The idea (at least in part) was to use variable radix expansions, i.e. to express a number not in 10th's, hundreth's, etc., but instead as some number of 1/(2!)'s, some number of 1/(3!)'s, etc. In this form, e = 1.1111111111111... etc. I can't remember what one did from there...
