The specific question of the ball striking only the rubber on the
pitcher's mound was addressed in "So You Think You Know Baseball!" (a
compilation of the series that ran in the Saturday Evening Post).

It is a foul ball, even (and this was the case cited) if the ball
hits the rubber, bounds back toward the plate, and the catcher grabs it
while standing on the plate.
