===============
The abomination that was the Roman Catholic Church at the time of the
Crusades and into the Middle Ages was only a popular counterfeit of
the church that was founded by Jesus and his followers.
===============
As Idries Shah points out, this is generally true of any religion. The
prophet may have had it right, but no-one (except possibly a few in direct
contact with him) understood what he had to say. The "church" that
results is always a perversion of what the prophet intended, even in
those few cases where the guides (priests or whatever) try their best
to follow his notions rather than their own. Jesus is a bit far away
now for ANYONE to know what he might have meant, but we can be pretty
sure it isn't what any of the established or the reformed churches claim.
