 1) naming your dog is mostly just for fun. If another dog appears on the
scene, it can help you keep track of him, especially since you can C) an unknown
dog, find out whether it's yours, and abort the command. Also, your dog keeps
his name If you become a ghost, so when you see a named dog, or any named
animal, you are on a ghost level.

 2) I have never found a use for them, but I've also never managed to hit one
with an identify scroll. I usually assume they are blank, and useless.

 3) The scroll that makes you feel like someone is helping you is one of the
most important items in the game--the remove curse scroll. This will cancel
stickeycurses which you are under, and detatch the scroll of punishment's ball
and chain. (A stickeycurse is when you put something on, or wield it, and it
won't come off.)
 4) There are two kinds of whistles. The kind that makes a "high" sound is
just a whistle. If your dog is in hearing range, he will head towards you and
follow you for a while. (This may depend on his loyalty, which is built up by
feeding him.) The kind that makes a "strange" noise will teleport your dog to
you. If there are monsters in all adjacent squares, he will appear in a next-
to adjacent square and fight his way to you.

 5) scrolls: I am working on a bunch of hints files, but I am not sure I am
quite ready to send them out yet. Maybe soon.
