It is possible to convert a big, complex book into a movie, but it
requires a level of skill that is rarely seen today. As an example, I
suggest the 1947 film, "Great Expectations". A complex story with an
enormous number of details is told in 2.5 hours, but there is never a
moment of confusion. I've seen it on late-night TV a couple times, so
keep an eye out for it.

In general, I think the English movie industry in its golden age is
unrivaled in technical quality. It went bankrupt, but the talent is
still used by Hollywood producers a today.
