I rather like Walter Piston's _Harmony_.  I haven't found anything
comparable to it in terms of harmonization.  One could use a good
appreciation text for the very basics (notation and form).  Check
out what the local college is using as texts for its intro musik-
for-non-musik-majors courses (appreciation and theory).
