I must sympathize with anyone who feels that a rapist or, any other
person who actually committed a violent crime, ought to receive the
harshest possible punishment; furthermore, that in self-defense from
such a monster, practically any means of force are justifiable.

But by definition, MURDER is not justifiable. 

Perhaps what you meant was a fair trial, and, in the case of a guilty
verdict, a death sentence.

Without due course of law, we are certain to sink into vigilante-ism
of the sort not seen since the rape of the west, or since the heyday of
the Ku Klux Klan.

Surely you are not eager to give up one of the few basic rights that 
distinguish this nation from so many brutal places on this planet?
