    I don't what the Tae Kwan Do folk mean by red yellow etc, but the origin
of the traditional Japanese White/Brown/Black system is historical and
interesting. Before the regular system of ranks, a karateka simply never
washed his belt after he began training. A brown belt reflected an
intermediate time in training, and black showed long enough for (presumed)
mastry of the art.

    There are even those who see a full circle in the phenomenon of a really
well worn belt turning white again from wearing right through the outer
layers of material.
