Yes, there are two ways. One that I have tried and one that I have heard
about. First, the one that I use. Since I thought that IBM's Multiplan
was copy protected, I simply purchased the generic one formatted for the
Compaq. It works just as well, though I didn't get the color screens.
That method is simple, straightforward and inexpensive (even cheaper than
university discounts). The second method, whose reliablity I can't vouch
for is to dial up Compuserve and look at the IBM bulletin board for
the code to unlock IBM Multiplan 1.0. I suspect that by the time IBM
delivers 1.1, the code for unprotecting that will be there too.
Please note that I do not condone piracy. Unprotecting should be
done by lawful owners only, so that they may make the backups to which
they are entitled. I personally feel about copy protecting the way that
the NRA feels about guns -- to paraphrase "When copies are outlawed,
only outlaws will have copies."
