That's the SR500, made from 1978 through 1981.  You can tell
which year by a final character:  E=78, F=79, G=80, H=81.
Yamaha may have made it as early as 1977 (which would be "D").
Thus, the SR500G is the 1980 model.  Not only that, one of them's
for sale here in the Chicago area with only 5000 mi!  Like new,
with the official shop manual & a Chilton's.  High torque,
low RPM engine gives you quick response in any gear.  Gets
about 70 MPG.  Maintenance is trivial.  Price negotiable.

It's a no-frills bike that never caught on--has very nice
lines, no electric start (but a compression release so you
don't break your ankle)--not recommended for a beginner.
But Yamaha's scaled-down thumper, the "Exciter" series (with
only electric start) is targeted specifically for the novice
rider and seems to be popular.  Curious the difference a
few cc's make.
