The companies usually claim to either sell matched sets that they have rigorously checked out, and to weed out less-than-optimal performers. I believe at least one of the companies claims to have their tubes custom-manufactured to their own specs. Some of the tubes have extra features, such as gold-plated pins. The companies that come to mind are "Groove Tubes," "Mesa Engineering" and "Peavey Electronics." See an issue of the mag for addresses & details.
