Why this debate over independence vs. interdependence?  Surely it's a question
of scale.

You don't use libertarian principles on your spouse or babies.  Neither do
you take personal responsibility for your millions of compatriots.

Enlightenment-style democracy is a system for large, anonymous masses of
people.  It didn't exist until the standardization of language made such
masses possible.  And it won't exist after electronic communication makes
anonymity impossible.
