I think the general comment that Woody Allen made is appropriate here too: "Relationships are like sharks, they have to keep moving forward or they die." Being separated creates lots of strains on a relationship above and beyond the normal wear and tear. It requires a lot of extra effort to keep it "moving forward", including lots of long-distance phone calls, letters and visits. All of my previous attempts to maintain long-distance relationships lasted as long as it took for both of us to realize that we were drifting apart, although I have maintained as much of a friendship as I could in each of these situations. Undaunted by previous failures (or perhaps oblivious), I am trying again. My current SO lives in Pittsburgh, 3.5 hrs drive away. We talk on the phone roughly every other night, and we get together about every other weekend and for special occasions. We went out together for a little more than a year before I moved, and its been almost a year since then. And most importantly, we are still growing closer. The sacrafices we make for each other enhance the trust we need that we won't fail. Hopefully, she will be finished with her Ph.D. by the end of the summer and will move in with me here. So I haven't given up hope that it is possible to keep a relationship alive across distance and time. Right now things are looking good for us.
