The situation is clearly symmetric wrt men/women vs up/down.  However, if
you have cats, you can figure out pretty quickly that it belongs DOWN,
unless you have pretty sedate cats or like surfing in the bathroom.

Cats will also demonstrate for you that the toilet paper should unroll from
behind, so that when they play with it it rolls up instead of unrolling.

(Maybe this belongs in net.misc.  I haven't the heart to put it in
net.pets.)
