The author's of ARC have released the sources. Consequently ARC can be ported onto other systems (such as UNIX) without writing an equivalent program from scratch. Thus ARC'd files are portable between many different machines while PKARC files are restricted to the PC. That along should justify PKARC using a different file extension than '.arc'.
