Resisting the impulse to respond to this with something rash, I'll just say
that, other things being equal, you can learn better with better equipment.
Many biologists doing serious biology require tools not found in the usual
kitchen, like excellent microscopes.  There is a quantum difference between
the microscopes used for real biology and the kind found in kitchens (or the
moral equivalent of kitchens :-); for instance, the ability to do Nomarski
differential interference contrast imaging.  The analogy with computers I
leave as an exercise for the reader.
