Hello!

Although not a kit, unfinished furniture is cheaper than getting the "real
stuff". Such furniture might also to better and nicer than the real
stuff. It is available all over around here (Seattle).

I bought two oak coffee tables and a rocker unfinished. The pieces were
solidly made -- I would not want a coffee table that anyone, even a pro
football player, couldn't jump up and down on. We sanded, and stained
with oil, and rubbed them a bit to finish them.

This furniture is beautiful; it has a nicer finish than anything I saw in
the store. It is impervious to spills and drinking-glass rings, and upkeep
is simple (wipe with lemon oil every so often).

A few weeks ago, a lamp got wet and bled PAINT onto my table (?!), leaving
a black stain, impervious to soap. I was able to wet sand it away
completely in a couple of minutes, using clear lemon oil as the lubricant.
No indication that there was ever any problem.
