This is the monthly Info article for comp.binaries.ibm.pc, the moderated
IBM-PC-and-clones-thereof binaries newsgroup. In this article, I will
attempt to state the groundrules for the newsgroup and how to get the most
out of it.

What is acceptable for this newsgroup?
--------------------------------------

Any executable for IBM PCs and clones thereof are acceptable fare for this
newsgroup, whether for MS-DOS, OS/2 (if and when), CP/M-86, Concurrent CP/M,
etc. UN*X binaries aren't generally acceptable, given that more people get
use out of them as sources, but if there's a good reason for posting a
binary, I'll take it. Otherwise, MINIX sources go to comp.os.minix and
others should probably go to comp.sources.misc.

Submissions should be packed with ARC 5.10 or later or PKARC, and uuencoded.
When I post them, they will be posted in PKARC 3.5 format and uuencoded;
a uuencoded self-unpacking archive of PKARC and PKXARC version 3.5 follows this
article. Versions of uuencode and uudecode are available from all over the
net, including versions in BASIC and Turbo Pascal for the PC. (Alas, the TP
sources disappeared from ncoast, so I can't repost them.)

Archiving
---------

I can not do archiving on ncoast due to space limitations; however, I do
place archive headers on submissions which are suitable for manual or
automatic archive and archive retrieval schemes. The archive header is as
follows:

	X-Archive: comp.binaries.ibm.pc/yymm/seq

where "yymm" is the year and month of the submission and seq is a sequence
number assigned automatically, which starts at 1 for the first submission of
the month.

Any sites which are archiving comp.binaries.ibm.pc should contact me so I'll
know to whom to redirect archive requests. I will also add archiving infor-
mation to the monthly Info posting.

Submitting binaries
-------------------

With luck, the aliases have been set up so that you can simply post the
articles, assuming that your news system is version 2.11. If it's an
earlier version or the mail is rejected, send to "comp-binaries-ibm-pc"
via one of the paths in my .signature below. (PLEASE DO NOT MAIL THEM TO
ncoast!allbery!!! My mailbox is full enough; I can process submissions
much more quickly if I don't have to manually move them to the submissions
directory for processing.)

Archive requests should be sent to one of the archive sites, or to the alias
"comp-binaries-ibm-pc-request" at the same address as above (below?).

Is anyone listening?
--------------------

I listen to suggestions from the users of this newsgroup; after all, it
exists for you much more than it does for me. Send your comments or
suggestions to the comp-binaries-ibm-pc-request address, and I will respond
to them as soon as I can.

Conclusion
----------

The guidelines presented herein will help to keep comp.binaries.ibm.pc
useful for all of us. Again, I welcome comments and/or suggestions to
improve this newsgroup.

++Brandon
