Henry,
          SMTP has, within its design, the capablility of
sending/receiving interactive messages which appear on the destination
addresses terminal.  Take a look at the  command in RFC 821.  I
realize that not many implementations may use this, but it is part of
the SMTP spec.  You might want to check it out.  It might be fairly
trivial to adapt the mailer to recognize that command, and to have a
user interface to send the message.
