Modern tapes by Scotch and Ampex, and perhaps others, have a back-coating
which assists in tape-to-head contact and reduces print-through.  This
coating is duller in appearance than the oxide side of the tape.  Therefore
you would, in this case, use the shiny side against the heads, as it
was delivered.
