You were doing all right at first, but you didn't keep it up long enough. The biggest mistake most people make is giving a dog too much freedom too soon. You want to gradually increase his space. 4*6 is OK for now, but you want to soon give him a little more. Can you partition off a portion of the basement? What ever you do, be patient. He probably should not have the run of the house until he's 9 months to a year. In fact, you might want to allow him only a partial run of the house even then. You might also try varying his location if you can. Try a bathroom. There's not much to damage, and it can be quite comfortable. If you are worried about the door, leave it open and buy a couple of kiddie gates. (Two should be enough if you have some ingenuity.) Good luck. I hope you succeed.
