Nihal,

     If you had the newest version of Gemacs, then you wouldn't
have the problem of of getting the error message
xD
       Check your DISPLAY environment variable 

     Because Stallman has written the newest version to work
under X11 R2.  

     However, never fear, you can run your old version of gemacs
just fine inside an xterm.   The key point is !!!

     When you fire up gemacs inside an xterm do the following.

           gemacs -nw

     The nw flag tells gemacs "no window".

     Have a good one.
