Several readers responded to my last article about disconnecting the
shift light on the 1984 Ford tempo/Merc. Topaz. Here is some
additional info :
One person found a switch on the transmission, disconnected it,
but the light still worked. I suspect that he found the backup
light switch instead. To help locate the correct switch, try
to locate the switch mounted on the lower /rear part of the
transmission. To verify that you have located the right switch,
shift the transmission into 5th gear (engine OFF please!!).
If you have the right switch, then a tab on the transmission
linkage should be pressing on the switch (only in 5th gear)
thereby breaking the circuit to the shift light. You will have
to get a good bit of your body under the car to find the switch.

I did try to mail this info directly, but it never got there, so
I am posting it to the entire network. My apologies to the rest of
the network.
