The easiest way to get file transfer mechanisms going to
new machines is to start with the public-domain MODEM/XMODEM/UMODEM
programs. There are widely available short "bootstrap" programs that can
be typed into a new system (or downloaded without error correction)
which can then be used to load the real programs. After you have
these going, I'd recommend switching over to one of the excellent
new KERMITs which are also freely available for just about
every machine under the sun. There are both user/server and
various automated versions, and they are very, very useful.

Distribution of KERMIT and the various (very complete) KERMIT docs
is coordinated through Columbia, and the docs, sources, and everything
else related to KERMIT can be obtained online. I recommend it
very highly.
