ARPANET was created so that researchers could communicate with one another and share computing resources. DARPA funds MIT's access to the ARPANET for research, not so a science fiction writer of, shall we say, controversial talents, can have access. The "graduate student" in question should be commended for denying Mr. Pournelle access. I suspect that most of those in the computer science community have more than enough of Pournelle from his column in BYTE. This is born out be the abuse heaped on Pournelle while he was on the net.
