Summary:

Last year at this time, I bought a Sunpak 444D flash unit.
It has a thyristor device which controls the exposure by
measuring the light reflected from the subject, and comes
with an interchangable base to allow it to work with the
popular camera brands. My camera is a Nikon FM (strictly
manual); my roommate's is a Canon A-1. We bought the same
flash with different base units. Total cost: about $60
at a Caldor's (large, general discount store) in
Massachusetts.

Consider Sunpak. It's a top quality flash, and will cost
you less than Minolta, Vivitar, Nikon, etc. (many of whom
just put their brand name on Sunpak flashes).
