Actually, the aircraft began to break up after the left main landing gear
and undercarriage struck two cars travelling on a highway north of the
airport.

The L-1011 then went into a left bank and collided with a low-profile
water storage tank and burst into flames. The aircraft's engines were
at full throttle when the plane struck the tank.

NTSB investigators said that 8 minutes after the airplane crashed (6:08 CDT),
the sensors at the north end of 17L detected a wind shear....
