According to the Oct 3 WSJ, as definitive a
source as I'm likely to find,

"A joint venture of CBS Inc. and Sony last week opened the first
compact disk custom-pressing plant in the U.S. The plant's initial
capacity will be 300,000 disks a month but will double as demand requires."

These guys do their homework much better then most sources, so I consider
this highly reliable.

Other quotes:

"More tha 1200 compact disk titles are available, up from 650 last
year; in 1985 more than 2000 will be on the market, says
Emiel Petrone, head of cmpact disk marketing for Polygram."

"In august, 24% of our volume was compact disks", says Arthur SHulman,
the store's [Laury's Discount Records/Chicago] director. "Eighteen months
ago, the business didn't exist."

"Sony Corp. yesterday introduced the first portable compact disk player -
similar in concept to Sony's popular Walkman tape player - complete with
headphones and battery pack. The player, which will retail for about $300,
measures 5 by 5 1/4 inches and will be in stores next month. Sony is also
preparing to ship car-stereo versions of the disk players."
