Carolina, Chapel Hill Lines: 18 This is my last word on this subject. Four points: 1) I have received more mail from people ( who object to 41 as an answer ) trying to tell me what virtual memory is. I KNOW what it is ! It's when one can't remember what they had for breakfast. 2) I still stand by my answer of 41; it is the only one which relates paging to the Meaning of Life. If anyone still objects i suggest they name a place and post their choice of weapons. 3) After all has been written on net.arch it still is a fact that the program behaviour in paged systems is not particularly well understood. Whether paging is useful or not depends on the particular system and its intended applications; number crunchers running batch programs do not really need it whereas multiple-user interactive systems do.
