We may not like war but one must remember it was war (whether 'hot' (ie.
actual fighting) or 'cold') that resulted in a great many of our
achievements - both scientific and technological (sp.). I may be mistaken,
but didn't the U.S.A. get into the space race in the first place because
the Russians put up Sputnik (sp.) ? If it wasn't for the cold war between
the U.S.A and U.S.S.R I doubt that we would have gone as far as fast as we
did. (for those who say 'so what ? why spend so much in space when you
could be feeding people ?' - just remember, the technologies developed are
being used to (for example) in medicine to keep people alive longer and
better (ie. higher quality).... and there are other reasons just as
important (to 'us') for continueing investing in space research.)

I must admit a 'hot' war now would sort-of wipe us (the human race) out,
But the cold war has fuelled a great deal of research and will continue to
fuel research, which can be also used for peaceful purposes. So I see
nothing wrong with war, just as long as it is cold (and, of course, just as
long as I don't have to fight in it :-))
