I have been running with the Microtek (Tandon) 50 meg 1/2 height
drive for about 1 week now. It is remarkably faster. My benchmarks
indicate that the difference between real time and sys+user time
is exactly half of what it was before (with the 80ms drive I guess).
I notice about 20-30% overall speedup on a 1meg system.
It's also somewhat quieter. I did the replacement myself. The hardest
part was finding the screws to get the machine open (2 under the keyboard
and 2 in the back - then pry forward on the plastic in the front to
clear 2 molded catches).

I do notice that the number of incidents reported in /usr/adm/unix.log
has increased with the new disk, but I've had no hard errors (more than
I can say for the Toolin 40 meg I had before.)
The AT&T folks say that incidents in /usr/adm/unix.log are normal so I'm
ignoring it.

With these changes, I find the unix-pc about the same speed as a
diskless SUN 50/2 running 4.2BSD.
