I tried posting this answer to the inquiry about sources of vacuum tubes
when the question first came out on net.ham-radio, but the postnews
software on this host was not working, unbeknownst to me -- items were
posted locally but not transmitted.

So here it is, late but still applicable...

The best and cheapest source of surplus and hard-to-find tubes that I've dealt
with has been Fair Radio Sales, in Lima, Ohio -- look for their tiny little
display ads in CQ and other ham & electronic magazines. Their catalog lists
a lot of older tubes, and they can supply some not in the catalog -- write
your wants. Prices are very cheap, especailly for used/tested tubes, and
they have a lot of neat stuff in addition.
