For one thing, microwave popcorn uses coconut oil. 
I don't know what effect that has on the cooking, or
whether that is sufficient information to execute the 
home preparation of microwave popcorn, but note that coconut
oil is higher in saturated fat content then (to my knowledge)
any other vegetable oil.
