I'm contemplating buying a VCR. One consideration is that I dispise
waiting for commercials. Given that I know of no sucessful devise
on the market that can detect commercials (and stop recording), I
would like to tape programs and Fast Forward past them when viewing.

What hardware optimises this application. Obviously one would want
FF on a remote control. But are some models much better at such
short "FF and back to play" operations than others? Do I need some
type of "scan" to see when the commercial is over? Is Beta inherently
superior in this operation due to non-retraction of the tape for FF?
(My bias is toward VHS due to sheer popularity where I work, and toward
Hi-Fi. Portability holds no charm for me.)

Thank you for the help.
