Obviously this was no great insight......I won't even try to explain how
I used to use it....

I still stand by my claim that AT LEAST the enchant weapon scroll will say
"You feel a strange sense of loss" when you read it without a weapon in
your hand. I still cannot say for sure that the enchant/protect armor
scrolls do the same, but I have a feeling that they do. I'm using version 5.3 .
