I don't know if this will be of much help, but i frequently have to 
convert files in both directions, but usually from troff to tex.  I
set up macros with similar names to do similar things in each text
formatter (e.g., .AU is equivalent to \AU) then do a conversion with
a shell script or with VI.  For the equations it is sometimes tricky,
but moving them to a temporary file to do the conversion provides a
quick and safe way using the methods I mentioned.  Tables are a little
more complicated, but often you can set them up so that a direct replace-
ment of the tbl tab character with & is feasible.
