Lines: 18 For those of you who have not yet seen the November 1985 issue of ATLANTIC, I recommend the article by Bruno Bettleheim, ``Punishment Versus Discipline'' which is the the cover story. The abstract is included in the table of contents, so if you need something to motivate your reading this article, I quote: Punishment teaches a child merely that those who have power can force others to do their will. Only through emulation can a child acquire desirable values and a discipline based on them. The maxim ``Do as I say, not as I do'' won't work with children. An excellent and provocative article that should be read by all parents. -- Len Jacobs East West Journal {harvard,seismo}!bbnccv!ewj01!lj
