Summary:

This reminds me of an acquaintance by the name of Maxine who was working with
a largish computer company with offices aroung the world. She calls herself
Max and signs her e-mail the same way.
Apparently, when the company held a conference here, she met a fair number of
people that she had been conversing with over the years. From her telling, the
reaction tended to be something along the lines of:

double take followed by "*You're* Max??!?"

Just goes to show that even the most fundamental of assumptions can go awry
on the net.
