I use "" @ instead of "" \r.  If the called system has carrier detect 
strapped high or something, and connecting generated any garbage
characters, the @ will cancel them, and you won't get a "Password"
prompt, which occasionally saves a little time.  This works okay on all
the systems we talk to, anyway.
