It's hard not to compare with the original movie version, but I thought it stood up well overall. Ann Margaret's portrayal of Blanche was powerful, but I felt it lacking in fragility and vulnerability. Comparing it with Vivien Leigh in the earlier version, this Blanche came across as a much tougher lady. With Leigh it was fully convincing that the rape would shatter her completely, whereas Ann Margaret's Blanche seemed as though she would have taken it in stride. It says a lot for Williams that his Stanley didn't suffer terribly in comparison with Brando, since Brando's assumption of the role is now historic. The production and supporting roles were handled impressively - a huge step ahead of what one normally gets on network TV. - Greg Paley
