Nope, they keep them in a pen and feed them powdered (whole) milk, this is
called (I believe) 'Dutch process Veal' as opposed to real Veal which is 
unweaned calf (and is MUCH MUCH better than any substitute).

On the subject of veal, WHY can't we get good lamb here?  The only stuff that we
seem to get is young mutton, not lamb.  I didn't know what we were missing until
I was in England this summer and had some REAL lamb (YUMMY stuff that).

   Way back when (in the 70's) a favorite flame of the Granola/natural-food/
'ecology'<-NOTE the quotes>/vegitarian-is-better freaks was the fact that it
takes about 20 acre/years of land use to feed one steer to market weight
('This land is being wasted, lets plant it in soybeans/lentels/rice').
One thing that they missed is that the land used for grazing is almost
useless for farming (poor soil, low rainfall, &tc, &tc).
I would agree that Feedlot fattening is an inefficent use of resources.
