Using the original 'DIR' command to me is even more painful than opening up a window on the workbench. At least the window shows you something as it's working on it. 'DIR' is intent on sorting the directory and has to read it all, sort, and THEN finally display something. 'DIR' is SO painful, that I absolutely refuse to use it ( the output format is kinda quirky too). I've been using a version of 'ld' renamed as 'DIR', that displays as it reads. One could always add a OPT SORTED or something (or from where I'm from, '-s') and have it work the long way in the event I really care if it is sorted or not.
