The performance problem with the icon system is in AmigaDOS's lousy support for file systems with small files and for wildcard searches. Kludging the workbench to make up for a (very fixable) performance problem in the underlying file system is a stupid idea. And fixing the AmigaDOS file system performance problems, as Perry pointed out a while ago, would make hard disks much more usable. I know Matt has the other point of view, and, last round, it was sort of left at an impass. Neither of us convinced the other. I would offer the opposite 'statement' to Matt's: Please fix your file system and drivers. Sooner or later, if you don't, I'll write and distribute a public domain one that works better! Michael P.S. Actually, from some dark hints that Perry dropped a while ago, he may do it before I do.
