We really don't know what the consequences will be for society yet, 
do we?  Perhaps if it will be the final straw that causes enough
outrage to tip the scales to really cracking down on these punks,
it will have a very beneficial effect, especially in NYC.  I notice
that all of them were multiple offenders, yet they were all still
loose on the streets harrassing people.  We can cry about the
poor kid that is now paralyzed, but if he had been in jail for
his previous offenses, he wouldn't have been in this mess.
