Jeff,
     I don't think that putting a potential SO on a pedestal is common
to men only.  I think that you always tend to look for that "perfect"
person of the opposite sex.  If you see someone that even comes close, 
you are going to put them on a pedestal (after all, you only want
the best for yourself).  Likewise, if you have a realistic view of
yourself, you are going to like yourself but be your own worst critic.
(I like me, but I can always improve on the product!).  I know with me,
this creates a problem:  I see the potential SO as flawless but I am
all too aware of my flaws.  I think maybe we all suffer from this at
one time or another.

Hang in there! - like yourself - you are your own best friend.
