I have similar feelings about knives vs. guns. My guess is it's because
we've all been cut accidentally at one time or another in our lives and
know what it feels like. Most of us have never been shot. It's much
easier to empathize with something you've experienced yourself. We've also
been desensitized by endless shootings on television and in films where the
real effects of being shot are censored out to avoid offending the majority
of people watching.

P.S.: Our news software was down for most of the past two weeks so I'm
just getting back into things. Sorry if I've missed any articles or
mail I should have responded to.
