Funny, I recall quite a few warnings about the traffic levels. I cannot say whether any were from Gene Spafford, but they were there. The suggestions for cutting down traffic were basially twofold: have fewer newsgroups, and use more moderated groups. These were not uncontested, but they were the only proposals made that I remember. (Incidentally, as I recall, the pending demise of net.bizarre *was* mentioned in net.bizarre.
