There is a book out titled A GUIDE TO PROGRAMMING THE IBM
PERSONAL COMPUTER by Bruce Presley. The book is well thought out
for a beginner, starting with simple topics (like how to print
something) and then moves to more advanced topics (like files).
The progression is easy and it does not throw a lot of things
at you in the beginning (or even later).

The book is not 'cutesy' like many introductory texts. It
has lots of good clear examples (I like examples!). I think you
can find the book in most book stores (its an 8-1/2 x 11 with a black
cover). The book also has homework problems (with solutions in the
back) and covers a little bit of structured programming. I recommend
it highly.

P.S. I believe that there are a couple other A GUIDE TO... books by
Presley out for the Apple, TRS-80, and Commodore computers.
