I have an ATARI SH-204 with a very big problem. I think that I exceeded
the 40 folder limit since garbage suddenly appeared in the directory
windows. So I wrote off some of the stuff that wasn't backed up and
attempted to reformat. It just wouldn't do it (well it did a so called
format that took 1 second and didn't change anything). Can anyone help?

Some symptoms are:

 (1) After reboot Drive C: shows a copy of the contents of the auto folder
of the boot disk. All programs give TOS error #35 when a double-click
      is performed.

 (2) Writing to this disk caused all titles to turn to jibberish (and it
      adds many new icons).

 (3) Using HDX under the partion edit it shows 87.2Mb in partion 1 and
40.7Mb in partition 4 with the others unused and 0 Mb unused.

 (4) Using the markbad option gives an alert box stating
      "Logical sector out of range".

In all of the talk on the net about hard disks I haven't heard of this
problem before.

I would be very grateful for any help that I might receive.
(I really want to be able to use my hard disk again!)
