Lines: 17 In my experience, the "red mahogany" stains tend to be too red and too light. I have used Cherry Paste Stain from The Bartley Collection in Prairie View, IL. (312)-634-9510. One advantage of the paste stains is that you can build up multiple coats to make the finish as dark as you want it. Also, if you get unlucky and find some light spots after staining (from glue or oversanding, etc.) you can use the paste like a paint to cover the spots. Whether you can use the paste successfully OVER the stain you've already applied can only be determined by experiment. You may have to strip the piece and start from scratch. In any case, I would always recommend trying the stain on a small area before committing it to the entire piece. Incidentally, Bartley sells a fine line of reproduction antique furniture kits. The wood is always superb and the craftmanship has to be seen to be believed. I built their Chippendale Block Front Chest in cherry and it is glorious. They also make a paste varnish which allows you to get a hand rubbed look without a whole lot of work. (I'm just a customer of Bartley.) ...ihnp4!tellab1!tellab2!dag Donald Graft
