The net loss to society is that violence is used to answer violence.  It
means that this method is more likely to be used in the future.  And
instant justice is no justice at all.

For the record, I'm don't admire Goetz, nor do I have great contempt for
him.  I think his actions are understandable, and perhaps they were almost
legal.  I certainly have little sympathy for the four criminals that he
shot.  However, I maintain that what he did was a mistake on his part, and
has unfortunate consequences for the rest of society.
