I think my > 1541 is OK. I think your 1541 is fine too. Do you by chance have a printer interface such as the Grappler CD or other device plugged into the Cartridge Port? A friend of mine had the same problem, and that was what was wrong. I don't know how he is handling using/not using the printer, but I will ask. Try unplugging the printer and try again.
