I have been reading the net for about a month now and didn't follow
the Herpes issue concerning the kid until it ran up against a more
intimate side of my own life.

Here's the deal:
I have a friend that I have been going out with for some time now.
For the most part it has just been recreational (read "no sex") and
fun. One evening after making the rounds of a few clubs and such we
wound up back at her place and I decided to try to move the
relationship in a more intimate direction. It was at this point
that she informed me that she has genital herpes, hence the strictly
recreational relationship. She was interested in the physical side
of a relationship but thought it only fair to let me know what was
what. Being rather confused and unsure of how to act, I mellowed
out and we talked about it for a while without my coming to any
conclusions.

Not having been on the net for very long I don't know if this issue
has come up in this light before and so I beg your forgivness if it
is old hat to some of you. I back-pedaled and read all of the
herpes & kids articles that were still available to me and they left
me all the more confused. There are two kinds of herpes (as far as
i know). One kind that includes cancre sores, cold sores and sty's
(sties??) in the eyes. The other kind is genital herpes. The
first, herpes simplex one, is something that most everyone contracts
at one point or another, I am still subject to it occasionally; no
big deal. The other scares me. I intend to do some research on the
physical aspects, but would like to do some research on the cultural
aspects as well. I think the net would be a good place to start.

Therefore I am interested in what you think. Would you date, sleep
with, or attempt to carry on a serious relationship with someone
that has the disease? Do you have any direct experience with the
disease or someone who has it that you would be willing to share?
Do you have anything else to contribute on the subject?

I realize that this is a very touchy subject and I would rather you
reply through the mail if it means keeping your mouth shut out of
fear. If I recieve anything worthwhile I will post it and will
maintain confidentiallity.
