Stay far enough away that his photon torpedoes cannot affect you, but close enough so that he must keeped them charged, thus reducing his speed. If you go around wide enough, he cannot continue the retrograde manuever because of the limited firing arcs of the photon torpedoes. He will be forced to turn to face you, thus separating his ships. Kaufman retrograde does not work well with only one ship. The only problem I see with this tactic is that it gives him ample opportunity to disengage, (if that is what you are trying to prevent).
