If you do not choose a LAT-server, you have also the possibility
of using a DMZ-32-Multiplexer. The DMZ-32 gives you 24 asynchronous
ports (RS232) with full modem control, but much better performance
than the old DZ11. The big advantage of the DMZ-32 is the fact that
the distribution panel with the 24 connectors can be as far as 1 mile
away from the VAX cabinet. There is only a 4-wire cable between the
controller module and the distribution panel. Every port can have a
speed

of up to 19.2 kilobaud, although the maximum throughput over the
4-wire-line ist about 72 kilobaud (if I remember correctly).
I suppose that the DMZ-32 is a cheaper offering then the LAT-server.
