We used to have one of these magnificent creatures regularly visiting
our back yard in Gainesville, FL.  He pecked a hole fifteen feet long
though an old basswood tree, sounding much like a small jackhammer.
But when he started on the aluminum siding (not my choice BTW), it was
really noisy!  He never seemed to learn that it was not a good place to
work for bugs (or was it?)  They are certainly worth keeping an eye
peeled for in wooded areas, esp. near creeks, in FL if you're there.
