I know that I was somewhat disappointed with HSB last years; plots seemed
predictable, performances were lackluster... much of the shine I used to
remember was missing.

Well, after about three shows, I think I can safely say that things are
*all right* on the hill...  the writing (and characters) are very vivid.  In
both of the last two episodes, there have been at least three scenes where I
was chuckling, and each has ended with a 'kicker' (the execution, the
rookies' party) which really got to me.  Looks like Bocho & company's
attention is back to the right show...
