Earth has enough problems: why not solve them before making new ones in space? Why not do both? They are in no way mutually exclusive. The money being spent on space is a drop in the bucket compared to what's already being spent on the problems of Earth; neither eliminating the space effort entirely nor beefing it up considerably will have any noticeable financial effect.
