As best I can determine, it was composed by Gerald Fried for the "Shore Leave" episode and has been called by various names, including "Kirk's Romance Theme" or "Star Trek Love Theme" or "The Ruth Motif", etc. Like almost all program music for TV shows, it is probably untitled. The titles above are mostly inaccurate, because the music was later incorporated into many ST episodes, including "This Side of Paradise" for the Spock and Leila Kalomi affair. So it has nothing specifically to do with either Kirk or Ruth, it was just (apparently) created for the "Shore Leave" episode. Neither can we properly call it "Star Trek Love Theme" because that describes the Star Trek Theme written by Alexander Courage (who also composed the music for "This Side of Paradise", among other episodes). Mostly I just call it The Star Trek Flute Solo. By the way, Music Consultant and Music Coordinator for Star Trek's first season (in which "Shore Leave" and "This Side of Paradise" appeared) were Wilbur Hatch and Julian Davidson, respectively. -- Roger Noe ihnp4!ihlts!rjnoe
