My sincere apologies; I meant to post THIS file:

[Actually from Daniel Kian Mc Kiernan]

Some people don't seem to realize that there are previous generations of
dogs lurking in the hack-dungeon, and it is these previous dogs (not your
latest dog) which are attacking you (In your absence, they have been running
with a bad crowd). I begin my game by naming my dog (via the C command, quod
vide), choosing a different name each game. For example: My last dog was named
"Biff 19"; when I ran into Biff 9 (you can tell at a distance by again using
the C command), I knew to kill the son of a bitch.
To be fair: Sometimes your dog will go bad on you. I once left Biff
behind in going from one level to the next; realizing my mistake, I immediately
went back for him; either he had forgotten who I was, or he was outraged at my
negligence; in either event, he attacked.
("Biff", incidently is the name of my girlfriend's dog. For some of you,
it might be appropriate to simply use the names of your girlfriends. Sorry: I
just couldn't resist.)
My admiration to the clever chap who zapped his dog with a haste-monster
staff; I don't know that I would have thought of it. But it may be that the
dog will still be hastened when he shows-up in a future game, in which case:
Watch out!
Perhaps the pragmatic thing to do is to is to, whenever possible, kill
your dog when his usefullness has ended (If dead dogs aren't poisoned, you may
even want to emulate Amundsen); I find such ruthlessness personally
unacceptable (If there are ghost-dogs, it might also prove impractical).
