For a number of years, I've been wearing earplugs called "E.A.R. plugs"
that are made of soft plastic foam.  You mash them down into a small cylinder
between your fingers, insert them in your ear canal, and they slowly expand
out to fill the space.  They stick out a bit from your ear so they would
be uncomfortable to sleep on as-is, but you can shorten them some with a
knife.  They cost about 25 cents/pair from the local safety supply
company or flying club.  They seem quite comfortable for long periods
(though I seldom wear them when asleep).
