At age 22, there are more men than women, but sometime during that year,
the balance shifts, and at age 23 there are more women than men. From then
on it is all downhill. By the time a woman is 40, for instance, there are
almost 300 single women for every 100 available men.

This scarcity of husband material is due to the fragility of the male sex.
The male suffers a higher death rate during infancy, childhood and
adolescence.
