You see, when we broke up Ma Bell, the operating companies started buying more of the off-brand switches, instead of staying with the high-quality AT&T switches they had used for years. True, some of the other switches are cheaper, but it's the difference between buying a chevette and a mercedes. You expect one to fail more often that the other.
