I don't think that an attacker is too worried about the their attitude, or the potential harm to their own karma. I concede that people do think with a "gut reaction", in such circumstances but I hardly would call it an obstruction. The logic of the situation is: 1) I want to live. 2) I must maximize the avenues that allow me to live. 3) I will use what ever necessary to ensure points 1 and 2.
