I read in a local newspaper today that Ricky Wilson died recently of cancer at the age of 31. No other details were provided. While I'm not going to say he was one of the greatest guitarists, his contributions to the zany, original music of the B52s deserve some recognition. While I'm on the subject of great (favorite) guitarists, another who died about 3 years ago, who I did not see mentioned in all the discussions, was James Honeyman Scott of the Pretenders. I was fortunate enough to see the Pretenders at the Orpheum in Boston in January 1982, and this remains one of my favorite concert experiences, in part because of their skill with their instruments. In contrast I saw the new version of the Pretenders last year at Red Rocks, which I thought was mediocre by comparison.
