Well, if you really must ask...

The thing that distinguishes animals from humans (remember that long argument,
where the original argument-initiator went fishing right in the middle?)
is that humans can perceive their situation, analyze it extensively, and
then improve upon it.  This is one aspect of what we call "intelligence".

Now, if a female bird sees a male bird with red feathers on the front, and
thus considers him attractive, this doesn't require much intelligence.
If, however, she says "oh, but I remember how he built his nest out of
spaghetti, and then the first time it rained, everything fell out!
obviously, having a red front is not in itself a desirable attribute," then
this, I will say, is intelligence.
