If it is a DZ, remember that they interrupt on every char in. Maybe the
interrupt logic is going to sleep, could also be dirty contacts between
board and backplane. Cleaning the contacts and reseating the board may
just do the trick. I have seen some very funny things solved by doing
that. Also if it is a DZ, check the ribbon cable between the ports and
the controller, it may not be properly seated. I say this because you
stated that it would not echo.
