 -> So the word "girl" conjures up images of dependancy, a poorly developed

The conotation depends on the situation and the person--or don't you
think for yourself?

 -> And even if you personally don't consciously think of these images, 
 -> the use of 'girl' in place of 'woman' just reinforces these ideas 
 -> among those who do. 

I refuse to take responsibility for the way others think.

My use of "woman" and "girl" (though I prefer to use "gal") is
tailored to the person I'm addressing or those I'm with, consideration
for these others being my prime concern.

 -> ...a 'working woman' is used to describe someone who works at 
 -> a job outside the home. 

At least this is an improvement (however minor)--"working woman" 
used to refer to prostitutes!  :-)
