The place that I used to work got a dimension PBX system and
there was a nifty thing (I forget what it was called) that would
allow you to turn off all beeps and buzzes.  It was the *5
function!  This was used to prevent call waiting signals from
comming to your phone.  It was entered before you dialed the number.
It was really nice for modem use.  It did however only work
for that conversation.  After you hung up, things went back to
normal.
