Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about a problem running
MPW on an SE using System 4.0 and Finder 5.4 (this is
"company-supplied" hardware and software, so I did not choose what
System/Finder to run). The problem was that after using MPW, then
turning off the machine, the next time I turned on the machine it
would refuse to boot from the internal hard disk; the data were
unreadable. Here is how things worked out. (There were so many
respondents that I think a posting is more efficient than individual
replies.)

First I had the hard disk run through diagnostics, just to confirm
that there was not a problem with it. There wasn't. Since I had used
Setup 1.4, I ruled that out as being the problem. This is something a
number of respondents said to make sure of.

Most respondents urged I try using System 4.1/Finder 5.5 with the SE. I
tried this, and it seems to have solved the problem: I can use MPW at
will, turn off the machine, and when I turn it on again it boots from
the hard disk. Of course, MacTerminal now crashes the machine, but I
can live with that till a newer version comes out.

Thanks again!
