A lot depends on how well the lyrics are integrated with the tune, but great stand-alone lyrics can be found on almost any Jim Steinman song. "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" is my favorite. As I think about it, I realize that my favorite lyrics always involve musical "stories" that have plot, characterization, etc. Examples of fine musical stories include: Almost anything by Harry Chapin (e.g. "WOLD," "Cat's in the Cradle," and that unknown classic about Man's Drive For Perfection, "Six-string Orchestra") The Coasters' "Along Came Jones" Much of Gordon Lightfoot (e.g. "Don Quixote" and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald") Rob Mitchell {allegra,ihnp4}!hogpd!jrrt "Any clod can have the facts but having opinions is an *art.*" - Charles McCabe
