I worked with Seymour Papert at MIT when I was at school there and have been out of touch with the field since. I think education is the most intesting aspect of ai. It is certainly basic (as is perception, representation of knowledge, etc), but it seems to be a little more relevent, and has tremendous potential for changing the world for the better. (I shudder when I think of how much time is spent by people in schools learning nothing).
