With our ATARI 1040ST HDB V2.3 does *not* deselect the floppy drive
at boot time (The red light will be on until you insert a floppy)
but it does something to the printer port so that

- an EPSON FX-80 will forget the first character of the first file
you try to print after booting

- a NEC P6 won't print at all.

Another ATARI around here (520ST+ I think) does everything as documented
for HDB V2.3 (e.g. deselects the floppy drive) and the printer port is ok
after booting.

Any suggestions ?
