O'Tuama, _The Compleat Guide to Blink Dogs_ (3 vol.). Dogpatch, Boney & Liverbite, 1984. Cloth, $49.50; paper, $20.95; embossed trollhide, 500 g.p. Just in time for the Christmas holiday trade, Professor O'Tuama has unleashed a new opus in her crusade against reality. This is a book to delight breeders and laymen alike. It is hand- somely produced, with eight full-color plates and matching tableware. More importantly, O'Tuama brings the full weight of her scholarship to bear on this volume; the chapters on Blink Dogs in World War II, Shakespeare and Blink Dogs, Nietzsche and Blink Dogs, and Blink Dog Day Care Centers are mandatory reading for every well-informed citizen. This reviewer was unaware, for example, until reading Professor O'Tuama's book, that no fewer than four partial skeletons of blink dogs were unearthed in the recent bulldozing of Stonehenge for construction of a public toilet complex. It is fascinating details like these that make the book so enjoyable. While this book cannot be recommended loudly enough, a few minor errors have crept into the first edition: Cleveland is in Ohio, not Iowa; Umber Hulks do not regenerate; "ecstasy" is not spelled with an "x"; Irish whiskey does not taste better than orc excretions. But this is not to disparage an otherwise admirable effort. -- Col. G. L. Sicherman ...seismo!rochester!rocksanne!rocksvax!sunybcs!gloria!colonel
