The story is "The Saturn Game" by Poul Anderson, serialised in "Explorations" printed by Pinnacle books, isbn 0-523-48-517-4. The back of the title page says "Copyright Analog 1981" for that story, so I suppose one should check issues of Analog in late in 1980 or early in 1981 (the book was published in November 1981). -------
