Unfortunately all this discussion of what effect Roger Craig's
coaching will have on Walt Terrell is speculative because Craig has
retired to Alpine, California despite being offered a contract that would
have made him the highest paid coach in baseball. Apparently Craig wants
to spend more time at home near his grandchildren. A double whammy
because batting coach Gates Brown quit in disgust when the Tigers offered
him only a modest (~10%) increase while dangling the big bucks in front
of Craig. There was considerable speculation in the San Diego press that
Craig might replace fired Padre coach Norm Sherry but Dick Williams went
with his old Expo pitching coach.
