Born and raised in St. Louis, I first learned about "warped"
geography my first week at Stanford.
I met a woman who was born and raised in LA.
When I told her I was from St. Louis, she said "Oh, from the South."
I informed her that LA was significantly farther south than STL.
She responded, "Well, isn't St. Louis down around New Orleans, Louisiana?"
Sigh.

In my continuing geography lessons, I moved to Colorado and heard
the following on the radio one morning.
The DJ was giving away tickets to something, and a woman called in.
Having won the tickets the DJ put her on the air:

DJ: Where are you calling from?
Woman: I, ah, I don't know!
DJ: Well, you must be in Boulder.
Everyone who doesn't know where they are live in Boulder.

A final lesson: upon arriving at Duke University in North Carolina
I overheard the following conversation. (Note: the University of
South Carolina is located in Columbia, SC)

A: I just came from a conference at Columbia.
B: Oh, I didn't know you went to New York.
A: No, No, I was at USC.
B: How was the weather in California?
