I think it was perfectly legal and probably ethical for the SS to purchase the 
list of names.  In this respect, they were acting just like any other vendor
that is trying to sell a service or product.  I think I would scream bloddy 
murder at the ice cream parlor for selling my name if it happened to me.  It
pisses me off when magazines do this.  I really appreciate the magazines that
now send me a form to be sent back asking if I would like to have my name on 
their "sold" list.  I may say yes all the time, but I'll stink if they don't
ask.
