You must be using the generic kermit which modifies the iobyte to
look for modem input.  The documentation makes clear that this won't
always work, so you must modify the source of kermit so that it reads
the port directly.  I assume the source contains settable switches
to make this easy to do, although I haven't looked at it lately.
