For those of you who are both diligent and curious, it is possible to
dig up a recording of a genuine Castrato singing a work with chorus
and orchestra. Unfortunately, this artist was not terribly well trained,
and the effect is of an amteur singer with a powerful but uncertain
middle-aged female voice. We don't castrate boy sopranos any more,
but Michael jackson may belong in their tradition, and I wonder if he
will start a new trend. Each century seems to find more "humane" ways
to carry out the horrors of the boorish, earlier centuries.
