It's not so much Western Eupore that the Soviets want, it's the Middle
East. Since the middle ages Russia has coveted Constantinople and the
Dardanelles, and now that the Mideast has become so strategically
important because of its oil, the temptation has become much stronger.
Why else would the USSR go to so much much trouble consolidating its power
in Afghanistan?
