Thanx for all the replies, guys!  They pointed me in the right direction.
It turns out that under 4.0 you can disable an account for all kinds of
process *types*, so I just set any ole password and enabled SYSTEM for
batch-only logins [like booting!!!].  It works fine, and there's no
way in hell you can log in from the outside unless you can create a
batch-type process.

4.0 security is *nutso*.  The Guide to System Security really had me
rolling on the floor at times.  You can make the whole machine go off like
a firehouse when someone types FOO.TXT...
