One day a man was walking through a restaurant when he noticed
a reception that had a banner proclaiming "Congratulations
Mr. and Mrs. Brown on your 65th Wedding Anniversary". Since it's not
often (especially in this day and age) that anyone stays married
very long, he was very touched and took it upon himself to find
the lucky Mr. Brown and congratulate him personally for taking the
trouble to make the marriage work for that long of a time.
Mr. Brown looked down at the floor and began to weep. "Why,
what's wrong?", asked the man. "Well, let me tell you a story.",
said Mr. Brown. "When my wife and I had been married for just 15
years, I hated my wife so much that I almost shot her! But what made
me hold back was the thought that they'd throw me in jail for fifty
years."
"But why are you crying ... you should be glad that things worked
out so well!"
"But if I had shot her, I'd be a free man today!"
