Summary:

The problem of paper crumpling has to do with the degradation of a rubber
roller (known as the 'paper separation roller'). The degradation is caused by
the pre-mix getting on the rubber itself. There is a (cellophane?) belt that
rides on the roller, and when the rubber gets soft, it causes a groove to form
in the roller. This causes an overall decrease in the diameter of the roller
so that the roller and the surface of the drum do not move exactly in sync,
causing the paper to crumple.

The life of this roller can be substantially increased by moving it about 4mm
away from the drum.
