What's inherently irrational about love? I think that love is something people
can choose to treat irrationally, especially if the think they'll get more 
emotional juice this way.

Why does commitment have to be unconditional?  If I had a friend or partner who
turned racist or sexist on me, I would first try to change his/her mind. If 
he/she failed to see the error of their ways or convince me I had erred in my
judgement, I would gracefully distance.
