A date has been set for the player's strike...Aug 6th. The strike date was set
in hopes of forcing the owner's to the bargaining table. In Jerome Holtzman's
column "On Baseball" in the 7-16-85 Chgo. Tribune, one owner is quoted as
saying,"This definitely puts the pressure on us. This is going to smoke us
out." The owner did not want to be identified. Another club official, again
asking anonymity, said, "I don't know what's going to happen in the next three
weeks, but if there is a strike, once it begins, the owners will hang tough...
once we lose all that television revenue (from the cancellation of the playoffs
and World Series...about $100 million, or approx. $4 million per team)
we don't have much to lose again until this time next year. I can assure you
the owners would not allow the 1986 season to open unless they got almost
everything they want."
I sure hope everything can be straightened out before Aug. 6th. If not, well,
football season is just around the corner! If they (the players and the owners)think that the fans' life revolves around baseball, they are in for a rude
awakening (I hope).
