Your explanation, that the unidentified faces were those of Morbius's
earlier regenerations, doesn't quite satisfy me.  Those unknown faces
flashed on the screen just at the point when the Doctor was having the
worst of it and was presumably going back to his very beginnings.  It 
wasn't until later that he took the upper hand and short-circuited
Morbius's fishbowl.  I lean towards the theory that the faces in
question were merely the work of some special-effects artist working
with incomplete knowledge of the Doctor's background.  (I like the
analogy to the food processors in the Transporter room.)
