He claims the 20 per cent improvement in resolution provided by Super-Beta is noticeable, but nothing to get excited about. It still isn't anywhere near the same league as LaserDisc n respect to picture quality. In additon, the sound quality on prerecorded tapes usually isn't as good as on LaserDisc because of the extra generations involved. SuperBeta increases the center frequency of the video FM signal by about 1 mHz, allowing for a bit more bandwidth in the Y channel. The I and Q signals are still hetrodyned to a low freqnency narrow bandpass channel. If you have a two piece VCR, you might be able to replace the tuner portion with one that received the MTS signals. It might also be possible to add MTS decoding to your present tuner. When the local PBS affiliate goes stereo, I plan to look into just such a conversion myself. From what I have read about MTS brodcasting standards, you might wish to listen to an MTS stereo broadcast before deciding to spend the money to decode them to stereo. -- Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX ...!tektronix!reed!omen!caf CIS:70715,131 Omen Technology Inc 17505-V NW Sauvie Island Road Portland OR 97231 Voice: 503-621-3406 Modem: 503-621-3746 (Hit CR's for speed detect) Home of Professional-YAM, the most powerful COMM program for the IBM PC
