I believe that there is a generic name for the # symbol, popularly
called the 'pound sign' or 'number sign'.  Further, I believe that
the name begins with 'octo-' (octopoint?).  Extensive consultation with
U.C.S.D., San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Union newspaper, my 
friends and relations have turned up nothing.  

Is there such a generic term?  If so, what is it?  Or am I imagining 
the whole thing?  Thanks for whatever help you can give me on this.
