If I am not running rn 4.3, though...
However, your shell line is not equal to my program.  My program was equal
to the .rnmac line:
@x	| tr g-la-fs-xm-rzyG-LA-FS-XM-RZY a-zA-Z > /dev/null
I didn't have a putchar() anywhere in there...

That's what I get for attempting subtlety, I guess.
