     I too have found this to happen to me (I have an Ann Arbor Genie).
What's happening is that someone's sick idea of a joke is to put an 
(you know, ascii code 033, ^[, alias escape, [ etc.) AT THE END OF A LINE.
I haven't looked at my manual to find out what that escape sequence does, but
the only cure I have found that works (short of powering the terminal off/on)
is to hit -SHIFT-RESET. That's , SHIFT, and RESET all at the same
time. Don't know if it will work for all Ann Arbor terminals, but it does work
for a Genie.  So Dr. Dart, you are not hallucinating, and that's the cure for
your malady.
