Hmm, this game seems to have sorted itself out with lightning speed.
Apparently, we already have an Austro-Turkish alliance facing an
Russo-Italian one, and France and Germany are about to bid for English
services. It is well to note that the Austrians and Russians will
also be lobbying England to take different sides; the Austrians would
prefer England ally with Germany to distract Russia, provide a later
balance against Germany, and to force France to seek Italian aid
in the West (thus freeing Austria a bit), while the Russians would
prefer England ally with France to preserve Sweden and keep the
Italians fully concentrated on the Balkans. Turkey and Italy, the
allies, should not be as certain as to their preferences. The
critical struggle regarding the course of the game over the next few
years will not take place on the battlefield, but rather in the London
embassies.

Most interesting is how it is in Austrian interests to both support
(encourage the English alliance) and subvert (encourage Italian
ambitions) Germany. If cunning is needed anywhere, it is in Vienna.
