This was mailed to you, but the pathname in your letter didn't work, and
our site doesn't recognize RICE.ARPA. So, without further ado:

Well, I've worked for IBM, and used their computers, too. It's been
3 years since I quit to go back to school, so I really can't say much about
what their internal computers are like these days...I would imagine that
they are now as they were then, better than *most* but certainly not all of
their competitors; give me a lisp machine or a pyramid anyday over a 370.
And I'll certainly ceep my MacIntosh, thank you, and not buy a PC!

As to I've Been Moved, I have no idea what branch of the company you worked.
I have seen several people in the business side of the company moved about
arbitrarily. I worked in the laboratories as a system and application
programmer in support of development, and there was *no one* moved there who
didn't go because of a better offer, or who didn't request a transfer. Unless
the person was a consummate goof-off, or an entire facility goes to hell, I
can't see that happening in that environment. Keep in mind that this is the
same company that has *never* laid anyone off, not even during the depression.

I have no illusions about IBM in the marketplace; I don't agree with or
condone what they do to their competitors and customers. But I would stack
them up against any other large company in terms of their consideration for
their employees. Again, I have no idea of your circumstances, where you
worked, what pissed you/them off, etc., and I really don't care to know.
But keep in mind that yours isn't the only experience with them.

Besides, read what I sent, eh? If you want to make jokes about a company
or anything else on the net, fine and dandy; I'll join you. But net.jokes
is not the place to vent one's spleen, at least not in the tacky manner
the original poster did. That is for net.flame, if anywhere. I would even
take exception to that if the subject had been CDC or Cybers!
