I got some software from Purdue (BSD 4.2 Unix), and the Makefile's
execute the commands "cc11", "as11", and "ld11". I haven't been able to find
any of them but "as11" on Unix VAXen at JPL. The Purdue people think they are
just part of Unix.

Are they part of BSD 4.2 on some special distribution, or are they
part of some other Unix, or are they a commercial product, or what? Does
anyone know where I can get them? Please reply directly to me since I don't
subscribe to the mailing list.

My system has a VAX running BSD, and a shared memory card to an LSI-11
doing real-time control of a robot arm. All developement is done on the VAX
in C and assembler. The control-program/operating-system on the 11 is
downloaded from the VAX. After the downloading, the two machines talk over
the shared memory with the VAX acting as master, and the LSI doing nothing but
make sure the robot arm obeys the VAX.

                        (-)NX in advance,
