As for automatics, I can do anything with my Volvo automatic you mention except get my clutch wet. Contrary to popular misconception, automatics can shift down and run on compression just like sticks. That is the reason they say, 1 - 2 - 3 - R, so you can lock it in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd as well as reverse. And I don't have to ride the clutch. Sticks are a lot more fun to drive in good weather though.
