I have had a Sony D-5 since June and have used it as a portable.  I found
it fine for use while walking, traveling on NY subways, etc, but not for
jogging or climbing stairs -- it seems to be sensitive to irregular
motion, especially when the batteries are getting weak.  BTW, alkaline
batteries seem to last about 4 to 5 hours; rechargeables (ni-cad) about
2.
