Message-ID: <213@drivax.UUCP> Date: Thu, 22-Aug-85 12:10:44 EDT Article-I.D.: drivax.213 Posted: Thu Aug 22 12:10:44 1985 Date-Received: Sun, 25-Aug-85 01:40:17 EDT Distribution: net Organization: Digital Research, Monterey, CA Lines: 24 Xref: watmath net.unix:5456 net.unix-wizards:14538 I have been having trouble with a VAX runing System V. It seems that randomly some utilities will fail with an invalid instruction and a core dump. Utilities like the C compiler, ls, and accounting. This will last for about a minut, then clear up. This all started after I installed SV from the distribution tape on a system with an RP07, and an RM03. I had to add the definition for the RM03 to the gd driver to make it work. Is anyone using gd out there? I was not using gd on another system that was runing SV and I didn't see anything like this. The other system used gt for tape, and the tape drives were flakey on that system. Are gd and gt flakey? I did have some problems with a bad memory board, but that has been fixed. In fact errpt(1m) shows that I haven't had any kind of error since last sunday (well, 3 soft errors on the RP07). I had to rebuild the root file system after the memory board was fixed, so there shouldn't be any leftover problems from that. After using System V for over a year I can sure see why people like BSD. -- Alan Fargusson. { ihnp4, amdahl, mot }!drivax!alan
