  I was very pleased to read the posting about this subject in hope
it will clear things up a bit.

  Still, I do believe, in contrast with the posting, that the parity bit
is not mutually exclusive with 8 bit data transmition.  Thus, an
asynchronous "frame" (i.e. a transmition of a single character) can be
composed of 1 start bit, 8 data bits, 1 parity bit and 1 or more stop
bits (more than 1 stop bit was used in teleprinters for stopping the
mechanical mechanism).

  I would appreciate being corrected if I am wrong.
