Except for some really gross dependencies on misfeatures of the old 6502,
existing code should work just fine using the 65C02.  I did this switch
on my Apple //e a long time ago and have had no problems with it.

However, unless you are going to use the new instructions there is very
little reason to switch.  If you DO use the new instructions then your
code will not port to any machine except the Apple //c.
