I'm glad someone else is questioning the identity of the
killer!  When I saw the movie, it looked to me like the
janitor on the floor, after Glenn Close shot him.  A pal
of mine who saw it at another theatre thought it was Jeff
Bridges' character, but was just guessing.  A friend of
hers was positive that it was Bridges' character.  I was
puzzled that the murderer would be someone who was never
indicated as a suspect in the movie.  Someone suggested
to me that maybe this is a clever twist to the film--
shoot the killer at such an angle that everyone has to
guess his identity and create their own ending for the movie.
I like the idea of that, but doubt that's what was intended.
