(They) do, most assuredly, update the diskettes.  If you are running
an application, chances are they don't NEED to be updated.  Compare
them to EJECT from the standard file save/load box.  They do exactly
as much updating (usually none).  In the finder, they work Identically
to selecting and ejecting a disk icon.
