Another fan of Lawrence Block here, with notice of his latest short story
collection, _Like A Lamb to Slaughter_, nineteen finely crafted sketches from
seven to twenty-three pages in length. There are two Martin Ehrengraf
(the attorney whose clients are always innocent) stories; a Matt Scudder;
a Chip Harrison (an Archie Goodwin to Leo Haig, a parodised Nero Wolfe);
and of the rest, some sardonic, a few chilling enough to be worthy of
Harlan Ellison. Although Block writes mainly within the mystery genre,
the man is first and foremost an old-fashioned storyteller. Anyone considering
reading him should dip into this collection for a sample of his talents.
