Summary: it's a lot smaller than you think

According to some very preliminary data that I have taken using sampling
techniques that are not perfect (albeit whose flaws are very well
understood), I currently estimate that there are between 1500 and 6000
readers of net.cooks worldwide. I am hoping to get better data as we refine
the sampling technique and also as we encourage more sites to participate in
it. I would guess that there are even fewer readers of net.general, except
perhaps inside AT&T where it is used extensively for selling dinette sets in
central New Jersey.
