FYI, a second line strictly for data use is NOT an expensive proposition;
call your local phone company and inquire about a "teen line." I don't
know how broadly the following applies (can Lauren or someone like him
confirm?), but in the NJ Bell service area, at least, a teen line is
	- cheap, like $5/month
	- unlisted by default (so you can leave the ringer OFF, every call
	  is a wrong number, or deserves an auto-answer tone!),
	- can have different calling services. For example, I had call
	  waiting and pulse code on my main number, no call waiting and
	  touch tone on the teen line.
	- toll charges are listed and totalled separately, facilitating the
	  preparation of vouchers and/or tax records.

In short, the irate fathers of the past appear to have demanded precisely the
characteristics you want for that second line -- cheap, fully separate, and
unlisted. What more could you ask?
