Today's rock fans apparently don't recognize anything over a few years
old--I'm reminded of a truly strange fellow who ran a late night new
wave show on KGOU here in Norman OK, who had a little phone-in contest
in view of Wall of Voodoo's cover of "Ring of Fire." The question: when
was "Ring of Fire" first recorded. The mingled humor/disgust of hearing
people call in and say "1979?" was only exceeded by that of the fellow's
cartridge that he played, with "YOOUUU LOSE!!!!!....What a maroon!!!"
and people guffawing in the background. (No, I'm not sure when Johnny
Cash first recorded "Ring of Fire"--some time around 1960, I think.)
