The penalty for mispelling can be quite severe. Just try mispelling a few words on your resume and see how many job offers you get. Try the same thing in a letter to a prospective buyer and how many sales you make. I'm all for spelling reform. I use 'thru' for 'through' quite often, but never in an important document.
