Another point about British English and number is that in some cases a group
will be referred to in the singular or plural depending upon its collective
mental state, e.g., "The committee *is* unanimous" but "The committee *are*
divided."  Thus, a unanimous committee is *one* thing, while a divided
committee is *more* than one thing.
