However, I recently found an older version that was actually used by the US military in WWII. It was designed to test short term memory by presenting patterned nonsense. Among other changes: 1 <==> 2 3 ==> 4 ==> 5 ==> 3 6 brass monkeys (the way cited in <862@cvl.UUCP>) 8 pairs of Don Alphonso's tweezers #s 9 and 10 bear only a slight resemblance to the modern version. As best I can recall, #9 (modern version) had crutches instead of roller skates, but roller skates seem to have been substituted spontaneously in different places. (If enough people are interested, I could post the story of the re-appearing Klingons). There's also a version for D&Ders and Moorcock fans: 7 thousand melniboneans in full battle array [That includes dragons, of course] and an extremely ingroup version for the coventry imaginary world: 7 thousand methylonians in full battle array -- Barry Gold usenet: {decvax!allegra|ihnp4}!sdcrdcf!barryg Arpanet: barry@BNL
