Here's what's happening.  Your options as far as hardware are set
correctly, from what you've said.  But his end is stripping nl (line
feeds) and your end isn't inserting them. That's filtering that's going on
in the comm program that isn't related to parity, etc.

Different programs handle it differently.  Yours expects the linefeeds
to be transmitted, while his expects yours to insert them after CRs.

It is usually an option that can be set with most comm programs.
