The purpose of the Urey-Miller experiment was to ascertain if any AMINO ACIDS could be synthesized UNDER THE NATURAL CONDITIONS present on the earth during its formative period. It was already well known that organic compounds (including amino acids) could be synthesized from compounds that were purely inorganic; the issue here was natural conditions (this sort of precludes such things as synthesis in a 5,000 psi catalytic hydrogenator...). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ | Larry Lippman @ Recognition Research Corp., Clarence, New York | | UUCP {decvax, dual, rocksanne, rocksvax, watmath}!sunybcs!kitty!larry | | {rice,shell}!baylor!/ | | VOICE 716/741-9185 syr!buf!/ | | TELEX {via WUI} 69-71461 ansbak: ELGECOMCLR | | | | "Have you hugged your cat today?" | +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
