One thing that I'm certain of is that flying arround So. Cal.
is MUCH faster than driving.  I won't argue right now that it 
is cheaper, but then some people's time is not worth as much as other's.

Anyone want to race from San Diego to LA or Santa Barbara or Palm Springs?
I'll even give you a 30 minute head start to give you time for one speeding 
ticket along the way!

Better yet, let's race from San Diego to Big Bear.... you can have an hour 
head start for that one.   Ever drive to Catalina? :*)

If you get unlucky and get the ticket, then flying might even be cheaper
without considering the time saved.  Time is one thing that you can't buy.
