An interesting concept; that relationships and start-up companies
don't mix.
From my experience there is some validity to this concept. I
started work at Convex (a start-up) two years ago. I met my current SO two
months after starting work here. During the initial stages of the
relationship, there was another man in the competition. This was good
from a work standpoint, but bad from a morale (mine) standpoint. The act
of balancing the need to work 70-80 hours a week with the desire to spend
time with her was very difficult indeed. It is true that one of the major
sources of friction (other than the existance of the other man), was my
working hours. Much effort was expended on my part trying to express my
feelings for her, while explaining the need to be at work all of the time.
In the final analysis, much, much credit goes to her for her acceptance of my
work situation, and the special time requirements it entails.
I think it is difficult for a relationship to thrive when there is
another "entity" which draws so much resources from one of the people in the
relationship. Usually, a partner expects to be the #1 priority in their SO's
life. To have to share that spot with a start-up company is very difficult
indeed. Many thanks to mine for her perserverance (are you reading this cc??).
At any rate, our relationship has somehow survived. The other man
left the picture about a year ago, and my SO and I are closer now than ever
before. So, although it is difficult, there is hope that romance and a
start-up can coexist in your life.
