Washington, Computer Sci Lines: 20 [Don't call me 'tiny'!] Saavik was referred to as 'Mr. Saavik' in STII as well, and if memory serves me correctly (too lazy to look at my tape), not just by Kirk but Spock (at the beginning of the film, during the Kobayashi Maru sequence). The explanation that I have heard that makes the most sense is that it is some sort of tradition in the Navy (the "real" one), and since Star Fleet is patterned on the Navy in many of its traditions ("Permission to come aboard," in STI, etc.), they included this one in the movie, too.
