I'm single, but recently took a lady-friend who's becoming an SO
up for a ride. She is, as she states it, a white-knuckle flyer,
even on the big stuff (it's the takeoffs and landings she
dislikes; once at cruise, no problem). We planned a tour of the
San Francisco Bay Area in the late afternoon, in 172.

A leisurely pre-flight, explaining what-all was what, helped calm
her. I worked hard on a very smooth takeoff, gentle turns, the
whole bit. The air was pretty smooth, and all went well. Until
returning to Palo Alto, that is -- it was just after sunset, and
they decided to report 2 3/4 miles visibility. Arrgh! No SVFR
after sunset unless IFR rated, current, and equipped! So, we
took it to San Jose (clear and 7), and I picked up the plane the
next morning. (And, yes, for all the skeptics, I got a good
briefing, the temp/dew-point spread was in good shape at
departure, and visibility at departure was 7-10 miles.)

Would you believe she's interested in flying again? Even with
all that junk in the first flight?
