Aha.  Maybe we're onto something here.  Perhaps women are attracted to such
men for their "good" qualities (excitement or whatever) and hope that, this
time, the "bad" qualities will not be present.  At the same time, another
man who understands that a certain set of "good" and "bad" qualities almost
always occur together, sees the woman going with this man and can't understand
why she seems to prefer this "jerk".

So perhaps some of the effect is just a difference in perspective.
