 And do you know why it generated such good code ?
 It had to.  Back in those days compilers were looked upon with great
 suspicion.  The only way compilers could gain any kind of acceptance
 among the "user community"  was to produce code that was as good - 
 or nearly as good as that written by crack asembly language hackers.
