If you think about them in terms of how fast the baby will grow and how often you want to/will do laundry, you can determine how many you will need. There are some items that will become critical when you need them, although they will not be used on a daily basis. Be sure to have a cool-mist humidifier and a rectal thermometer. If you are planning on using disposable diapers, buy a box of the cloth diapers that have extra padding in the middle; these are great for putting on your shoulder for burping and wiping up if the baby spits up. Keep some Desitin and some Ammen's medicated powder around also; sometimes one works if the other doesn't on a raw bottom (my daughter's disposition didn't change when her teeth came in, but her bottom would look like a battlefield...) Hope this helps.
