I think it's username@[18.56.0.4] .  Of course, you can always telnet and
use SMTP manually (see the appropriate RFC) if all else fails.

Side note: The particular machine in question is on MIT's Project Athena
and should be addressed to username@MIT-ATHENA.ARPA (or .MIT.EDU)
