How appropriate!  Scott lost the race to the Norwegian Amundsen due 
to his own massive incompetence, even though Amundsen had many fewer
men, a much smaller budget, and lukewarm government support (they didn't
even know he was going to the South Pole until he nearly to Antarctica).

I suggest you read "The Last Place on Earth", or see the recent
PBS Masterpiece Theater miniseries of the same name.  I especially
like the bit about the design of the Terra Nova: the stables for the
ponies were directly above the dining room.  Uggh.
