It may interest those who believe that "gal" is a better word
than "girl" when speaking of/to women that my Webster's New
Collegiate says that "gal" is a direct alteration of "girl". So,
in a technical sense at least, gal is as bad as girl.

P.S. My, how interesting reading the dictionary is! It also claims that
"guy" is directly attributable to good old Guy Fawkes (you remember, he
tried to blow up Parliment in 1605). And the definitions are quite
amazing:

	1. a grotesque effigy of Guy Fawkes paraded and burned in England
	    on Guy Fawkes day.
	2. (chiefly Brit.) a person of grotesque appearance.
	3. man, fellow.
