"Keep up appearances" ??!??!!?? didnt previous articles mumble something
about how they wanted your "friendship" and were afraid that total
honesty would burn whatever chances there were???

A little "disappointment" may be justified, but remember that *SOCIETY*
has a whole has minimum acceptance of homosexuality.
Unless he/she ALREADY knows you quite well, how are they to know that
*you* can take an honest answer without reacting in some adverse way???

I would say that *ANY* relationship should start with getting to be
friends (getting to know) by just "going around" together (or as they
say in the homeland "knocking about :-}")
You shouldnt consider it a "date" unless you have friendship first.
What happened to the good olde dayze when people just "hung around"
and then eventually made a formal "declaration of dating" to those
  observers around them??

Even if a person DOES know you quite well, years of conditioning by
...to be continued (we have a dumb mailer on this system)...
