I suspect that the 14-legged gribbles may be wombats in disquise. 
After all, where did the gribbles appear?  The US west coast.  Go
southwest from the west coast and where do you wind up?  Australia! 
The name of a certain marsupial inhabitant of Australia is left as
an exercise for the reader.
