I havn't played rogue for some time, but in 5.2 there use to be a neat bug.
If you read an enchant  scroll and when it said "As you read the
scroll it... -more-" you hit ^Z and sent the process a hangup signal.  Rogue
would save your game after enchanting the .  If you did a
rogue -r, you would still have the scroll and your  would be
one class higher.  It did have a tendency to cause confuse monster scrolls to
do weird things (i.e. don't read them after you do this); but who needs them
anyways when you have a (+8,+8) mace [more like nerve gas] and -6 armor.

I don't know if this bug still exists.  It seems like the same thing that
was mentioned above.
