The author is ELIZABETH LYNN.  She also wrote The_Sardonyx_Net, among
others.  The books are often classified as "lesbian feminist
science-fantasy".  In my opinion, they are simply exceeedingly well-written
fantasy adventures.  They present an /interesting/ view on sexuality.
