This is an old "shaggy dog" story, but I have never seen it
posted before so here goes.

It seems that there was this ancient kingdom located on the
shore of the Mediterranian. The principal industry of this
kingdom was the manufacture of purple dye from a certain
species of shellfish. As nobody else made this dye and it
was in high demand, the kingdom was quite prosperous. One
day, word came down that a large faraway country had invaded
a small, friendly neighboring country. The people of the
kingdom began to leave to go to the aid of this small country
and dye production started to drop off. The king decided that
he had to do something to keep his country from going
bankrupt so he posted guards at all of his borders with
orders to let nobody pass who had purple stains on their hands
(e.g. dye makers). The people managed to evade his blockade by
crossing the border at night and the country went broke anyway.
The moral to this story is:

OLD DYERS NEVER FADE, THEY JUST SOLDIER AWAY.
