I too wasted my money on the HES "assembler" before opting for MAE; avoid
the HES product at all costs. I'm reasonably satisfied with MAE, which has
as much power and speed (given the limitations of the disk) as I need.

I also had lock-up problems with the scrolling program, and lost a lot of
work before I realised that the problem is related to lines longer than one
(40-column) screen-width. Now that I keep my source-lines under 40
characters (commenting the code is more difficult, but it is more readable
on a 40-col screen) the problem has gone away.

PS: have any MAE users out there made contact with the User's Group (ATUG)?
I'm wondering whether they have any useful free software.
