One of Geoff's points (making polite, continued passes at women) reminds me of
an experience I had in college.

I was a Junior, and I met this really pretty freshman. Well, I met her in
October, and tried asking her out repeatedly, usually in a playfully
flirtatious way, every other time I saw her somewhere. Well, she repeatedly
turned me down, but I didn't let it get to me. Since she wasn't going out
with anyone, I didn't feel I was disrupting an ongoing relationship or
anything, I just saw it as a "game." In fact, I got so used to her turning me
down, that I was TOTALLY unprepared when, after returning to school from
Christmas vacation, I jokingly tried asking her out again, and she said "OK!"
Now the shoe was on the other foot, and I was so used to getting a "no," I
didn't know what to do now that she said "yes!"

Well, everything turned out fine, and we were boyfriend and girlfriend all that
semester. In fact, we have been very good friends since (and we first met 11
years ago).

I asked her once a few years ago, when we were remeniscing, about why she
put up with my flirtations for 3 months, and after all her rejections she
finally decided to go out with me. She replied: "Well, I knew that any guy
who would keep trying, for three months, to go out with me must REALLY be
interested in ME!" Just goes to show you that SOMETIMES some persistent,
flirtation and pursuit, can pay off.

p.s. But remember, what works in college often doesn't work in the real world!
