The correct acronym is MIPS -- Million Instructions Per Second. What is a "Million Instructions Per" ??? Note that MIPS is both singular and plural. (Actually its always plural, but saying 1 MIPS makes it look singluar.) Another way to tell that the S is necessary. If it weren't, you'd say 1 MIP, but 2 MIPs (lower-case s) to make it plural.
