For communication and file transfers using modems, I recommend kermit,
a program which exists for almost every computer in use today. It is from
Columbia University and is public domain software. There is a version
for RT11, RSX-11M, and RSTS. To download it requires the downloading
(by listing) of a simple fortran program and the kermit hex files. The
fortran program is then used to convert the kermit hex files into a
binary file with error checking done on the hex.
