I have a couple of comments to make about this, but I don't really have any opinions since it isn't my position to give any.... Certainly the people who are paying for the phone charges required to move the great volume of news around are justified in looking for ways to cut expenses. It would be better to have stargate than to drop usenet altogether. This is been a nice thing (unmoderated, that is), but I can certainly understand that lots of people may consider that it is being abused. But that's sort of human nature, isn't it? However, I must say that whether you call it moderation or censorship, the act remains the same. Someone else gets to decide whether or not my message is "OK". Even a benevolent dictator is a dictator, and some of the worst have started out with good intentions. So I can certainly see that there is cause for concern here, maybe not today, but tomorrow. So don't be so quick to say "it couldn't happen", because others have said the same thing in the past. I think what is necessary is that one side must stop beating its breast and protesting its innocence, and the other side must stop fomenting a revolt. This demands discussion, but lets try to keep our heads, eh? -- Roy J. Mongiovi. Office of Computing Services. User Services. Georgia Institute of Technology. Atlanta GA 30332.
