They played (and defeated) Maryland, so this year's Sun Bowl is a rematch. Actually, Tennessee and Maryland have played four times in the past 10 years. In 1974 they played Maryland in the Liberty Bowl (winning by something like 7 to 6 on a last minute touchdown pass), and then followed up by opening the 1975 season against them (as I recall, Tennessee won that game too). Looks like more than a coincidence to me... As a long-time Tenenssee fan, and twice graduate of U.T., I am obligated to add "GO VOLS!" and hope they hang tough for the Sun Bowl (they probably will be a 7 point underdog, particularly if they lose to Vanderbilt this weekend - perish the thought). The bowl game is more important this year, since it looks like a long, sad basketball season coming up for the Big Orange. Besides, Johnny Majors is in about the 7th year of his 4 year rebuilding program, and the pressure is on. * * David Bryant AT&T Bell Laboratories * Columbus, OH 43213 * (614) 860-4516 * . : djb@cbosgd.UUCP cbosgd!djb@Berkeley.ARPA * * ps: I wouldn't be surprised to find that the SEC has sent seven teams to bowls several times, and perhaps even as many as eight. I don't have the data to confirm this, but would be interested in finding it somewhere...
