In fact I think I'll write them a nasty letter. Soon after DEC reinstalled our machine, two of my root packs got blown away by HP hard errors. The best hardware guy they have has been telling us for days that the problem is either in Unix itself (on the disk packs) or the distribution tape I was using to rebuild the packs. Why? Because his almighty VMS diagnostics couldn't find a single problem with the disk drive... DESPITE the fact that Unix keeps receiving these hp0a: hard errors. What a moron! There he sits at the console with this shit smile on his face telling me that we should reformat the disks simply because "it's the only thing left to do." "You see John... our diagnostics write 1's and 0's on the disk and..." Arrrggghhhhhh! He remains oblivious to the evidence - i.e. everything was 100 percent kosher until DEC started fiddling with the hardware - and he refuses to gather more evidence to track down the problem. He doesn't care what the problem is. After brow-beating him with the facts at the top of my lungs I finally got him to swap the RH controllers.... and guess what.... the problem suddenly cleared itself up. Imagine that! It wasn't Unix after all! These DEC people are so enamoured with their own product propiganda they can't see beyond their own limited excuses and rational. Well I've had it with these board-swapping mechanics and their "professional products designed for professionals!" - Mad as hell
