MSDOS is small. It is written in assembly language. It is quite possible to change it without sources (I've done it). Sure its a pain to disassemble the code, but it can be done. Unix is written in C. Its huge. You really cant disassemble it and hope to understand what is going on (that is the nature of compiler output). MSDOS is also a very different type of system. I can do things on MSDOS without ever touching its kernel that would require kernel changes on Unix.
