I first encountered the term VDU (Visual Display Unit)
about 1975 when working in London (U.K.) form the British programmers,
who all used it instead of CRT.

To my mind, a CRT os a particular *kind* of VDU.
That is, a VDU could be made from a Cathode Ray Tube, or a plasma display,
or a liquid crystal, to name some real alternatives.
(I am trying to imagine a display made fom an array of LEDs. :-))
