Our rascally VAX of late has been using this questionable new file allocation scheme: when the root pack, which /usr/spool sits on, fills up, it appears to reallocate inodes from elsewhere on the pack. Result: Everything gets scrambled, news and mail are lost, I curse the thing. Seriously though, we have dropped news/mail from sometime on August 21 to sometime on August 22. I will not know the exact times until the restore is complete. And, by the way, if anyone knows why an 11/780 with 4.1 BSD and 2.10.2 news might be doing this anti-social thing when the file system fills up, you might let me know.
