Michener. He likes to tell a story in great depth, starting at the "beginning" and going up to the present day. Some examples: Hawaii (sp?) --- history of Hawaii Chesapeake --- the Chesapeake bay area The Source --- Palestine/Fertile Crescent, up to Modern Israel as well as others. Apparently just about all his novels are in this vain. They are very good reading. I found it very hard to put down any of his books that I've read, while I was reading them.
