Whatever else you do, DON'T recharge alkaline batteries! They can explode
during the charging process. Listen to the warnings on the batteries
which say do not recharge.
I have heard varying reports about recharging carbon-zinc batteries.
Even if they take a charge, don't expect it to last more than a few days,
since recharged carbon-zinc cells tend to discharge themselves quite rapidly.
Also, the leakage guarantees on name brand carbon-zinc and alkaline cells are
void if they are recharged.
I would not recommend recharging lithium batteries either.
If you re going to recharge bateries, stick to types (like ni-cad and lead-acid
that are designed to be recharged, and observe safety precautions, especially
with lead-acid batteries, which giff off flammable hydrogen gas when charged,
Remember the Hindenburg!).
