There are two issues to this encryption business.  The one being focused
on is sending encrypted mail between machines.

The other issue is that some systems are not *shipped* with crypt.  SCO
XENIX for example.  However, it was real easy to get.  One phone call to
SCO support and I had it within a week.

I'm inclined to remove the assumption from elm that the system has crypt
available.  This could be done by including a crypt() with the sources.
Maybe, however, it would be better handled with some #ifdef's.
