I have a 1976 Pontiac Le Mans and as far as I know the filter was never changed. When I upgraded from a two barrel to a four barrel, I rebuilt the two barrel.
The filter showed no sign of residue of any kind aftre 74,000 miles. And I am
sure that no attempt was made to buy any special gas. The problem must be one
local to some gas stations. All it takes is one really dirty tank of gas and
that little filter is shot.
