I know of no commands to do this. ... We had the same problem here (with even the same cause! :-{ ). What we ended up doing is running the L_stat file thorough "vis" (alas, a Hewlett-Packard special), which puts out all the unprintable characters in \0nnn notation. Then you can edit this representation to delete the undesired entry, and re-create the original file with the reverse filter "inv". (Note that BSD has "cat -v" for the first transliteration, but I don't know what for the second; in a pinch you _could_ use uuencode/uudecode ::::----((((.) :_s_e_t_ _p_e_r_s_o_n_a_l___o_p_i_n_i_o_n___m_o_d_e_ _o_n BTW, I think it is less than useful to post a response to a rational request which offers _no_ assistance, but merely questions the desire to do such a thing. Sometimes, it's for learning value; other times, the desire to see less "noise" coming out of a utility program. The only response necessary to "Why?" is "Because!" - answers _should_ be helpful. :_s_e_t_ _p_e_r_s_o_n_a_l___o_p_i_n_i_o_n___m_o_d_e_ _o_f_f I hope this helps solve your problem. > Boyd Ostroff * Technical Director * Department of Theatre * SUNY Oswego -- John D.
