There is a short editorial in the Book Review section
of the San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday 9/22/85, on
censorship that might be of interest to some participants in
this discussion.

There is some question among netters as to whether
censorship of pornography might lead to wider forms of
censorship. Well, according to this editorial, it
already has. Even though most of the censorship legislation
on the right-wing agenda has yet to be enacted, there
has been a sharp increase in the incidence of "obsecene"
books being removed from public and school libraries.
Pressure is also being placed on bookstores. The situation
promises to worsen given the current make-up of the
federal judiciary.

There have also been suggestions that some netters
with opinions on the subject need to further their background
reading on the topic of censorship.
James Joyce's "Ulysses" was banned for many years in
this country. Prefacing some editions of the book can
be found the judge's opinion that finally admitted "Ulysses"
to the country. This is an interesting piece of reading
because it gives some insight into how censorship was
implemented not too long ago in the U.S. Worth checking out.
