                Patrick Evan Savage b. 6/23/85

You have been with us such a little time,
Too short for us to know your personality,
         Your lusty little lungs announce
That Patrick Evan Savage claims reality.

Too early still to tease a smile,
I watch your sober scanning of this newborn world,
What are the data that you gather in,
Amass unsorted, random in a shapeless swirl?

Though I have often yearned for you
These waiting months when time was slow to creep,
Yet I could not imagine you the way you are,
Newly transplanted stranger in your crib asleep.

And just as well, for I could not have dared
To trust too much where hope had been in vain,
         Where earlier dreams' expanding flight
Had suddenly exploded, shattering into pain.

But now again, small focus of my care,
Alert and vigorous, soothe away alarms,
I feel my dreams take shape once more
And hold the future nestled in my arms.

May time and space not keep us far apart,
Give me the chance to help you till you're grown
And when at last I falter, leave you free,
Let me go with you when you walk alone.

                 Evan Kane 7/6/85
