[I tried to use the distribution option, but it insisted on sending
out empty articles. So, I am sending this out to the whole world.
I apologize to the whole world if you don't want to see this. Let
me just add that many local chapters of the Sierra Club have started
singles-only activities. Two of the more significant efforts are
in the LA and San Francisco local chapters. The rest of you outside
of NJ might want to look into it. ]

I just received the September-October New Jersey Sierrian.
There is a list of NJ Sierra Club hikes, canoe trips and assorted
activities. There are a number of singles-only activities. For the
singles in NJ that enjoy these types of activities but find they
have no one to go with, or just don't know where to go, the Sierra Club
can provide a way to get to know outdoor NJ and get to know other
singles. You must be a member of the Sierra Club to join in these
activities, but the membership fee is small (about $15, I think;
less for students). By joining the National chapter you automatically
become a member of your local chapter.
There is an article in the Sierran saying that in NJ there
have been some very good turnouts at singles-only activities. I think
this would be an excellent way to meet lots of new people and have a
good time outdoors.
Hikes that I remember are to Hartshorne Woods in the
Highlands, Monmouth Country, hiking in Harriman State Park in Rockland
County, New York, Bear Mountain State in New York, hiking along the
Appalachian Trail in northwestern NJ, and some canoe trips in the
Pine Barrens.
If anyone wants more information on this, please drop me
a note. (Unfortunately, I am no longer single and unable to participate
in any of these activities. Gee, if my husband saw the "unfortunately"
he'd kill me! Really Al, it's not unfortunate!)
