Boy, aren't we rational and factual today!  I guess I should expect no
more in net.flame though...

You should check how well Ford Tempo/Topaz did in the recent tests.
Flunk!  (And that's no *fluke*).  VWs and other European cars have
considerably more advanced passive *and* active safety features than
U.S. vehicles, starting from the body construction, to steering
geometry and brakes, and on to the first automatic seat belts.  There
may be more damage to the *car*, but less to the *occupants*.  Is that
not safety?
