I did not see Danny DeVito on Carson, but although I was intrigued by
the "polishing" explanation for the title "Romancing the Stone", I got
a different impression from viewing the movie.

Near the end, DeVito claims that, although he is a thief, he is at
least HONEST (sic) about it.  He accuses Michael Douglas of being a 
con man, and of "romancing the stone away from her [Kathleen Turner]",
by convincing her that she/they need it.

But after the rather inspired explanation by Gary Murakami, I'm not so 
sure.  Probably we'll never know.
