What you fail to mention is that 'you suddenly feel weak' indicates the wraith has taken you down a level. Assuming he only takes you down once then when you kill him you will be back at the same level you started from. I had the impression (in 3.6 at least) that you were given just enough experience points to advance to the next level. That means if you were at level 14, almost level 15, and the wraith took you down to 13, when you kill him you'll be at 14 but near the bottom not the top of 14. In any case there is no advantage to letting them hit you and going down a level. -- I'm not a programmer, I'm a hardware type.
