I have not tried this, but I have on good authority that Microsoft Word can be  patched so that it will not initialize the Epson FX-80 when it signs on, as 
follows:  Use DEBUG to change bytes 92A and 92B in (a copy of) the file
EPSONFX.PRD to nulls.  Otherwise they contain the hex equivalents of @
(1B, 40h), which is the Epson reset string.  I have also heard tha attempts to
print certain ASCII characters will cause MS-Word to bomb, namely 170-173, and  perhaps those in the 160's.  Also I am told that no matter how ASCII 196 is
defined, MS-Word prints the character defined for ASCII 45 (dash).  Good luck!
