Message-ID: <1002@ut-ngp.UUCP> Date: Thu, 4-Oct-84 16:07:41 EDT Article-I.D.: ut-ngp.1002 Posted: Thu Oct 4 16:07:41 1984 Date-Received: Sat, 6-Oct-84 02:01:02 EDT Organization: U.Texas Computation Center, Austin, Texas Lines: 59 I've just gotten wind of a new line of Unix workstations from Tektronix. The slightly confused salesman gave me the following information: ----- Tektronix 6000 series Workstations ----- HARDWARE Processor : National 32016 ( formerly 16032 ? ) Coprocessors : National 32081 ( formerly 16081 ? ) National MMU ( don't know old or new numbers ) Disk : Internal Winchester Drive(s) 10-80 MB Floppy Drive ( 360 KB ) Display(s) : Monochromatic : 640x480 scrolled in 1024x1024 OR Monochromatic : 1024x768 ( scrolled ? ) OR 16 Color : 640x480 ( scrolled ? ) OR 16 Color : 1280x1024 ( 4115B display - beautiful ) OR 256 Color : 1280x1024 ( ditto ) RAM : 1 MB Standard Expandable with 512KB, 1MB, and 2MB boards LAN Interface : IEEE 802 Ethernet Miscellaneous : Multiple RS232/RS422 Ports IEEE488 Port Several Expansion Slots SOFTWARE OS : UTEK, Tektronix' implementation of Unix 4.2bsd (!) Other SW : Windowing package Other Applications ----- END OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT ( or RUMORS if you prefer ) ----- The small versions of this look similar to the 4404 box ( which uses 4.2bsd as it's kernel, I was told ). The best thing about these is the price. The smallest is in the $10K region, while the workstation based on the 4115B display ( which is the most beautiful color display I've ever seen ) with 1 MB RAM and 40 MB disk is in the $32K range, quite a bit cheaper than competitive color boxes with much less impressive grephics. The sales rep claimed that these were introduced this week. Does anybody know about them? Has anybody seen them? C'mon, Tektronix, I know you're out there. If the sales reps will talk about them, then you Tektronix weenies can tell all of us on the net about your new products. Let's hear it.
