As is usual with my work, purists would not call this a poem, but here it is:

                TO A LADY

        I am not a poet.

        I cannot woo you
        with impromptu iambic pentameter.

        I can only say
        that I wish you hadn't cut your hair
        before I had a chance to experience its deep, thick richness
        with the depths of my fingers.

        I can only say
        that just because you aren't a WASP
        doesn't mean you're not beautiful.
        It's just that your beauty is of a different type--
                rare
                unique
                priceless!

        I can only say
        that I do want to experience the deep, warm richness
        of your gentleness and sensitivity and understanding and compassion
        (which you cannot cut off)
        with the fingers of my soul.

        I can only say
        that I need you to touch me
        hold me
        (perhaps vouchsafe a kiss)
        help recharge this exhausted man;
        and let me try to return the favor--
        let me be an oasis
        in your own desert of loneliness.

        And I need you to KNOW that you are beautiful...

        before you go
