Administration Lines: 20 A yellowed old sheet of computer paper is tacked to a door in the basement of Urey Hall near the old NMR labs, and bannered on it is PHYSICS CANCELLED TODAY One expects to see desks and pencils floating casually through the atmosphere, graduate students accelerating past the speed of light, and so on.... For a while I thought that this might have been posted by someone who had read Greg Benford's book TIMESCAPE, which takes place here at UCSD of all places. The plot of the novel deals with the discovery of tachyons, particles which travel faster than the speed of light and backward in time; surely this is a case where physics is 'cancelled'. But the paper is so old, it must have been printed before the novel was written so there can't be any connection. (Can there?) Donn Seeley UCSD Chemistry Dept. RRCF ucbvax!sdcsvax!sdchema!donn
