The difference between Phaser 1 and Phaser 2 brought out in The Devil in
the Dark had something to do with power since the first was too weak to
affect a silicon-based being.  This would fit in with your last comment,
maybe.
RE: WNMHGB - it was "phaser rifle" and "laser cannon".
