A "mailing list" is a fixture of the ARPAnet (and maybe some of the
other non-Usenet nets, too). In ARPA-land, people don't use news or
notes; they get these things by mail by putting their names on mailing
lists.

to, say, SPACE-REQUEST@arpa-site, rather than SPACE@arpa-site. <-

Usenetters don't have to go through this -- just add net.space
to your sequencer or .newsrc or whatever. If you aren't on the ARPAnet
or Bitnet or any of those other networks, don't send out messages
asking to be added to the "mailing list." You are already effectively
on the list (as user "usenet").
