I called them after the posting and expressed my displeasure even though I don't drink milk (which probably makes me unamerican in the eyes of the Dairy Council judging from their TV ads). Pam Kung was pleasant and apolagetic and as a result of the many objections, Hood pulled the registration cartons out of production. Brian G. Gordon was concerned about legal ramifications. Well, illegal acts are openly discussed all the time. Hardly a week goes by in some newsgroups without reference to the act of fornication or cohabitation! Do you want to censor postings to places that have silly laws? ...like draft registration? I strongly feel that milk cartons should not be a vehicle for government rhetoric which is all the registration law is. Jimmy Carter was slipping in the polls and need some "take-charge" moves after the Russians invaded Afghanistan. The brilliant ones were registation and the grain embargo. John Q. Public faced with political or ecconomic inefficacy always responds predictably with: "Yeah, build more bombs. F**kin'-A, nobody's gonna' push the ole' U S of A around." A take-charge move is good for senators and congressmen - they need re- election too. The deliciously interesting problem was that moderates would only vote for registration if it included women ( its ONLY registration right? Nobody's going to have to actually fight, right?). Whereas, the strong defense supporters generally tend to have a less enlightened view of equal rights issues and didn't like registering women. The take-charge move was stalemating and Jimmy got the moderates to accept male registration. So, I object to making laws for political gain at the expense of civil rights. When you need an army, use the free market instead of involuntary servitude. The capatalistic approach also eliminates the hidden cost of the "labor tax" on the economy and allows costs to be better predicted ( provided the poularity of a war is used to set soldiers' wages). There's probably a few more fornicators and other sex offenders than the 500,000 of us non-registrants, but there is no worry until the next major geo-political incident brings out the war-mongers and demands for enforcement. Mark Kaepplein Ps Anyone remember during the election when Ronald Reagan said he was against registration? Pps Anybody gotten more than three form letters from Selective Service? Any registered mail threats? Any FBI agents at your door?
