Lines: 24 MAZDA RX-7 OWNERS !!!!! The steering box in my 1982 RX-7 has failed after 47000 miles. The dealer quotes $479 to replace it with a new unit. A little research here in Madison Wisconsin has led me to three other instances of steering box failure in 81-83 RX-7's, one with only 9000 miles !!!! I feel this indicates a design flaw which Mazda should take some responsibility for fixing. The distributor disagrees (surprise, surprise ...). I need more case historys to bolster my (and other RX-7 owners) cases. If you know of similar failure in 81-83 RX-7's please mail me; 1) the owners name and address 2) the year RX-7 and 3) the mileage when failure occured. I will post the terms of any settlement to Net.Auto. Sean Rooney Dept. of Geology and Geophysics University of Wisconsin path: uwvax!geowhiz!sean ps. The most notable symptom of steering box failure is excessive, unadjustable, steering wheel freeplay.
