It might be related to air pollution - the ozones and acids really
eat into plastic and rubber of all sorts.  The difference in lifetime
of plastic items in Los Angeles and San Diego is significant,
for instance!  And the internal air pollution from manufacturing
solvents, insulation, cleaning solutions, etc. is as bad or worse.
