The law allows you to use deadly force in self-defense.  You have no way of
knowing if an attacker is going to attempt to kill you or not, but if they
are using violence I believe you have a right to protect yourself (or your
helpless child).  And it is CERTAINLY possible that (in the example given)
an eleven-month old child could die from being sexually abused and beaten
(believe me, it happens!)
