Message-ID: <1184@ukma.UUCP> Date: Wed, 6-Mar-85 23:06:09 EST Article-I.D.: ukma.1184 Posted: Wed Mar 6 23:06:09 1985 Date-Received: Fri, 8-Mar-85 03:24:59 EST Organization: Univ. of KY Mathematical Sciences Lines: 47 [ Bug salad ] I just spent 3 hours going through a uucp map that Mark Horton provided me, trying to get pathalias to compile the thing without error. With the raw map + the dead sites used by Peter Honeyman + a couple suggested by John Quarterman, I got almost 200 unreachable sites. These weren't caused by mapping out the sites suggested by Honey and Quarterman. These were plain incomplete information in the database. For instance. There is a bunch of machines with names like "wisc-ai". Looking in the data base I see that they are all part of "uwisc". But information isn't given on connecting to "uwisc". So all these machines are unreachable. The isreal machines are unreachable because a connection from decvax to their central node is mentioned at the isreal entry, but not at decvax. (This last error is rather common. It occurs for some HP sites, some Purdue sites, some Australian sites, and the Korean sites.) (Ideally) problems like this are isolated to the people who really care. The nearest neighbors to the problem. I don't need to know that hpda connects a group of machines to hplabs. I just know that I don't know a direct path to hpda, that hpda is in the hp subdomain, and that hplabs takes care of routing within hp. (I'm assuming an address of "user@hpda.hp.UUCP") I'm interested in providing to my users the ability to use the RFC 822 style addressing with domains, etc. I have sendmail. Surely I can make sendmail send mail to anywhere automagically. But a 2000+ site name space is too much for me to manage all by myself. And unless the name space is split up, I'll end up managing 2000+ sites. (sort of) The only question in my mind is if the current division is correct. -- :------------------------------------------------------------------: :- David Herron -: :- -: :- ARPA-> "ukma!david"@ANL-MCS or david%ukma.uucp@anl-mcs.arpa -: :- ARPA-> Or even anlams!ukma!david@ucbvax.arpa -: :- -: :- UUCP-> {ucbvax, unmvax, boulder, research}!anlams!ukma!david -: :- UUCP-> {mcvax!qtlon,vax135,mddc}!qusavx!ukma!david -: :- UUCP-> {A-Large-Portion-of-The-World}!cbosgd!ukma!david -: :------------------------------------------------------------------: "The home of poly-unsaturated thinking".
