I am pretty sure there is a byte limit on the number of items in
gem piles, rock piles, dart piles, arrow piles, etc. In other words,
if you add one item to a pile containing 255 items, you will have
a pile of 0 items. I have not tested this explicitly, but I've never
been able to create a rock pile larger than 255 rocks. Also I have
not verified this in the code. BUT I bet you that if you stack your
diamonds in piles of 255 or less you will be ok.
