"No soap, radio" is infamous, but few people know where it came
from.  It was explained in Safire's "On Language" column in the
NY Times Magazine about a month ago.  Some researchers in the
50's (sociology I think) were investigating aspects of conformity
and peer pressure, so they made up a joke totally devoid of
meaning.  The object was to see whether people would pretend to
"get it."  They clearly succeeded beyond their (or anyone's)
wildest nightmares.
