The joke that follows, and many other "Father Goose" stories that have been
popping up lately, are found in Bennet Cerf's _Treasury of Puns_.

A young boy growing up in England was very excited because his Uncle Alfred
was coming to visit him from America. Alfred was a great sports fan, and
the nephew could count on getting a new cricket bat, or a polo stick whenever
he visited.

When the day arrived, he waited impatiently at the door, hoping to see his
uncle. However, they got a letter with the second mail delivery, saying
that the uncle had stopped over in Wimbleton. The boy burst into tears,
whereupon his mother comforted him with,

"There, there; you know Alfred lauds tennis, son."
