We've never (up till now) set times for our daughter (now age 2.4).
Sure enough, when she's tired she goes to bed. Sometimes at 1630,
sometimes at midnight. Sometimes she gets up at 0500 -- and becomes
quite insistent about waking up the rest of the household.

Moral: Leaving things to Mother Nature does not necessarily produce the
best results. While Megan might grow up more relaxed and in tune with
her physical moods, she might also be undisciplined or lazy. And she has
to learn to be more considerate. (Even if she does go off to play alone,
just try (as a parent) to sleep while you hear your toddler rummaging
around the house unattended... :-)
