Susan's departure from the TARDIS in that story was a difficult one, she loved the freedom fighter (His name has slipped my memory), but felt that she had to take care of her grandfather. The Doctor used the excuse of going into the TARDIS to repair a shoe, then, after some thought, closed and locked the doors. The closing scene was Susan's TARDIS key, which she had dropped. This was the first departure of a companion in the show's history.
