    We had the same  problem  here (with even the same  cause! :-{ ).  What we
ended  up  doing  is  running  the  L_stat  file   thorough   "vis"  (alas,  a
Hewlett-Packard  special),  which puts out all the  unprintable  characters in
\0nnn notation.  Then you can edit this representation to delete the undesired
entry, and re-create the original file with the reverse  filter  "inv".  (Note
that BSD has "cat -v" for the first transliteration, but I don't know what for
the second; in a pinch you _could_ use uuencode/uudecode ::::----((((.)

    BTW, I think it is less  than  useful  to post a  response  to a  rational
request which offers _no_  assistance,  but merely  questions the desire to do
such a thing.  Sometimes,  it's for learning value; other times, the desire to
see less "noise" coming out of a utility program.  The only response necessary
to "Why?"  is "Because!"  - answers _should_ be helpful.
