I am trying to get a handle on modern ethernet performance (ok, so so are
a couple of hundred other people...).

FTP binary mode was always one useful measure, and so I am after some numbers.
I would appreciate any results of the following command (or equivalent on your
system):

ftp> binary
200 type set to I
ftp> get /vmunix /dev/null  #(you V guys and gals can use /unix)
?????? bytes received in ?.? seconds (????? Kbytes/s)

I am most interested in commercial UNIX boxes running classical user-mode
FTP servers.  I need to know the hw/sw configuration of both ends of
the transaction.  What I am really after is the fastest implementation out
there.  I will post the results if I get enough to notice.

Just to get the ball rolling:

70 Kbytes/Sec.       About what an 11/780 running 4.2 would do
100 Kbytes/Sec.      Pretty good 680?0 UNIX box
??? Kbytes/Sec.      Pretty good modern UNIX box
1000 Kbytes/Sec.     Max practical Ethernet throughput
1250 Kbytes/Sec.     Max theoretical Ethernet throughput
