I bought a Promethus(sp?) Premodem 1200 (the standalone version) and
installed it in a friends system. It has been quite reliable, both in
operation and in Signal / Noise ratio. (Their phones are handled by
GTE, you know the guys that think a SNR of 6Db is good.) It has been
steadily coming down in price so it will probably be under $300 by Xmas.
The one I got doesn't seem to go very loud on the speaker. I don't
know if that is a fault or if I haven't set one of the zillion of
options correctly. The documentation was complete if somewhat sparse.
I set it up for Hayes mode so I could use PC-Talk.
