The joke went something like this:

There was this kingdom with the usual king and the usual complement of
knights. One of the knights was a very short guy, who was nevertheless a
fairly capable guy, and so he was kept around anyway, though they had to
go to all the trouble of finding him a short pony.

One day, the kingdom was attacked, and the knights all set out to war.
Which was when our little knight found that his pony couldn't make it.
Anyway, all the other knights rode off, while this guy started a pony
hunt, which, alas, was futile. In desperation, he asked the king for any
large animal, even a dog. The king reluctantly agreed, and they went
around hunting for a dog big enough for this guy to ride. Finally, the
servants came back with a huge shaggy dog (no pun intended!!!), but the
king took one look and shook his head. He said,

So now you can rest easy, knowing the body of the joke.
