It is certainly the case that in 5.2 you experience a stange sense of
loss either (and only!) when you read an enchant weapon scroll and you
either are wielding no weapon or an item that is not recognized as a
weapon (ie a potion), or when you read a scroll of hold monster and there
are no monsters to hold.  It is not the case with scare monster (which is
the maniacal laughter scroll) or when you are not wearing armor and read
an enchant armor scroll.  I'm not sure what happens in the case of no
armor but it is definitely *not* the strange sense of loss.
