Summary: An authoritative reference

According to an article in Sunset Magazine, (May 1979 Central Edition, April
1979 Desert/Southern Edition), snails *were* imported from France to
California, they did get out of control, and the 'common garden snail'
in most of California *is* the escargot snail.

Reference is made to a 74 page paperback book, published in 1978 by a
firm in Santa Rosa (see below) : Escargots from your garden to your
table, by Francois Picart. You can order it from the publisher, or it
may be in local bookstores.

As of the article date, "F. Picart Snails", 1550 Ridley Ave., Santa Rosa,
Calif. 94501 was buying garden snails for $.25 per pound (about 50-80
mature snails). They then sell them as escargot (for a lot more money!).
