I have chosen to write it using the swedish standard character set (SIS). If you, like me, don't have a SIS-terminal, you will have to do the following translation in your head: } and ] => a and A with little ring on top. Pronounced like o in "more" { and [ => a and A with two dots. Like a in "dare". | and \ => o and O with two dots. Like ea in "heard". You could compare the last two ones to the german "Umlaut", although we of course don't call them that. Now for what I wanted to say. >OK, for all you alcoholics out there, if you *really* don't >want people drinking out of your bottle, get yourself some >Ma"lort (no umlauts in ascii). This is a Swedish concoction >which comes with a root (vegetable matter, not super-user! :-) ) >in the bottle. Truely disgusting. > ihnp4!ihuxl!seifert The swedish snaps called "Beska Droppar" ("Bitter Drops"), is made from wormwood (mal|rt in swedish) and is especially popular among students in engineering schools. True, it is not something you bring to a BYOB party, but it is a natural part of a sill- or sm|rg}sbord meal. Complement with a beer on the side. Another good snaps is Akvavit, which comes in danish, swedish and norwegian style. My favorite is the danish Aalborg Jubilaeum, which I am sure can be found anywhere around the world. Store it in the freezer and use as above. Snaps is *never* taken without a sing-along song preceding it. The first snaps is called "Helan" ("The Whole") and the first song is by tradition "Helan G}r". Here it is with a quick translation reference on the right. -------- Helan g}r. The Whole goes. Sjung hopp fallerallanlallan lej. Sing hey lalala... Helan g}r. Sjung hopp fallerallanlej. Och den som inte helan tar, And he who doesn't take the Whole, han heller inte halvan f}r. He doesn't get the Half either. Helan g}r! The Whole goes! ... (Gulp it down here) Sjung hopp fallerallanlej! -------- Of course there are songs for each of the following toasts as well. They are preferably short, so that you can drink more. The shortest one I know is danish and translates to: NOW! ..decvax!mcvax!enea!erix!leif
