Illinois law required me to retrofit a bumper to it, though. The height of the bumper has to be within 3 inches of the of the specified height, which is determined by gross vehicle weight. (And my truck has been described as gross.) The lighter the vehicle, the lower the requirement. (Sorry, I don't remember what it is. Maybe 19" or so.) Trouble is, I never found out about the requirement until I tried to get the beast inspected. Never got stopped, never questioned. For about 6 months, inspections were required of ALL trucks, including RV's. Apparently the powers that be decided it wasn't working, because 6 months later inspections were abolished for all vehicles under 8000 lbs. gross weight. The bumper laws are still lying dormant, somewhere, but good luck getting them enforced. If you feel strongly enough, you could file complaints about the offending trucks, but try to avoid nailing those drivers who behave like intelligent human beings on the road. There may be a few a--holes out there driving these oversized Tonka toys, but there are a few pretty decent folks in them as well. (As far as I'm concerned, anyone who drives like an idiot deserves to get nailed. I've gone as far as following one or two lunatics, but I always manage to run out of nerve before I can flag down a squad car.) "4 wheel drive trucks don't run over compact cars, a**holes do."
