I would change at 750, 1500, and 3000 miles, the hell with the book. As far as break-in, go easy on the revs as they tell you in the book. The main trick is not to keep up a steady engine speed for more than 5 minutes at a time for the first 1000 miles or so. (maybe it's only 500 these days...I forget).
