It's a tendency I've noticed in many of the women I've known, and one that has a lot of subtle reinforement from our culture. It may be a dark and nasty thing, but I think there is a definite tendancy for women to be self-deprecating, even to the point of inviting hurt to themselves. The myth here is the claim that there is something natural about this, or that masochistic women need to stay that way.
