I went to an Intro. to AI seminar, and the speaker recommended
three books for novices to start with. All are published by
Addison-Wesley, and I think that two are in 2nd edition.

LISP by P. H. Winston and B. K P. Horn (2nd ed is on Common Lisp)
Aritificial Intelligence by P. H. Winston (&?)
Building Expert Systems by F. Hayes-Roth

I haven't started reading them yet - I'd welcome comments as to
whether these are the right place for a novice to start to gain
a *general* understanding. --henry schaffer n c state univ
