As far as I can see, your problem is one of cabling.  Since when is a 1650
receive only?  Run another cable with both TX & RX lines.  Seems to work every
time for me.  Another Kludgy-type fix might be to do waits after carraige 
returns and cut your poor, sick diablo a break.  As I remember, Diablo 1650's
require all those soon-to-be obsolete signals like RTS & CTS and DTR & DSR.

We have had a diablo 1650 running at 1200 baud for a long while on our
Gould machine, so you should have no problem without the flakey Gould
Asynchs....
