On the other hand, it has some big disadvantages...

(a) Unless you live in one of the big technical communities, most people
you meet will be far away.  (Having lost many SOs, even highly metaphysical
ones, through Long Distance, I am not a big proponent of written
communication as a means of sustaining interpersonal communication in the
long run, I am afraid.)

(b) Often hidden but "important" facts are obscured initially.  In some
ways this is good, since you can meet persons who you have unjustified
prejudices against due to appearance.  On the other hand, personally I have
had several people who began to write nice communicative letters to me,
only to suddenly stop altogether when they discovered I was an "Old Person"...
