character sets have US ASCII as the lower half. BTW, I have an 8 x 8 screen font for Russian Cyrillic characters, if anyone's interested.
