A fellow in East Berlin wanted very much to join his
family in the west. He found himself a nice, straight
pole about ten feet long and sanded it down as well as
he could. After dark one stormy night he located a
section of wall which wasn't quarded very carefully,
and ran towards it as fast as he could. Just as he
reached the wall he placed the pole into the earth and
pulled himself up, up and over the giant obstacle.
After landing and kissing the ground he had so longed
for, he rushed over to a bystander who had witnessed
the feat. The fellow looked in amazement at the new
citizen and asked him, "Are you a pole vaulter?"
The jumper replied, "No, I'm Norvegian. But how did
you know zat my name iss Valter?"
