I think the common term for people like this is  "est-holes".  Fortunately,
the  phenomenon  isn't usually permanent.  After about 6 months they notice
that all their former friends are now avoiding them  and  life  has  become
rather  lonely.  They're also having a hard time finding new friends. (Even
est-holes need friends (-:  ).  Social  pressure  now  takes  the  form  of
operant conditioning and the obnoxious behavior fades away pretty rapidly.

Whenever someone tells me they're off to an est-like seminar I wait and see
how  they  come out of it.  If they're an est-hole I just write them out of
my social calendar for six months or so (just to get  the  social  pressure
ball rolling).  That's usually long enough for the problem to go away.
