Sombody claimed that one should sometimes (often ?, always ?) program in assembly language because HLL compilers use complicated subroutine calling conventions that are often not needed. It seems to me that the obvious thing to do is to build smarter compilers that can make these optimizations. What is the state of the art on this issue ?
