Summary: You can stay friends with an XSO.

With regards to staying friends with an XSO, one of my closest friends today
was a SO in college 7 years ago. Happily, it was a relationship where we
both simply found we weren't getting what we needed together, so we were
able to back off and still remain close friends. Just 2 weeks ago, I had
the honor of being in the wedding party at her wedding (something I wouldn't
have missed for the world). Not all relationships end as calmly as this one
did, but it is certainly possible to remain friends after the breakup.
