Replacement for Leather________________________________________________________

A while back, somebody sent an article out entitled "Veggie Shoes"
which asked about shoes made of something besides leather. He asked that
replies be mailed to him, so no discussion of it popped up.
I want to expand the question a bit. I'd prefer not to wear leather
or anything else that is made with dead animals. Besides, I don't like the
smell or feel of leather. My belt is canvas and my wallet is denim. I wear
running shoes most of the time. Everything else is cotton.

However, I would like to have sturdier shoes for outdoorsy stuff:
chopping wood and hiking and such. What are my alternatives? Also, I ride
a motorcycle. If I ever have an accident, I'd like to have a sturdy jacket.
	What to do?

Anything non-animal would be appreciated. I like to avoid synthetics,
usually because of poor quality and their impact on the environment, but I'm
open to suggestions. Flames are emphatically not welcomed.
