Actually, it would be utterly insane for the Red Sox. Rich Gedman is a .300
hitter capable of hitting 30 homers a year and has probably the best arm in
the league, and the catcher has to take a great deal of the credit when a
young starting staff performs as well as the Sox's did in the first half of
the season (too bad the law of averages and complete lack of a bullpen
caught up with them later). Within a year or two Gedman will be generally
acknowledged as the best catcher in baseball. Other Red Sox fans I've
talked with generally agree that Boggs and Gedman are the only two
indispensable players they have.

Admittedly, with Hassey the Yankees don't have a pressing need for a
catcher (although Gedman could probably hit 40 homers a year in Yankee
Stadium). This is probably a trade best not made for all concerned.
