I know nothing of the Magnavox 1040 . . . wish I could have found it near me.
     
An alternative might be the Pioneer 5010 -- I bought one last Friday for
$249, choosing it over the Technics PL-2 at $288 and the Sony ??-30 for
$289.  Don't kill me if those model numbers are wrong.
     
The Sony wasn't programmable and the Pioneer doesn't show elapsed time.  The
Technics had all that, plus index selection (aside: how many disks have
indexes?), but I didn't care for the track display or the size and location
of the buttons as compared to the Pioneer.  The Pioneer just seemed to be
more of a precision machine.  I particularly like the huge PLAY button.
