Yes, in a later game he did come back, still hastened.  Fortunately I
was able to slay him (sob! poor Barfy! I didn't want to do it!) before
he got me.

Now, I'm just waiting for the game where I have the wand of digging,
and manage to read a map scroll on a level with a leprechaun's
treasure room.  The wand of digging also works nicely for getting
out of shops without paying.

Any hints on training the dog?  I could look at the source code, but
that's cheating.
