I called Atari, and they claim that they are shipping Kermit with
the C compiler/assembler/linker package. I don't know if this
version can do binary downloads or just 7-bit, and don't much
care, as so many mailer systems chew up 8-bit files. A version
of the binhex 4.0 protocol (Macintosh 8-bit to 7-bit file coding)
would be nice....

("What's this Kermit thing?". Kermit is a communications protocol
developed at Columbia University to facilitate transmission of text
files between mainframes and micros. Many versions support 8-bit
file transfer. It has good error-checking, although it is slow.
Kermit is available for damn near everything: if
you want your Cray-1 to talk to your Commodore 64, they both speak
Kermit. Kermit is available through many user's groups. Columbia
U. will NOT supply disks with Kermit on it to people. They do
sell tapes with the entire Kermit collection (mainframe and micro),
if you need to bootstrap it. okstate and cu20b have Kermit online
in various versions for uucp and ftp, respectively.)
