Intel calls it the 82586 Local Area Network Coprocessor.
Not ethernet processor. It can be used to implement an ethernet
interface, but it can also do other things, like run lower
speed (lower cost) local area networks. My personal opinion is
that the versatility of the 82586 is a good thing because it allows
you to do more with the same silicon while not doing any particular
application less well, thanks to its programability.

And it interfaces to the 80186 VERY easily.
