another misunderstanding of the distinction between Backup and Archive:

Backups are created to protect against system crashes, they rightfully
 should be routinely deleted.

Archives (versions) are created to protect against changing our mind.
 Any sysop that attempts to maintain or destroy archives automatically
 is looking for an ulcer or lawsuit respectively.
