*MY* copy, labelled  UNIX User'S Manual, Release 3.0, June 1980,
has exactly the same wording under tty(4) as my V.2 manual, under
termio(7)...the phrase beginning

    If ICANON is set, canonical processing is enabled.  ....

The SVID is still the only thing that comes close to describing it
completely, however.
