Does anybody know why this happens:

After recently winterizing my motorcycle, I found that my battery
was bone dry and precipitated beyond all repair. I used to check it regulary
(~ every month) and never had any problems. The only time I failed to do so
was on a recent cross-country trip (Toronto to Oregon and return) and this
must have been when it happened.
My question is, why should it boil away in the first place? There
is a voltage regulator on board (by the way, the bike is an '82 CB650C)
and supposedly, this controls such things as the charging rate of my battery.
And secondly, why should the battery draw current if it's charged?
Oh, one more question, when a battery level does go down, does
replenishing it with distilled water return it's original humph? or does
precipitation occur with any water loss?

Truly puzzled (and sobbing at the expense),
