Thanks to all who wrote in response to my query on how to shorten
my Dieffenbachia.

I tried to air-layer the plant, but -- horror of horrors -- the stalk
snapped when I tried to insert a toothpick into the slit. I just stuck
the top of the plant down into some dirt with a little root hormone
and hoped for the best. Well, the plant lost about 4 lower leaves,
but it did indeed sprout roots and recover.

I also took care to water and feed the stump, and whaddya know, it
sprouted two little buds, one at the base of the plant and one at
the top near the cut. The little buds grew into leaves, so
now I've got *two* Dieffenbachias, both nice and healthy.
