When looking at disk cacheing, don't neglect the heavily buffered
hardware (well, firmware) buffering in modern disk controllers.
For example, last week IBM announced a new version of their 3880
disk controller with up to 32 megabytes of RAM cache, implemented
with 256K DRAMS. It transfers to and from main memory at
3MB/sec. Now, there's a disk controller for real men.
