I think Mark Horton and Chuq have overstepped > their domain in its creation. The reasons may not be good, but here they are as I see them, and why I'm doing this: (1) many of the groups have reached the point where it is not easy to read them on a continuing basis. Most of these groups are going to be moderated as the people moderating them get up to speed. The hope is to try to catch and reroute inappropriate traffic and reduce multiple duplicate followups (such as the current McCartney discussion>), not limit discussion. This is designed to be a subset of net.singles, not neccessarily a replacement for. (2) If Lauren's plan for transmitting usenet by satellite or CATV goes through, all groups will have to be moderated for legal reasons. Part of this whole thing is to see if moderation, which has worked reasonably well on Arpanet, will work here. If not, Lauren's stuff simply isn't feasible. (3) Usenet has finally grown to the point where the old style laissez faire anarchy stopped working. Moderators may not be the ultimate solution, but they've worked in other situations. We'll see how it goes, and if it doesn't work we can always take a step back because we aren't burning our bridges behind us. There is no plan to kill off net.singles. I can understand if you can't support mod.singles. It simply may not work, but I'm willing to give it a try. Something needs to be done to help keep usenet from outgrowing itself, and I think this has a good potential for making that possible. If the majority of the group doesn't want a moderated topic, they should let me know and I'll cancel mod.singles. I'm attempting to do this to make things better for all of us (and I certainly have better things to do, anyway...) Ok, quickie poll time: mod.singles, yes or no? Mail them (MAIL! MAIL!) to me at nsc!chuqui or nsc!singles-request and I'll see how it all comes out. chuq -- From the Department of Bistromatics: Chuq Von Rospach {cbosgd,decwrl,fortune,hplabs,ihnp4,seismo}!nsc!chuqui nsc!chuqui@decwrl.ARPA How about 'reason for living?'
