Recently I have seen a number of postings which, in an effort
to avoid the known bug (on some systems) of articles which begin
with white space, have a single "." on a line by itself.

Some sites treat "." as a terminator, and throw away anything
in the article after that line. Therefore, you should not do this.
Use a dash or a comma if you want it to be as discreet as possible.
Better yet, begin you text in column 1 of your first line of text.
