There may be some confusion because of terminology...to upgrade to
8 Megs you replace the existing set of 4 SIMM modules (which are populated
with 256K DRAM chips) with a new set of 4 SIMM modules populated with
1Mbit DRAM chips. This takes you to 4 Mbytes of memory. You then add
another 4 1Mbit SIMM modules to the remaining SIMM slots on the motherboard
and you have a total of 8M of memory. I don't believe it is easy to
replace the 256K chips ON the simm modules with 1 Mbit chips...that may
be what your dealer/rep were warning about. In any case Apple's official
solution is definately to buy new SIMMs to plug into the SIMM slots on the
motherboard. If you do upgrade to 8M you are left with the original 1M
of memory which you might find a buyer for since it can be used to upgrade
a stock MacII up to 2M.
