Yesterday, the Blue Jays finally clinched the AL-East. One interesting
thing about the game is that the Jay's pitcher Dole Alexander is an ex-Yankee.
The Yankees just dropped him a few seasons ago, and the Jays snatched him up.
In fact the Yankees are still paying most of his salary ($740,000 a year).
I guess this doesn't please Mr. Steinbrenner too much.
Also in the game, Garth Iorg (rhymes with gorge) drilled two line shots
right at Yankees pitchers (one had to leave when he tried to protect his face
with his pitching hand), and also sent a foul ball ripping into the Yankee
dugout. Garth also ran into the Yankee second baseman Willie Randolph when
a ball deflected off of the pitcher's glove causing Randolph to change
direction at the last minute. Maybe Garth wanted to shrink the Yankee
lineup in case today's games mattered. Speaking of today's game....
This afternoon Yankee pitcher Phil Niekro won his 300th career victory
with a shutout over the Blue Jay farm hands. Phil went the distance, and
got a great round of applause from the Blue Jay fans when it was over.
He also got a little teasing from his teammates. When he came out to pitch
the 9th, leading 8-0, the Yankees had 3(!) pitchers pretending to warm up.
When there was just one out left to get, Phil's brother Joe made that
long walk to the mound... but they left him in and he held on to that 8 run
lead. Congrats to Phil Niekro.
