I wouldn't say that the net is all that fragile, considering how
large and diffuse it is, but certainly it is clear that if very
much of the sort of stuff that went on at UNC happens at other
places, it may very well become an unpleasant place. What I
want to know is whether this is just an isolated case, or
whether people have heard reports of other sites practicing the
same sort of censorship. It seems as though there are a lot of
positions that a management could take on the net -- perhaps the
people in charge are sympathetic and read the news themselves, in
which case things are in good shape, or perhaps (as seems to be
the case at Berkeley) they just don't care what happens on the
net, or perhaps (as at UNC) they take an active and malevolent
interest in what goes on. It may be that the problems at UNC
were just a result of the personalities involved, or the
provincialism of the University (which I know nothing about) --
I can easily see how somebody with a short enough patience and
tolerance could be inclined to persecute someone like Tim, who
very vocally insists upon his rights. If this is in fact just an
isolated case, then I hope it stays that way, but if it is just
one of many such cases, then we have more cause to worry...
