According to the  usual  tome of reference  for Rogue hacks (the AD&D Dungeon 
Master's Guide  et al), plate mail and plate armour are different, armour having one  ac. better than mail.
	Armour is also rather more expensive, being 1500 gps at least. Mail should be 400.
You could  also read your terminal's  manual, to find out where the shift key is hiding.
