Having spent some part of my life trying to make people laugh I have found
that the best jokes are always about the unmentionable.  If there is an
underlying tension about a situation, making a joke about it allows everyone
release from that tension through laughter.

Therefore, I would say that tension rather than sorrow are the reasons for
jokes.  Like crying, laughing allows that tension to be released.
