I'd like to point out that Mad Max occurs in a contemporary pre-holocaust
setting.  It is basically cops driving around in suped-up cars chasing
motorcycle gangs.  Road Warrior is a very loose sequel, the only thing
they have in common is the main character.

Another movie you should add to the list is Damnation Alley.
