After more than a year of controversy, an advisory committee to the airline
industry has concluded they do not.  While saying the computers should not
be prohibited, the head of the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics
recommended as an extra precaution that the machines not be used during
takeoff and landing, when the need for radio-controlled navigation systems
is most critical.

[ I, recently, read that some airlines now explicitly permit their use. ]
