Would anyone feel differently if AT&T initially offered only
"complete" UNIX, and then a year later also gave the option
of buying pieces at a lower cost (without raising the price for the
"complete" version)?

My only point is that at-least-somewhat-sophisticated buyers
(which includes most multi-user micro customers, I think) base
their decisions on the price/performance of the configuration that meets
their needs, without regard for the existence or price/performance 
of any other configurations that may be available.  

I promise to say no more.
