This ``what is a yuppie'' topic has gotten to be a flaming match for
sour grapes and prejudice.

What is a yuppie? ``Yuppie'' is a demographic term which means just
what it says: A young, urban, professional. People who are below age
40, live in major urban areas, are well educated, and make a lot of
money. Exactly where you draw the line on income is a matter of debate.

What are yuppies like? In general, they have large disposable incomes:
a lot of money that they can do with as they please. How they spend
that money depends on the individuals.

Which is where the flaming-match aspect of this discussion comes in.
People associate yuppies with townhouses in Back Bay, BMW's, raquetball
clubs, skiing vacations, VCR's, and eating in expensive restaurants.
For some yuppies, this is accurate, for some this is not. In any event
there seems to be a mixture of jealousy at yuppies having things that
other people cannot, and prejudice against yuppies as having been born
into the preppy elite, gone to Harvard Law School, and being
ostentatious, spoiled, and narcisistic.

Sorry. Sometimes its true, sometimes its not. Prejudice is seldom
accurate, and sour grapes are never appealing.
