I suggest you read the FORTRAN/77 standard.  All compilers that claim
to be standard FORTRAN/77 (and thus have been validated by the FCVC)
must accept names conforming to that standard.  Those consist of 6
letters or digits, the first of which must be a letter.

This is why there are standards in the first place.
