Subscribing to micros (or any other newsgroup for that matter)
==============================================================

Hiding in your home directory is a file named .newsrc (if you don't believe
me try:
         % ls -a
see I told you it was there)

You must edit your .newsrc file to reflect the newsgroups you wish to
subscribe to. By subscribe I mean that you will be notified when any new
articles belonging to the news groups you subscribe to arrives here
("here" is officially known on the news network as utzoo).
You don't incur any "charges" for subscribing to a newsgroup other than the
on line time needed to read the news and any block space taken should you
wish to save any of the articles you read.

Below is a sample .newsrc file edited to include the micros newsgroup. To add
other groups you add the name onto the options line (newsgroups separated by
commas) and add a line for each newsgroup with the name of the newsgroup, a
colon, and an article index of the form: 1-number, where number is that of
a recent article in the newsgroup in question (use the % recent newsgroup
command, as below, to get an idea of what number to use).

options -n general,mircos
general: 1-275
micros: 1-1

When there is news from any of your subscribed newsgroups waiting for you to
read you will get the familiar "There is news" when you log in. To read your
news you may use:

         % news
read your news (just like before), or you can use

         % readnews
which is a little fancier, giving you a short header for
each article and prompting you as to whether you wish to
see more of the article. As well readnews seems a little
more robust and less prone to freezing than 'news' when
you have a large number of articles awaiting your perusal.

==================================================

I've listed below a number of newsgroups you might wish to peruse and/or
subscribe to. Use the recent command to view the newsgroup you are interested
in (recording the article number if you want to add it to your .newsrc).

        eg. % recent comp.sys.ibm-pc

newsgroup name newsgroup description

If you have any questions about news please feel free to send me mail
(login: steve), call me (5303, 4716 or 3475 will all work, at least
some of the time), or accost me in the halls. If I can't answer your
question I'll try and find someone who can.
