I traveled from Berkeley to Portland on a Green Tortoise bus last summer. You can`t beat the price ($39) unless you hitch, and it is a TRIP! The trip was overnight, with communal breakfast. I`d travel on them again anytime! I met interesting people on the bus, had a fun time getting to know them (the atmosphere is more like a rolling party than public transportation), and really regretted leaving when I got off in Portland. Our driver had a ban against alcohol and tobacco, but it varies with the drivers. Definitely a counterculture experience, though, as sleeping is on foam mattresses on the bus and bathing is in some hot springs on the way. Not for yuppies. By way of contrast, I had to take a Greyhound from Portland to Tillamook, and was bored silly. Unqualified recommendation, if you can accept a 'hippie-like' experience. I`d love to hear other comments, esp. other alternative bus lines operating in North America and Europe. Replies to: Leon Marr decvax!yale!marr allegra!yale!marr marr@yale.ARPA P.S. I`m planning a trip out west too, and I`d like to go from LA to Vancouver.
