Shifting trades off two types of load on the engine.  When the engine is
lugging along pulling a heavy load up a hill at low RPM the connecting
rod bearings and the main crankshaft bearings are very heavily loaded
by the pounding of each cylinder.  When the engine is revved up to high
RPM the wear on other parts of the engine such as the cylinder walls
and valve train is increased.  For most modern engines I would definitely
choose higher RPM than lugging the engine down.
