This is a pet gripe of mine.  I called Microsoft once to try to BUY
some manuals and they essentially told me to go jump in a lake --
they told me to call the manufacturer of my system (DEC).  At that
time, DEC had not published ANY useful documentation on MS-DOS.

I don't understand why Microsoft didn't want to sell me the manuals.
I had the order numbers (these are "generic" MS-DOS manuals).

Fortunately, DEC now publishes a reasonably complete set of internal
documentation on the Rainbow and its version of MS-DOS (although
the price is, typically, high...  around $200).  I don't have the
order numbers in front of me but if anyone wants them I can look
it up.
