In the source i've seen that password has appeared in wizard.c, sometimes in its encrypted form. The purpose of the password seems to be to let you resume the game faster after having saved. This seems to be its only purpose. I found it rather annoying that after spending a good deal of time getting through the entire adventure, and finally receiving the wizard's password that the password proved to be rather worthless.
