If your modem gets zaped by glitches, check that protector block where the
telephone line comes in is properly grounded and that the carbon blocks are
in good shape.  Inspect the blocks by removing the two bolts on the
protector that appear to do nothing.

After having lost two modems to lightning this way, I found that the Telco
did not ground the protector when my phone line was installed. Ameritech did
reimburse me (after a bit of a delay) for the modem repair charges.
