Causes of WWI:

Item: The Austro-Hungarian Empire wanted a seaport. Thus they
were trying to extend their influence on the Balkan Peninsula.
Taking over Serbia would give them a strong foothold and a good
stab at such a port. Franz Ferdinand was killed by a Serbian.

Item: Russia had (still has) a need for a warm water port. Thus,
they were interested in the Balkans for the same reason.
Also, the Russians still looked bad because of having lost
	       the Russo-Japanese war in 1909.

Item: Kaiser Willhelm II of Germany wanted to be another Frederik
	       the Great.

Everyone else was drawn in because of alliances. The US was supposedly
motivated by revenge (the Lusitania), but there were probably other reasons.
