The answer to your question is simple, so I'll take the time to answer it.

Almost all decks have a fast-forward scan (aka "Cue").  You just have to
consider if it works (i.e., the picture is not screwed up) at the speed
at which you like to record, and if you do not mind the time delay (short)
that VHS decks need to slightly change the threading of the tape before and
after this operation.
