Just to add to the redundancy...

I lived in Sweden for 15 months and was not required to have a Swedish
license for the first 12 months.  It is really a question of intent.  If you
are going to stay for an extended period, get a local license, otherwise
you can use your stateside one if you are just there for a few weeks.
If you are in between, then the AAA International one is advisable.  Most
of the Police do speak English in Germany, regardless of what they may tell
you....
