This is suppose to allow for easy sharing of tapes, etc. [I thought this also, but personally have not found many ocasions where I wanted to share tapes.] While VHS is the overall sales leader in the country, there are also areas where Beta sells more. Rochester NY (where I live) is an example of such an area.
