I've just learned that my off-the-cuff analysis of how much food our agricultural surplus could be turned into is off by a factor of ten. As near as I can tell, I misquoted the price of potatoes (misread the decimal point). The price of potatoes is in fact about $7 per 50 pound bag, leading to a price of $0.14 per pound of potato, (not $1.50) meaning that our agricultural surplus easily suffices to feed all the hungry of Africa and the East. It turns out that (assuming no OTHER errors) we can add 1300 (not 130) calories to everyone's diet. That would be enough to bring everyone up past the 100% minimum referred to in my almanac. That'll teach me. Thanks to eag!sdc for pointing out my error. Harpo won't let me reply to him directly. And now, back to the uncivilized melee....
