I watch very little now, but usually these sorts of basic values are formed pretty early, and despite myself, I try to reach a goal which is realistically unattainable but which seems so casually attained in books, movies, etc. Is this healthy, even if the characterizations are "good"? Have any of you felt that you were being overly influenced by the media? Is the media effective in negatively reinforcing "bad" relationships? -- It's the damage that we do and never know, it's the words that we don't say that scare me so... Allyn Hardyck ..!ucbvax!allynh allynh@ucbvax.ARPA /* End of text from pbear:net.singles */ Well Allyn, I would have to say that the media is not doing so well at negatively re-enforcing bad relationships since it portrays bad/destructive relationships all over the evening soaps, so I think that they deserve a strike on that one. As for trying to strive unrealistic goals that are charecteristically(sic?) I can only say that I think that overall it is good, it develops maturity, etc. It also develops that sense of drive and ambition. But the one negative aspect would be that by setting the goals beyond your expectations is destructive. This is because there sill be many times when you realize that you can't attain the goal you set for yourself, so you get upset/angry/dazed/confused, etc. and this reaction deters you from trying to attain goals. I think it would be better to set goals that you know you can attain, but at the same time require that you strive your best to achieve them. I've been doing it for quite a while, and I can say that hey, you win some, and you lose some, but at least you come back trying. "Where the antelope and teddy bears play ..."
