The government of India has accepted a U.S. invitation to include an Indian
astronaut in the crew of the space shuttle mission in 1986 which will deploy
India's U.S.-built Insat 1-C weather and communications satellite. This
would be India's second astronaut. The first, Rakesh Sharma, was aboard
the Soviet Soyuz T-11 spacecraft last April. The Indian selected for the
U.S. flight would be either a scientist or an engineer with the Indian
Space Research Organization.
