Jefferys) writes about a problem with pagination when you write a document on a machine that is not attached to a LaserWriter. The problem is NOT related to the Macintosh XL. The problem is that the printable area of the page is slightly smaller on the LaserWriter than on the ImageWriter. The size that an application uses depends on the printer you have chosen with the Choose Printer DA. Solving the problem requires that you format the document for a LaserWriter. It is not as difficult a process as he described. First, you must have the LaserWriter printer driver (the file called LaserWriter) and the LaserWriter fonts on your system disk. As he mentioned, if you go into Choose Printer and select no printer, the system will assume the LaserWriter. (If you experiment, you will notice that if only the ImageWriter file is present, deselecting 'Imagewriter' dims the OK button; if both printer drivers are present, the OK button is enabled and clicking OK gets you the LaserWriter.) The next step is to select Page Setup from the menu. You should get the LaserWriter setup options. Click OK and your document should be reformatted for the LaserWriter. It is not necessary to go back to the Finder and startup the application again. The only inconvenient part of this process is realizing that selecting no printer in Choose Printer defaults to the LaserWriter (but only if its printer driver is on the disk). A related problem is that you may receive a document with a table of contents that was formatted on the Imagewriter. When you reformat, the page numbers will be wrong. In that case, print the document at about 95% reduction on the Laserwriter. Reduced printing increase the effective size of the printable page. -- Larry Rosenstein Apple Computer UUCP: {nsc, dual, voder, ios}!apple!lsr CSNET: lsr@Apple.CSNET
