     The conductor of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra is Simon Jeffes.  They were
in NYC for the "Next Wave" Festival, a rather impressive and lengthy set of
performances in various media, including several Philip Glass operas, some
video pieces, and so on.  I suspect that PCO's success there will lead them to
put on a US tour within the year, but one can't tell -- it's incredibly
costly for UK/European groups to come over, esp. when they're large ensembles.
     By the way, Laurie Anderson did come to DC on her last tour -- as I recall,
she appeared at the DAR hall (the one where they wouldn't let Mahalia Jackson
sing in the fifties...).
