They're "Teleport Away" and "Teleport To"; #1 will zap a critter
off to another location on the current level; hopefully, not a location
right next to you. #2 will zap a critter right up next to you; useful when
encountering a monster room with one wimpy monster, such as an Aquator, and
a number of other ugly uglies--zap the wimp in order to block the doorway,
and then use bow&arrow/shurikens/darts to knock off the bad guys while they're
on a diagonal, and unable to hit you.

I believe both staves always hit. (version 5.3)

The Amulet will first appear on level 26. It will keep appearing
on every level as you go down--if you're not carrying it.

I don't think 55 HP are enough to go up against a U, even with the
stated weapon, armor, and strength; I think I'd try out some of the magic
items, even unknown ones, rather than slugging it out toe-to-toe with him.
The usual bag of tricks that one would employ on a (T,G,J) are what's called
for.

I'm curious; what else would one use a Slow Monster staff for?

Okay, in 5.3, the Scare Monster scroll generates the "maniacal
laughter" message when read; the Hold Monster scroll generates the "sense of
loss" message when read if no monsters are present; and the enchantment
scrolls, and the "rustoleum" scroll, as far as I can recall, generate NO
message if nothing's available to enchant.
