The method works, its simple, and it increased my understanding of the mac. Ward (hao) and others suggested "save as" from the file menu. This works, as does "close" followed by "open" or "new". The disadvantage of these techniques is disk swapping. Mousing up the "save as" selection from the file menu is easy. Then the reaper arrives - thirteen disk insertions stand between you and your terminal session. (elapsed time: 2 minutes and change). Is this process less onerous on a Fattie? Although Hitchens technique is less obvious (more of a unix style interface) its preferable for me because of the greatly reduced number of disk insertions. Thanks again to everyone who replied.
