I've never tried wiscvm.ARPA, I suppose that >wiscvm.ARPA is intended as a gateway between CSNET and BITNET, not for >UUCP use. ***** host names which are ENTIRELY IN CAPS without domains ***** are BITNET hosts (i.e., CUNYVM, WISCVM, etc.) Wonderful. So use of wiscvm.ARPA from UUCP to send BITmail isn't legal. Perhaps someone should tell this to some BITNET sites, which do some funky things to mail *unless the user is very knowledgeable about how mail gets sent.* At the last BITNET site I worked at, they sent mail thru CUNYVM to ucb-vax.ARPA (actually UCBJADE) for a while. Now that site routes its internet mail to SMTPUSER@WISCVMwhich conveniently forwards mail with the UUCP domain to csnet-relay.ARPA which forwards this UUCP mail to ucbvax.UUCP. (BTW, the user can avoid this by knowing all about BSMTP, creating the appropriate BSMTP header which SMTPUSER@WISCVM can handle, attaching the mail message to the bottom of all that, and using SENDFILE to send (NOT MAIL) this conglomeration of stuff to SMTPUSER@WISCVM ... I imagine that a similar mail server works at UCBJADE and PSUVAX1) And, as I mentioned earlier, all this happiness is usually invisible to the person on the BITNET end mailing ... they usually mail to bozo%bozovax.UUCP@internet or bozo%bozovax.UUCP@csnet-relay Now wasn't that confusing? It gets even worse, though. Some BITNET sites haven't taken advantage of these internet gateways at all, and have no idea what to do when mailing to the internet. And y'all thought UUCP was confusing ... :-) -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Henry C.
