TEInit. I had neglected to initialize TE (because I looked in the index under Init to check if I had all the important init routines in my program; TEInit is under "T", of course). This is why the SFPutFile was failing: TEInit was being done by the finder but not by the system if my application is set as the startup. Live and Learn; Learn to Live. -Eric.
