I recall reading that VAX warns users that the dollar sign is a reserved character, for MicroVMS systems (4.5 or so) Last year I set up logical names for disks (such as USER_ROOT to reference DUA1:[USERS$ROOT.]), which worked great. However, wild-card directory searches could not "see" sub-directories within [USER$ROOT...] This included our nightly backup procedures.
