The 3COM Ethernet board works reliably on PC/XTs and PC ATs. At my previous
job, we had a bunch of PCs on thin ethernet attached to a thick ethernet
(through a barrel connector) with a Vax on it. Works fine. Unfortunately,
we were only using a locally hacked up protocol totally unlike TCP.

The current release of PC/IX (1.0) has small model code space both in the
kernel and in user programs, and there isn't much kernel code space left.
The new version (1.1) which IBM is supposed to ship real soon now has a
medium model kernel and would be more amenable to large injections of
TCP code.

PS: The 3COM boards have mediocre throughput because they only have a
single packet buffer. But at least they work and they're not too expensive.
