I was wondering what features most people would like to see in a 1200 baud
modem which would not be expensive to implement. Any comments on the
following:

1. I figure that any new modem should implement at least a subset of the
cxommands of a Hayes SmartModem. Does anyone want to speculate what
subset should be implemented. Do you know of any command(s) that are
very useful/useless.

2. Do any of you know of any additional commands that should be
implemented on a new modem. Would implementing a superset of the Hayes
commands cause any problems with modem software out there. What about
storing several numbers, a login sequence etc.

3. Is it worthwhile to implement some form of security on the modem
itself to screen incoming calls? Something like a password that has to
be entered failing which the connection will be broken.

4. What switches/LEDs on a modem are absolutely necessary and what are
of doubtful utility. Also does size really matter.

5. Is it worthwhile/possible for one modem to follow both Bell and
CCITT standards?

6. Is it desirable to make a modem both synchronous and asycnchronous.

7. Does anyone know anything about the error-rate found proctically on
various 1200 baud chip sets out in the market.

I invite all speculation. If you have any special reason to think a
certain way please tell me about it. Also if you have any other
comments about 1200 baud modem design please tell me about them.

							Thanks.
