A friend pointed out to me that I may have been confused over which
compatibility mode had been by the original author.  He may have
meant the PDP-11 compatibility mode when I was thinking of the 
4.1BSD compatibility mode.

We have used both here.  The 4.1 mode got used for Macsyma.  The 
PDP-11 mode got used for chess(6), zork, and a modula compiler which
produces only pdp-11 code.

My only excuse is that it was 3:00 am and I was in the middle of catching
up on 4 or 5 days of news.
