Many of the students exposed to unix do so under what I am told is legal duress wrt the privaged information. I have been told (not being a lawyer) that the courts have held that students can not be held to any agreements to protect such information due to the suress (they cannot get their degrees if they do not do the research requiring such access). The ethics are vague at this point for them.
