One reason EDT runs slow on certain terminals is that it uses AUTO-REPEAT
as a way to slow things down if the screen is behind the keyboard:

If you type stuff and the screen can't keep up, EDT turns off
AUTO-REPEAT on the terminal until the screen catches up.

This was really bad on VT101's where AUTO-REPEAT took 1/2 sec or so to turn
off or on. (Not bad on a VT100). Mabe the CIT-220 is just slow about
this particular feature compared to the VT220. DEC said (about 18 months
ago) that they would both fix EDT and the terminal firmware. By now (V4.0)
EDT may be fixed, and perhaps the vT220 is fixed (compared to the VT101).
