I have now used 2 Sanyo machines for copying tapes, and I found that they
both act like VHS machines, in that they thread and unthread before and
after playing/recording.  Is this true of all their machines?  Do other
manufacturers do it as well?

It is unfortunate, because that is one thing that convinced me to buy
Beta -- it seemed it must be gentler on tape if it does not have to be
unthreaded for '>>' or '<<'.
