I called First Class Peripherals and asked them about the problems they've been having and they said that it was a problem in the old winchester drive mechanism, and they are using new mechanisms now that eliminate the noise problems (and probably the crash problems). Their return policy is 50/50, you pay for the postage to send it back, they'll pay to return it to you. With the one year warranty, its a pretty good deal. I also found out about a new 20 Megabyte Sider for the Apple // series, and it's on Xmas sale for $895, call First Class for more details. Benjy Mouse University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
