"Homosexual" sounds technical and clinical, and therefore colder.  I find it 
a perfectly acceptable term in the right contexts.  I don't find "Negro" an 
acceptable term.  

However it *does* bother me to hear G-/H- used as a noun.  I'm more than just 
gay.  It's a bad habit "society" has to define us that way, as if we can think 
of nothing else but sexual issues.
