If women do break off relations more often than men (Someone once 
said he felt there is a time-dependence in that women break off long-
term relationships more often, but men cut off short-term ones...),
there may be a power-distribution-related desperation to it, along the
lines of "I've tried saying nicely why I'm unhappy with you, and you
do change for a week or so, but sooner or later we are back to the
behavior that is driving me crazy..."  Maybe men, having gotten past
some fix-it-rather-than-break-it threshold, have more (blind?) faith
in making things work...
