    [ Make a copy of /etc/passwd and put an asteric in all the passwords except
root ]

    Am I missing something here? To me, it just seems simpler to make a copy
of the file. Then clear the password file except for the root password. ( you
may wish to clear the passwd file after making the copy and include a grep
which finds user root and puts him safely in the file. A flag would then move
the backup file and replace the password file. This seems to be an ok aproach -
am I missing something?
