As far as meeting women (or people in general, for
that matter), my preferred course of action is to
invite them to do something interesting (i.e., one of
my hobbies) other than the traditional dating-type
activities (which are usually awkward and expensive).

This way, I KNOW I'm going to have a good time, and
if the other person doesn't, it's because they aren't
really interested in the same things I am, and hence
there is really no basis for a relationship.

The activities I prefer are usually day-time, out-doors,
and involve some other people as well, so the situations
are very non-threatening to the skittish. It gives my
new (potential) friend a chance to be around others,
taking some of the pressure off by removing the one-on-one
flavor of a typical "date", allowing them to make more
friends, and allowing me to see how that person gets along
with others (in particular, my established friends, which
  is important).

The key is having enough real common interests, not
kidding yourselves about what those interests really are,
and basing your activities on those interests.
