I think they do.  Three of our five cats are litter mates, born
to one of the others.  I noticed purring by the mother and the
little ones when they nursed.  And now that they are grown, they
commonly purr when grooming each other--something they often do
when in a good mood.   So they seem to use purring as a general
feel-good signal between themselves, and not just with humans.

Maybe they wonder why we don't purr when they rub against our legs?
