Maybe things are different at some other schools across the country, but here
at the University of Illinois, a surprisingly small percentage of the students
who go to the football games are actually football fans (my opinion). The rest
come for the bands, the social atmosphere, or just as an excuse to get drunk in
the afternoon. The security personnel have had to become more and more like
storm troopers at the stadium. In short, it's becoming less and less of an
opportunity to go out and enjoy a football game. In some senses, the probation
put on this school may have been a blessing in disguise. Then again, it may
not have helped. I am seriously considering not renewing my tickets next
year, despite the fact that we'll be beginning a home-and-home with Nebraska
and USC.
