This might sound like silly witchcraft, but red brake shoes don't squeak
nearly as much as black ones, all other things being equal. I almost always
succeed at curing bicycle brake squeak by putting on a new pair of
red Kool Stop brake pads. I think there's something about the formulation
of the black rubber that makes it more prone to squeaking. I strongly
recommend the "Kool Stop" brand (they also make the best rim tape...).

Also, dirty pads squeak more than clean ones. So replacing dirty black
pads with clean red pads should make a lot of difference.
