I claimed in a recent article that the melody to this song was much older than Haydn. According to Donald J. Grout's "A History of Western Music", Haydn wrote that song to be used as the Austrian national anthem. Subsequently he used it as the theme in a theme-and-variations movement in a string quartet, Op.76, no.3. I doubt if he would have approved of its more recent use. apologetically, Jeff Winslow
