The 82586 processor handles mainly the media access protocols (I think).
Since the Sytek network is CSMA/CD, all they have to do is put different
serial encoder on and they have a broadband network.  The reason they can
use CSMA/CD on a rather large CATV plant is the data rate on the broadband
channel is only 128kbps (assuming it is the same as the Sytek Localnet 20
product line).
