Since the front are the driving wheels, you need the snows there for traction going up hill, etc. If yo leave regular tires on the rear, your up hill traction will be fine, but the rear wheels will slip out VERY easily on turns. Thsi is especially true for studded tires. If you plan to keep the car as long as you say (135K on last car), and rotate front and back each winter, the wear on the snows will just be saving wear on the regular tires, so the long run additional cost of tires will be minimal. The biggest cost will be for two more rims.
