I tried (2) and found that earplugs are extremely  uncomfortable  to  sleep
in.  (I  use  Comfits.  If  anyone  can point to a better brand I'd be very
greatful).  After a  few  hours  use  they  _hurt_.  The  tolerable  period
shrinks with regular use.  I also suspect that prolonged regular use may be
damaging to the ear drums, though I have no proof one way or the other.

I'm currently working on (1) and getting depressed over the cost of housing
in L.A..
