JUDGE PREFERS LADY LAWYERS IN SKIRTS

Crown Pt, IN (UPI) -- Women lawyers wear the pants in Judge James L.
Clement's courtroom, if they like, even though he prefers them in
skirts.

The Superior Court judge issued a memo Tuesday telling Lake
County Prosecutor Jack A. Craawford , "It is my position that slacks
and/or pantsuits are inappropriate courtroom attire for women lawyers."

Crawford employs 21 women deputy prosecutors. He said they
unanimously reacted to the memo as being sexist and he decided to issue
no such directive to them.

A confrontation appeared to be brewing, with deputy prosecutor
Marleen Langfield determined to continue wearing her usual pantsuit on
the job Wednesday.

	Instead, Clement backed down.

"It is not a court order or anything of the sort," the judge
said Wednesday. He earlier had said he might consider issuing an order
on the matter.

Langfield's garb may have prompted the memo. She had worked in
other courtrooms before this week, but first appeared before Clement
Monday.

Her wardrobe for court is mostly pantsuits, she said.
