The drivers don't.  You seek beyond the end of a device, then you
get an illegal address error.

However, SCO's tar has a 'k' flag to specify a volume size.  When you reach
the end, tar prompts you for a new floppy/tape/hard disk ?:-).  An 'e' flag
prevents files from being split across volumes.  The /etc/default/tar file
can be configured to automagically take care of all this.
