Since the cessation of brain activity constitutes death,
perhaps the beginning of such activity signals life.
This condition is probably easier to test than some fairly
arbitrary level of mental capability (above dolphins? below martians?).

Resolution of this issue still leaves the main problem - when is
it valid to take a human life?
