I was returning to Palo Alto airport and entered left downwind. There
were several planes in the normal right hand pattern. I was cleared to
land behind a plane on short final when I heard the following (numbers
are changed to protect the innocent):

tower: Cessna 280, PAO tower, make left 360 for spacing.

tower: (louder) Cessna 280, make left 360 for spacing.

tower: (irritated) Cessna 280, this is your third call.
       Make left 360 for spacing.

pilot: (feminine voice) Is that for 354?

tower: (angry) No m'am. Cessna 280, listen up to the radio, this is
your fourth call. Make left 360 for spacing.

pilot: (masculine voice) 280 is on the runway.

tower: ooohhh, Cessna 354, make left 360 for spacing.

pilot: (feminine voice) 354.
