The laws and procedures for dealing with unauthorized credit card
usage vary from state to state, but by and large your BEST protection
is to carefully choose the institutions from which you obtain national
credit cards.  A Visa card from Bank of America is not necessarily
the same as one from Bodunk Bank of Biloxi.  In particular, the larger
banks tend to be somewhat more reasonable about mischarges on accounts.
I had a problem with a "mystery" charge on my bill some years ago
(on a B of A card) and they happily removed the charge.
