The reason I set a particular bedtime for my kids is that if they do not
have a certain number of hours of sleep (9 to 10) they are completely
not-functional in the morning for breakfast and/or getting ready for bus and
school. 
Of course, sometimes I want some time for myself, but if the next day is not
a school day and I still want to do something on my own, we understand that
and they stay up without my attention.
