Bullshit.  The ordinary ones have the same purpose as bras do (particularly
during athletics).  The ones with plastic inserts are, contrary to popular
belief that they are "falsies", are for having the "family jewels" survive
hockey games (and other such sports having roving feet and/or long sticks).  
They are uncomfortable, but the alternative is worse.
