Here at Kent University, we encode images using both quadtree and run-length
codings. The amount of compression due to these techniques is usually about
the same, in the order of 30-80 %. On top of this we use a standard
compression utility, either compact or compress (the latter is rather
better). The resulting file is often 80-95 % smaller than the original raster,
(very dependent on image type, though).
