            I think that your laughter was actually a reaction to the intense 
anxiety you unconsciously felt while watching THE EVIL DEAD. Although I think
that the film had (intentionally?) funny moments, it was also somewhat scary.
My nominations for scariest movies are:

          NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
          THE THING (Carpenter's)
          DIE, MONSTER, DIE (starring B. Karloff)
          WAIT UNTIL DARK
          CARRIE
          BURNT OFFERINGS (the car escape, the house falling apart)
          THE EVIL DEAD ('nuf said)
