IEEE-488 is informally known as a parallel RS-232.  There is at least
one manufacturer of a RS-232 to IEEE-488 converter (I do have
literature around here somewhere).  There are also IEEE-422 boards to
plug into a UNIBUS, QBUS, MULTIBUS, ...
