Actually, not necessarily.  There have been cases where company X did
silly-and-pointless-but-spiffy-looking thing Y, and everybody else
recognized the stupidity of the idea and ignored it.  You don't see
many Intel 432 clones around, despite an incredible amount of hype at
the time about how it was the obvious next step in machines.
