My ex-sweetie and I are still very, very close friends. We see
each other frequently, are symphony-buddies, confide in each
other, call upon each other for support. We decided, mutually,
to call it quits when we both recognized that we wanted different
things out of the relationship.

Some details: Elaine is 10 years older than I am, with two
teenaged kids (one of each gender). We went together for about
three years, about half of that living together -- with her kids.
She was looking for a relationship that would lead toward
marriage; I was not looking for that at the time. Yes, I got
along well with her kids -- indeed, still do.

Why are we still friends? Probably for three reasons:

	- the relationship initially started as a friendship,
	  growing into a love affair from that;
	- we enjoyed each others' company, still do, and share
	  many common interests;
	- we reached the decision to move on together, well
	  before we started getting on each others' nerves.

Yes, we are now seeing other people at various times. It's a
relationship I value highly.
