Actually, it's probably derived from the codpiece.  After all, aren't jocks
supposed to be more virile, masculine, manly, and WELL-ENDOWED than the
rest (notice I didn't say the "rest of us"? :^>~)?  And, have you ever
really looked at a dance belt?
