Does anyone have any opinions on what type and brand of tape to use in a
reasonably high-end tape deck? I recently purchased a Nakamichi LX-5,
which is a three-head, dual capstan machine. The salesman who sold me
the deck said that tapes such as TDK SA-X, and MAXELL UDXL-IIS, while
good tapes, have too much high end for a deck such as a Nakamichi. He
said that these tapes were really made for low-end decks and portables
which are lacking in high-frequency response. He said that the Nakamichi
does not need this "boost" in the high end, and therefore, he suggested
Denon DX-7's, or Maxell UDXL II (not S). Does this sound reasonable?
Does anyone agree or disagree with this salesman, and if so, why? What
can any of you suggest that might be a better choice of tape? While I am
interested in good sound, I also want a tape that is durable. I listen
to a wide range of music, from Classical to Hard Rock.

Another question: After purchasing my deck, I asked the salesman about
buying a demagnitizer, and the salesman said that Nakamichi's heads do
not need demagnitization as often as other brands of heads do. He said
that once a year is enough, and that I could bring my deck to them once
a year and they would demagnitize the heads for free. This seems to be
quite different from what I have read in various Hi-Fi magazines, some
of which recommend demagnitization as often as every 10 hours! What am
I to do? Any advice?

                          Thanks,
                          Dennis
