Sorry Scott but it just isn't the way you've been told.  Looking in my copy of
the third edition Websneers Dictionary I found:
     ACRYLIC: (...) A highly refined product derived by boiling VIRGIN ACRYLIC
              until it thickens into a thick glossy sap.  VIRGIN ACRYLIC is 
              manufactured by boiling a mixture of olive oil, car tires, and 
              old virgins.
