net.columbia is a fine name. I, for one, have always wanted to talk
about the Columbia river, but was unaware there was a group for it. Or
maybe the group is for discussion of Columbia University? I wouldn't
want to post to the wrong newsgroup...

However, when I want to talk about the space shuttle, I go looking for
a group, but find ... nothing? net.space.shuttle would be an obvious
name. So what's wrong with it? The Columbia is only one of a fleet of
shuttles, so it is not very appropriate, and it is certainly not very
descriptive. Can you imagine net.rec.model-t being the discussion
group about cars in general? It doesn't make much sense. Would the
discussion about the refurbishility (what an icky word) of the
Enterprise go in net.columbia? It would certainly go in
net.space.shuttle.
