It turns out that for most of the time we were together we were both doing
moderately similar work: I was working in a neurosurgery research lab and
she was working on the neurosurgery ward at the hospital. So it's not that
I wasn't interested, or that she wasn't interesting (as I tried to point
out). The content of our jobs differed in an important way. My work then
emphasized learning and integrating new facts about the brain, she was
primarily caring for patients and knew (comparatively) little about the
brain.

There may be another factor here: my background. My parents worked in the
same field (microbiology) and always talked shop over dinner, etc. I have
a lot of interests besides brains and computers, but the two way flow of
ideas and technical information is one of the things I value in an intimate
relationship. My current SO is finishing her Ph.D. in microbiology (a
coincidence!) and contributes a lot to our discussions even though she
also knows (comparatively) little about brains or computers. From a
personality perspective these two women (nurse and microbiologist) are
very much alike. The main difference is their intelligence. Anyway,
the two of them will be meeting each other in a few weeks, and it should be
really fun (one of the joys of staying friends with former SO's).
