If it cut down the AM sensitivity, retune the car radio.  There should
be some external adjustment labeled "ant tune".  It may be internal
to the radio and more trouble than it's worth, especially if you don't
care about AM that much.  However, you may want to retune it for
maximum reception of the shortwave to increase sensitivity.
