  I had the same error a week ago.  It turns out that the directory got
trashed and the command-shift-turnon&off trick did not seem to help.
I ended up trashing the directory even more on purpose by using the
guided tour disk (old finder) and forced the system to realize that it
was in need of repair. I said ok and it fixed itself!  It's nice that
the recover capability is there (if you understand what is going on) but
it was tense for awhile.
