This happened a lot with *some* European A500s (PAL machines) and *early*
versions of SideWinder - I believe that most of the affected copies were
in fact Pirate copies - I wondered at the time if the author had released
some 'not quite perfect' copies into the 'pirate domain' in the hope for
publicity, and users wanting to buy a *good* copy. (But if as you say, 
the commercial copy is naff, well that's my theory up the shoot...)
