This was an early Arthur C. Clarke story. It was originally
published in ( of all things ) Boy's Life, the Boyscout magazine.
The story was later taken intact by Clarke, retitled and republished as
the title story in his short story collection 'The Wind From the Sun'.
It's probably gotten published elsewhere too, by now.
This is one of my favorites. A race between solar-wind powered
space craft, yachts on a race twice around the Earth, and then first
one to pass Lunar orbit is the winner. I'd almost prefer that to riding
the waves out to Catalina and back. But not quite.
