Since DOS is not re-entrant, if it's called from DOS and you make a DOS call it'll do nasty things which can well include freezing. Get SideKick. It checks, it's cheap enough (even if it's not freeware), and it's a better program (I tried PCwindow but the only think of any use was the notepad and it's pretty poor).
