Yup. I stand corrected. It's been so long since I used the wretched
firmware screen routines that I have forgotten all their deficiencies.
So, my second proposed solution will not work, and the only way to not
lose characters is to write your own screen code. Which is a fun and
useful exercise in itself, but not for everyone I suppose.
