Boy, you ask tough questions don't you.  OK, lets start with categories first.
There is physical love (i.e. sex). There is loving someone, and there is being
in love.

Robert Heinlein had a definition for love in one of his books that I have found
useful from time to time:

 "Love is that condition where the happiness of another person is a necessary
  condition for your own happiness."

Chew on that for a while.
