[ A car is a hole in the road into which you pour money. ]
Many thanks to those who responded; I never expected the flood of letters
and postings. Pretty much everybody figured it was a vacuum leak, but most
figured on the accessories...well, I kind of wish it HAD been a small
vacuum-assist hose. Well...
The problem was (as was noted by at least one contributor...) the
POWER BOOSTER for the BRAKES. There was a peanut-sized hole RUSTED AWAY
in the booster unit where it attached to the firewall. So, it was new
booster time... I am happy to report that the car now behaves very well:
performance is up, the engine is running VERY smoothly, and braking power
(which I'd thought was pretty good before) is significantly improved. I
don't know about gas mileage; I'm planning a short trip out of town this
weekend, so I should be able to get some idea of any change in that, too.
Again, many many thanks to all who responded.
