My brother had a teacher who tried to change him from left
handedness in first grade.  My mother (also a lefty) went to 
school and raised holy hell.  She was convinced that it caused him 
problems in learning to read that gave him problems later.  It is
true that he was a late-bloomer and still hates to read. 
(Although he is a lawyer now, and I am sure makes more than
I do :-)

One thing you might consider:  I am sure that you will get a
pretty unanimous decision here that such a thing is dangerous.
However, I have learned that it is also dangerous to tell
parents that they are raising their child wrong.  Consider how
close the friends are, and be very tactful if you decide to
bring it up.  (And provide sources and references, too.)
