Although I usually have similar reservations about such events, I
was pleasantly surprised by the proposals made for using the money
collected.  If you had watched the program at all, you might have
noticed that the money was not intended to be used only for short
term projects, but that the need for long term solutions was
emphasised over and over.  Proposals included irrigation projects,
development of communication networks (roads), education, and so
on.   I agree with you that charity is usually a fad for most people
and I have my doubts about whether Live Aid will be able to accomplish
anything of any lasting value, but they are trying hard and seem to be
headed in the right direction.  They also seem to have been able to
raise enough money to be actually able to do something that might 
make a difference.
