They should be defined geometrically rather than bitmap form. PostScript path definitions or similar would be preferred, but Metafont definitions would do as well. I have heard that someone has designed a set of computer helvetica fonts using Metafont, and (I think) I recall seeing a remark about it on Usenet, but I cannot remember where.
