On my own machine, any ARC type file that I produce that ends up with a
squashed entry, I rename to a .PKA extension (Phil Katz Arc). I would
tend to stay away from .ARK extensions because Bob Freed is working on
a CP/M version of Arc that he will call NOAH that produces *.ARK files.
Bob chose the .ARK extension to point out the fact that the archive was
created on a CP/M system instead of MSDOS. The resulting .ARK file is
supposed to otherwise be compatible with the MSDOS verions of ARC.

NOAH is sourced in Z80 assembly. Bob is currently trying to verify that
there aren't any bugs left in his code before releasing it to the public.
Bob has released several versions of UNARC for CP/M, the latest of which
is called UNARC16.ARK (self extracting if renamed to UNARC16.COM). UNARC16
will unpack the archives created by Phil Katz that have SQUASHED members,
I have verified this.

As for why you haven't seen PKARC on a Unix type box; I have been told that
PKARC was written in Microsoft MASM (assembly) for the PC. Assembly code
is not very portable. 8-<)
