I wonder if this is related to the rather kinky 'comic strip' Perils
of Gwendoline, in which Gwendoline seems to spend most of her time being 
tied up in wierd restraints while wearing scanty garments?

Why inappropriate?  The book is full of comic relief.  It's one of the
things that makes it so good!  I recommend it (and the others in the
series) to any lover of fine fantasy.
