I've only been in the SF Bay area once (on a vacation in '83).  One of the
most striking things I noticed when I was out there was how many different
types of people (different colors, religions, sexual preferences) there
were, and how little tension there was among them.  I don't think I've
ever been in a place where there was less (apparent) tension between groups.
I found it really interesting to observe the differences between the way
people treated each other in SF and the way they treated each other in Mass.
(where I lived at the time).  In some ways, it was a rather spooky feeling!
