at risk of the fact that undoubtedly millions of people are posting this
same information simultaneously, here is a 60-second condensation of three
product announcements i gleaned this morning (fri, 1/9/86) from atari base.
these were supposedly introduced yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show.

1. New ST configurations: 1 meg, 2 meg, 4 meg "Mega" ST's with detachable,
"improved" keyboards, one internal "slot" for addin card, builtin "800Kbyte"
floppy, and i think i read something about a bus expansion adaptor box.
base price was quoted as $1000. all 1040st compatible. no mention of blitter
or any expansion capabilities for 1040 or 520.

2. Laser printer, $1500, compatible with "industry standard" page description
languages. no mention of which engine it is based on. i think i read that
it interfaces to the dma port, but don't quote me. i also inferred that
it might be a while until they start delivering.

3. PC clone. this was mentioned on the net yesterday. 512 K standard,
expand to 640K. single floppy built in. unique multi-mode graphics controller
supporting mono text, cga, ega, and hercules. quoted $500 for pc, $200 for
multi-mode monochrome monitor.

i will make no inferences at this time as to the significance of these
announcements - i'd rather leave that up to the paranoids, flamers, and
atari afficionados out on the net.

atari base #1 is at 408-745-5308. the ces announcements are available
under "news".

fyi.
