Even if optimum sharpness could be attained at maximum aperture (as
a previous poster claimed was theoretically true), practicality 
demands a partially stopped down lens in most cases.  The
shallow depth of field at say, f/1.4 or f/2.0, combined with the
small focus ing screen will keep most of us mere mortals from getting
that optimum sharpness.
