The way I do it is by using the unix utility 'expand' from within
'VI'. I know this does not prevent insertion of tabs, but it at least
removes them once you have used the command
!expand
The may be (, {, 1G etc. In writing LISP functions,
for example, I find the command '!%expand' very useful.
