I had a similar thing happen.  My five year old Tabby,
Thunder, who had never had problems using his box, walked
over to my bed while I was standing next to it.  He yowled
loudly, pee'd on the bed, yowled again, and looked alternately
at me and the wet spot.  It was easy to see the blood on the
white sheet.

I felt like saying "Good boy, Lassie, can you lead me to 
poor, trapped Timmy?"
