I've said this before, and I'll say it again. 
DON'T USE VCR CLEANING TAPES!  I don't care if they say
they're non-abrasive and suitable for a baby's bottom.

DON'T routinely clean the heads.  If a noise problem indicating
dirty heads appears, THEN clean the heads MANUALLY and DIRECTLY
at the heads.  If you don't know the proper procedure for doing
this safely (and you DO have to do it right to avoid damage) then
let a professional do it or learn the proper technique.

Cleaning tapes are to be avoided.
