I loved the rest of your article (which I've left out for brevity). It
brought back many memories and much nostalgia. I have my own set of wierd
tales about wierd professors. (They seemed to get a little more stable at
the graduate level, or maybe I just got used to them by then (-: ).

However, since you asked, the answer is no, Ph.D. students aren't
_required_ to go through psychoanalysis, or any other kind of
psychotherapy, though it's usually highly recommended (up to 500 hours of
personal therapy can count towards the total internship hours required).

_Psychoanalysts_ are required to go through psychoanalysis to become
psychoanalysts (a long and expensive process which partly explains why they
charge so much which, in turn, creates a vicious spiral of inflation (-: ).
Being a psychoanalyst isn't technically an academic degree. Most
psychoanalytic institutes require an M.D. or Ph.D. in psych for admittance
and what they teach is strictly psychoanalysis. Not many people bother to
become psychoanalysts any more because, given the state of the economy and
the current disfavor of Freud's theories, not many people can afford to pay
their fees.

Shut up, Jerry. You're lecturing again.

Sorry.
