For users doing document preparations with TeX or LaTex '\' is probably among the 5 most frequently used characters. Making '\' the quote character would mean having to remember to strike it twice every time you wanted one. I don't object to the extra keystrokes as much as the ease of forgetting, which winds up just leaving out the '\'. -- David Jacobson
