Sony CDU-1 CD ROM Drive Unit - Performance. Memory capacity: 540M bytes/disc Total number of blocks: 270K blocks/disc Data block size: 2K bytes (2,048 bytes)/block Data block rate: 75 blocks/sec Data Transfer Rate: 600K bytes/sec (max) 150K bytes/sec (sequential) Average Access Time: 50 msec (block to block) 1,500 msec (first to last block) Bit error rate: 10^-12 (after error correction) Physical Specs. Optical pickup: Semiconductor Laser (lamda = 7,800 A) Rotational speed: Approx. 200-530 rpm Motor start-up time: 1 sec. (Max) Usage: Horizontal only Indicator: Activity indicator on the front panel Operating temperature: 5C to 45C Power requirements: +12V, 112V DC, 1A (average) 2A (peak) +5V DC, 1A (average) Dimensions: Envelope (149W x 82.6H x 208D)mm Weight: 3 kg. There is an optional AC power adapter that supplies all the correct voltages. (AC-800 AC Power Adapter) Complete with descramble, sync detection, header check and error correction. No controller needed. Built in exactly the same size as a 5" floppdisk drive unit. The data base you have built up can readily be transformed into CD ROM's. You send 1/2" recorded tapes to Sony and they add all necessary subcodes and error correction codes as well as sync and header signals. Apparently these will be $300 in quantity.
