I ask, directly, when we first meet, along with asking all those other
common questions: what do you do, how long have you been here, etc...
I don't think of it as an akward question, since I'm asking long before
the thought "O ye gods, let this sweetie be unattached" has entered my
mind, and if she says she's attached I ask about her SO, and if she
isn't, we can share some laughs about our Xs. I don't think I've ever
put anyone off by being direct, and its really just an honest question.
