They convert public domain binaries to HEX text, for sending across the net in text messages, to be converted back to Binary again on the Atari at the other end. A simple check-sum scheme is used to ensure nothing has been dropped in transmission. A few binaries have been circulated in the past couple of years using BINHEX and HEXBIN.
