Maybe, instead of saying you have driven `without any ill side effects', you ought to say you have driven and been lucky. Even one glass of beer affects your reaction time. `A few' is that much worse. So you have thus far managed not to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, where you may have needed just a bit longer reaction time and didn't have it. Yes, I'd call getting stopped by the police (at the very least) or driving into another car or a pedestrian `ill side effects'.
