Well, I decided at one point to buy a JVC rack system for an inexpensive ($1k)
2nd stereo to beat on (I use my stereo often as much as 7 hours per day to
practice bass/drums against), which included a CD player.  The sound quality
is pretty good, although not incredible, but hey, what do you expect?  The cost
was around what you're talking about, and I haven't had a moment's trouble
with it.  Of course I don't abuse it physically, I just use it alot...
