We mearly indicate in our name where the majority of our holdings are. We are not America, there are many of them. The point is we as a nation believed ourselves to define what the americas should be ignoring the rest of the americas. Canadians are americans as are Columbians but they have developed expressions indicating one who is a citizen of that country, we have not because we think of ourselves as the Americans. It is interesting that we feel it is reasonable to call citizens of the USSR soviets but is not ok to call ourselves uniteds or some other word indicating our true nationality rather than our preferred geographical discriptor.
