The car seems to be reliable; after 85k miles I have had few major (or even minor) failures. The most trouble I have had was ~5 yrs ago; I had a leak in the power steering box. Service is no more expensive than for any other car, and 'Tune-Up-Masters' will do a tune up for $15.00. Most metro areas have at least one Volvo dealership, and Sacramento, CA has two. The auto club (or anyone else with a "jim stick") can get into any car, locked or not. It really doesn't make sense to worry about break-ins.
