Like Ron Rizzo, I'm planning a trip to Italy this year - a week in
and around Florence (I'll be spending 2 other weeks elsewhere...).

I've just started reading about the area and can already recommend
"FlorenceWalks" (Holt, Rinehart & Winston - one of a series of
"...Walks" books including London, Jerusalem, Rome & Paris).

It has a concise review of the city's history, architecture,
surrounding countryside, accommodations, food, wine, places to visit,
art, transportation... and then suggests 4 walks through different
parts of the city, going into much greater detail about the streets,
buildings as you pass them. It's very easy to read - the writer
obviously knows the city inside out and keeps dropping little
asides about friendly waiters, great gelato hangouts, where to
haggle (and where NOT to haggle :-)).

I can recommend the LondonWalks book from personal experience, and
the Florence one seems to be up to the same standard.

 Ciao,
