My preferred method of getting something started with an
attractive MOTOS is to: first, talk enough to get some idea
on whether she has compatible interests and values, then
say something like "Would you be interested in getting
together for lunch sometime soon?". This has a couple of
advantages: if she really wants to dodge, she can - by
saying something like "I never take a lunch break". That
type of answer to that vague a question can usually be
assumed to mean "no" unless it's followed up with a
counter-suggestion. Lunch together is a good way to get
to know somebody, because it's usually done in a public
place where nobody feels threatened, doesn't take more
than an hour unless you get really fascinated with each
other, and if worst comes to worst, you at least get lunch
out of your investment of an hour! Of course if you find
a mutual attraction you can plan to do dinner together a
few days later, etc. If you ask her out for an elaborate
evening to start with she's kind of on the spot, since she's
expected to spend a lot of time with somebody she doesn't
know yet.

While you're eating lunch, try to be open about yourself-
what your interests, values and goals are. Assuming you do
this properly, she'll probably reciprocate to some extent,
and you'll be able to figure out whether the two of you
will get along.

Good luck -- Walt Haas
