My 78 toyota celica (77k miles) acted like its choke was
sticking so as a short fix I added some carb cleaner. This is the
stuff you pour in the tank and it is supposed to clean the carbs
as you drive. Anyway, the result was the the car seemed to perform
a whole lot better. The car has always worked better on the highest
octane gas I could get. With the carb cleaner it seemed to
accelerate better without hesitation or knock. I also
have a 1964 sedan (4450 pounds with 6.25 liter V8) that marginally
runs great on 92 octane. If I use Texaco 93 octane then I only
get a little knock when I stomp on it. I poured the carb cleaner
in it too, and it also seems to run better.

My question is this, Is it just my imagination or does
carb cleaner really increase the octane rating. If it does then
why not use this instead of the more expensive octane boosters
available.
