The question was: what aircraft has been produced in the greatest
numbers? I thought I could get ahold of a copy of Jane's to get
the exact figures, but I haven't been able to. These numbers
come from several different books. If I get a chance, I will
update with better numbers.

My guess was wrong, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. WWII military
figures:

    B-17 12,731
    B-24 18,482
    Spitfire 20,000+

There seems to be some agreement that around 26-27 thousand
Cessna 172s have been built.

The winner: Messerschmidt bf-109, all models, in excess of 30,000.
