I'm sure it's the engagement dogs on the transmission gear which are rounded
off.  You'll have to pull the engine and tear down the tranny to get to it.
Get a Chilton or Clymer and check it out.  You might have to replace the gear
and the gear it mates to (with slots the dogs engage).
