It was given to him by the Brigadier soon after he had been exiled to earth by the time lords as a means of transport. Apparently, Pertwee had something of a penchant for gadgets and the car (named "Bessie") was no exeception. It performed various execeptional feats in a number of stories (mostly travelling at some ridiculous speed). Once the Doctor began to travel in the TARDIS again, the car became superfluous and faded out of the story. Can anyone tell me what series have been shown in the US? Have any of the Pertwee stories been broadcast or did syndication start with the first Baker series?
