I believe that the book referred to by the previous response should
have been

APL: AN INTERACTIVE APPROACH 
by Leonard Gillman and Allen J Rose.

The latest version (with nested arrays and other nice enhancements) is
in a pink/magenta rather than orange cover.

I also highly recommend this text.  It is very readable and written for
a wide cross section of proficiency levels.
