My favorite editor for binary files used to be TECO. The version
I have runs on PDP-11 UNIXs but may well run on VAX's using emulation mode.
It is great for editing binary files of any length and contents. I often
use it to change strings in binary copies of programs.
I believe many versions of EMACS for the VAX also work acceptably
for editing binary files.
