From the Dec. 3, 1984 Aviation Week & Space Technology:
Notice of Proposed rule Making that would give formal
approval for the operation of personal computers and elec-
tronic games by airline passengers is expected to be published
within about 90 days by the FAA.
The proposed action would add computers and electronic games
to other authorized devices, such as pacemakers and electronic
hand-calculators, already approved for use under FAR 91.19.
Until this change in the FARs occurs, the use of personal
computers in flight is left to the discretion of the air
carrier or the flight crew.
...more follows about how they tested and found no evidence
of interference.
