The main article on "degrees of consistency" is Gray, Lorie, Putzulu and Traiger, "Granularity of locks and degrees of consistency in a shared database", in G.M. Nijssen (ed.), Modeling in database management systems, North Holland, 1976 (originally issued as IBM Research Report RJ 3066, San Jose Research Center, Sept. 1975). Other very important (in my opinion) articles by this group of people (who were among the architects of System-R, in the context of which this work was done) are Eswaran, Gray, Lorie and Traiger, "The notions of consistency and predicate locks in a database system", CACM, Nov. 1976. and, Gray, "Notes on database operating systems", in Operating Systems: an advanced course, Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science (Vol. 60), 1978. -- Vassos Hadzilacos vassos@csri.toronto.edu
