If you don't mind writting a little (probably alot) of 'C'
Softcraft has a network version of the Btrieve library for
this very purpose.  I know they are up on Novell but I don't
know about Ethernet.

Btrieve is really pretty good.  They support other languages
too.  They are in Austin, Texas and advertise in most PC
mags.
