In the case of rings this is a bit less risky than wearing them, but you might find yourself wielding a cursed ring as a weapon while your +1,+3 Bastard Sword hangs useless at your side. My experience has been that it's OK to I.D. scrolls and potions in magic puddles. You can usually ID a stick by testing it, but rings should be unworn until you can find an identity scroll unless you find yourself in a desperate situation and putting on that unknown ring is the only chance you have of getting out of it. When I first started playing the game, I just tried everthing indiscriminately and wound up with a cursed ring about 5 times out of 7. After this period, I learned not to try on rings or strange armor unless I had either an identity scroll or a scroll of remove curse, which is the only way to get the damn things off. -- Bob Fishell ihnp4!ihu1g!fish
