I would hope that NYU is as enlightened a place as you say, but I doubt it.
I'm not accusing you or the group you are in, but sexist actions are not
always as overt as whistling on the street and patting them on the fanny.
How about:
o The dean of a school that hires only good looking secretaries so he
    has something to look at?

o Profressors that trade sexual favors for grades (or worse, trade them
    and renege)

o The recent case of a woman at UT Austin that was denied tenure-- in
ways that suspiciously look like the REAL reason was that she was
female (this is possibly going to the courts, so a lot of information
    is not readily available).

o the general case that a woman has to work harder, publish more, and
generally outperform a man to get tenure-- only to find it much harder
to get promoted and get paid less.

Schools aren't the only place that practices sexism, of course. I had a
dear friend who spent two years in jeans at her work because every time she
dressed up someone decided she was a secretary and asked her to make
coffee-- this was when she was chairing the meeting they were in, no less.

sigh.

I think the sexist attitudes of a lot of this country are all very nicely
summed up by Garry Trudeau, in one of the questions he had a law school ask
Joanie Caucus:

If female, why should we allow you into this school when you would
probably waste this education by going off and getting married anyway?
(paraphrase, the reference is at my other terminal...)
