My father says he heard it in college in the mid 30's. I don't doubt that there was a version in the early 50's though; the idea that covering other people's songs showes a lack of creativity is a fairly new one. While we are on old silly songs , how about the ever popular "Flat foot floogie with a floy floy", or "The Booglie Wooglie Piggly Wiggly" (this one is really bad, though I kind of like the other).
