Our son, now age six months, received the first part of the DPT series
at four months. He had a fairly severe reaction to the pertussis vacine.
He ran a fever of 101-102 degrees measured in the armpit (thus his real
temperature was more likely 102-103) for four days. That was with 
tylenol and sponge baths. This time he had two half doses separated by a
couple of weeks and he has been just fine.

This method supposedly does not reduce the efficacy of the immunization.
There are better alternatives to eliminating immunizations altogether.
