It costs me less to call my parents in Washington, DC than my friends in LA (from San Jose). There are relatively few good north-south UUCP connections in California; there are many more east-west connections. Internet connections are just about instantaneous, and many companies have leased lines. There's no reason to consider geography if the pathalias data reflects true costs (unfortunately, it doesn't). I am bothered by mailers that rewrite bang-form paths. It makes it impossible to avoid ihnp4, for example. But no one should be surprised when pathalias generates 6000-mile paths in the US; that's exactly what it should do. -- - Joe Buck {hplabs,ihnp4,sun}!oliveb!epimass!jbuck HASA (A,S) Entropic Processing, Inc., Cupertino, California
