Do be careful with blanket statements like "he won't understand because
he is male".  He may not understand, but suggesting a sex-linked
causality is a very strong deterrent to further conversation or attempts
at understanding.  I might believe that a person's attitudes were typical
of (most/many) males, but I'd hope that wouldn't prevent understanding.

Don't be too hasty to say that there is no code of appearance for males.
Perhaps the reason you see more "Manhattenization" of women in
advertising is that it isn't "masculine" for males to talk about their
appearance.  They don't talk much, but the code is still there.
