I still believe strongly that American cars are superior > to foreign cars in terms of comfort, safety, and D-I-Yability(can you yourself > drop a reconditioned Hemi in your Izusu? :-) ) However, I would also like to > state that Volvos come close... One more reply for the Boat People: (1) Comfort is subjective; my back aches after a long trip sitting on a bench seat! Try a sitting in a Europeann seat... (2) Safety has been greatly discussed in this newsgroup. Let me sum up by saying that the U.S. cars are likely to suffer less damage in an accident, but imports will protect the occupants to a greater extent. Active safety is also a strong point for imports --- it's much easier making an evasive maneuver (sp?) in a BMW than in a Lincoln Continental... (3) D-I-Yability? If you mean the ability to do get parts and do extensive mods to your car and engine, you're still wrong. Take a look at the variety of VW equipment available, with the number of suppliers, as well as the audience. There are right now five (!) VW magazines around: Hot VWs, VW Trends, VW & Porsche, VW Action and VW Classics. I don't think Hemi drivers can beat that! And can you pull out and re-install a Hemi within ten minutes (the record for VW engine pull & replacement is about 7 minutes --- even I can do it in about minutes.)? But, to each his own...
