Just north of Niagara Falls Ontario (about 20 miles) if Niagara Falls is the epitome of garish and bright, then Niagara on the Lake (located where the mouuth of Niagara River opens onto Lake Ontario) is the best bets for quiet and culture. Hiagara-on-th-lake is the home of the Shaw festival. While originally meant to feature the works of George Bernard Shaw, the variety of plays has grown to provide a good collection. The Niagara gorge and park systym stretchs south from there to provide nice drives and a collection of historic and well preserved buildings and homes makes it very picturesque. Niagara on the lake used to be the seat of goverment of what was called Upper Canada in the early part of the 19th century. N of the L is also a preserve of artists, writers and sculpters. A restored tur of the century plus hotel called the Prince of Wales is nice, and there is one other I can't think of. The province of Ontario might have a travel office in Detroit, or there might be a number to call to get info mailed. Mike Upmalis (mupmalis@watarts)
