I've usually used tomatoes,onions and peas (combined or separately) in place of the corn, and these are mixed in with the ground beef as it simmers. I also add some Lee & Perrins Woucester Sauce to the ground beef as it is browning. One caveat,for US cooks, when making the mashed potatoes don't use very much butter (ie like creamed potato) as this makes the potato too runny( I know because a girlfriend tried making it for me once and the potato sat on top of the pie like a white gaucamole dip).
