Being in one of the first cars to drive down Commercial in Truckee after the race gave me an interesting perspective on this. One, there was a 1K marker although it was on a fast downhill, thus easy to miss. There was no 500 or 200M markers, however, the rodeo banner was a dull brown affair that said nothing about the bike race. The race banner (Davis had seen four of these by Tuesday), was about 200 meters down the road, visible from the end of the street, and was the usual colorful Coors banner with the AT&T timer and stage town name banner hanging beneath it. A somewhat lame excuse, but I guess an understand- able error, especially in the absence of a 200m sign and in the presence of Bernard Hinault.
