I vote against a separate news group for X-C.

Not only is there not enough traffic to warrent this, but I know that
both Alpine and Nordic skiers would learn from one another. In the end,
the principles for nordic skiing are no different that downhill skiing.

On thing I have learned thru the years is that most Nordic skiers really
don't know how to ski.  They try to snowplow on unpacked slopes [impossible];
they stay in tracks (grooves) when going down a hill into the inevitable tree;
they think telemarking is hard (it's not, I teach it as the first turn,
correction third after a simple step turn and a kick turn). The guy who
taught me how to X-C ski didn't know himself at the time (he's a world
class hang glider pilot now). I had to relearn to ski myself in Utah
where the hills are steep.

For now, I long to just see general discussion on the topic. As far as
visiting distant places: I forward ski condition reports to friends at the
IBM Research Lab in San Jose. I use some of the reports myself to visit
areas. I highly appreciate your time an effort to post conditions.
