I see your point about the meaning of SO, however, I don't see where "Special Other" is much of an improvement. The word "Special" hardly denotes exclusivity. Just as we may have many significant people in our lives (can anybody be called insignificant?), we are likely to have a number of special people as well. What do you guys think of using "mate" or "partner", instead of "SO"? Frank Silbermann
