Early classical Greek culture, for instance, valued homosexual relations with an elder man and a young boy. The relationship was not strictly sexual; the older man was in some sense also a tutor and mentor for the boy. The Greeks felt this was a more "pure" love than a man's love for a woman. (There is some really amusing Greek poetry about this subject, by the way. Also, in some of Plato's dialogues there are some eye-opening references to this practice).
