Before this goes too far, I want to say that I've always been
initially attracted to "nice" men, and all the women I know except
one also seem to hang around/pair up with nice men. I can only
think of one instance where the guy I approached was not-so-nice,
and I've never even remotely been attracted to a "jerk".

I think I can chalk my experience up to my liking for technical types,
who in general have never gotten proficient at the "macho male" image.
Most of my female aquaintences also seem to end up with
intellectuals of one variety or another, and even the non-intellectual
men we like are at least readers (but then, we're thinkers and
readers, too). Another factor may also be that I'm generally around
nice guys, so why search for not-so-nice ones.

I've never really seen the "women attracted to not-so-nice men"
phenomenon in action, and I have a lot of women friends.

So it's not universal.
