I have studied etymology and I must say that it is possible for the meaning
of a word to change over the span of only one generation. This is especially
true if the original meaning(s) of the word have already become muddled or
if the word has simply gone out of general use (as is the case with hack).
In any case, the media did not think up the original hacker term; it has been
around for quite a while (I'm not sure but I think it started in the late 50's
at MIT).
