I realize that many of the contributors to this net are not fond of Appleworks
but in this case I think it may fill the bill for a multi-column capability. 
Not by itself but in conjunction with the Beagle Bros. program Macro-works.  
That program offers a GALLEY that allows multi-column printing of any word 
processor file.  It does not provide for saving them to disk, however.  The
macro support is pretty good but not as good as Auto-works by Glen Bredon.
Auto-works permits easier updating of macros and is all around more powerful
and flexible in that area but Macro-works is the only multi-column capabable
package I've seen.
