Hi Topher--Congratulations! Try the British Virgin Islands. My family spent
a week there one Christmas (actually all on Virgin Gorda). It's tranquil,
beautiful (hills, huge rocks, cactus, frequently-empty beaches) not too
expensive etc. Contact the Hotel & Tourist Board, Road Town, Tortola for
info. One thing you might consider would be to rent a villa, of which V. Gorda
has quite a lot, owned by Americans for the most part. July would be off
season, of course. I'm fairly sure that the place we stayed, the Lord Nelson
Inn, is now closed. You can fly to the BVI via San Juan.
Incidentally, Virgin Gorda means "the fat virgin", supposedly so named by
Columbus who thought it resembled a reclining plump lady. He'd been at sea
a long time.... -- John Purbrick
