This morning I saw one of the new trains in operation again. It appears
that there are still problems, however. The usual mode of operation for
the new trains is to 'push' into San Francisco, and 'pull' to San Jose.
In order to control the train when pushing, special cars are run at the
'end' of the train that contain cab controls, allowing remote control
of the locomotive. This morning's train was not pushing, though. It 
looked like there was a bit of improvisation going on, the marker light
(required by law) was hung at a strange place... --Steve
