The notion of a protocol which is "as fast" as non-protocol transfer is
certainly interesting from a theoretical point of view.  However, from a
practical point of view, typical overhead in a protocol like HDLC is
less than 10% (at least for file transfers where frames are near
maximum size).  Moreover, there are many silicon implementations 
of the HDLC standard.  I doubt that there will be a great deal of
commercial interest in a protocol which promises to offer--at most-- a
10% improvement in performance, lacks acceptance as a standard, and
would require a substantial front end investment in chip to design
in order to be provided at as low a cost (or as low a burden on the main CPU)
as HDLC.
