I have been trying to so some stuff with Emacs subprocesses, and have a
problem that is most likely obvious to someone out there. Regardless of
what I am trying to do, I have reduced the question to this:

The first time I execute:

(start-process "ls" "testa")

it works. Thereafter, each invocation simply exits with no clue as to
what is going on (i.e. no output, no error message, no status available
from Emacs other than 1, 0, or -1). I have tried to send an extra
"kill" to the process after it has expired, in case there was a status
bit somewhere, but no luck. What am I doing wrong?
