They are just trying to be polite. And in my case, I do not go around informing everyone I am Jewish. I have been wished "Merry Christmas" by non-Christian Japanese who just thought it was an appropriate greeting for this time of the year. For over 97% of the people she was right. This is part of being in galut, and we happen to live in a basically Christian country.
