I've tried both vague and specific questions and it doesn't gain you much
either way. If you are vague you can always convince yourself "well, maybe
SOMEtime!" and if you are specific you can always convince yourself "darn,
if it weren't for that poor girl's relatives all dying off like that".

The two best responses I've got are: "Sure, but we go as friends. I'm not
interested in a relationship right now." And "I don't think my boyfriend
would approve." You bet it's blunt! But I knew right where I stood.

Bruised? Sure, I've gotten my share of bruises, and some of them seem to
take a long time to heal. But I think these kind of bruises are better
than the festering wound you get when that special person you've had your
eye on and pinned your hopes on finally gets up the nerve, after a month,
to tell you "I really don't think we have much of a chance. Why don't you
just forget it?" Then you can really demolish your self-esteem with a
quick flurry of "what if"s, "if only"s, and "everyone else"s.
