I got some of this information from the 'Chronology' book, in which it summarizes the development of phasers. It was descibed as combining the effects of both lasers(penetrating power) and particle beam cannons(initial impact or 'punch'). The phasers on what was the *new* enterprise were either pulsed or phased through the warp engines for added power. I don't remember which, but it doesn't matter, I guess. Scott Weisman sdcsvax!sdcc7!ln63fcv these are my opinions, i think; sigh, if only i knew where to find them.
