I worked for Sperry (Great Neck, N.Y.) one summer.  Several
times someone would remark to me "My, you've got a drawl.
Are you from the South?"

I spoke at that time what I would refer to as "Midwest Urban"
as distinguished from Midwest Rural.  I grew up in Rolla which
is 100 miles southwest of St. Louis.  I would reply, "No, I'm
from Missouri."

"Oh, yes, that's the South" was the usual response!

I think the East Coast dwellers think that you can stand
in Missouri and throw rocks into California.
