The key to the last scene of "Places in the Heart" is the title. The scene
indicates that there is a "place in the heart" where all of the characters,
some dead, some gone away, are together in peace and harmony. This
interpretation (which is not mine, but fits closely with my interpretation
of the scene) has been presented to Robert Benton, the director, who agreed
with it, so I guess it's more or less what was intended.
