With respect to the R600 anti-recommendation posted:

I've been using one for over a year and have been quite pleased with it.
The review in the 1983 World Radio TV handbook reinforces this view.
It is sort of the current VW of communications receivers.
 
Best prices for it seem to consistently be from The Ham Radio Outlet
stores--see their ads in CQ or 73.  (about $280.)

Although I have read reports of problems with backlash in the dial
mechanism with some R600's, I have no appreciable backlash on my
receiver--Perhaps it is a good idea to try before you buy--or 
at least ask the dealer about it beforehand.
