I've done the same thing myself with equally good results.  I usually send one
or two cards just to say "hello... hope you're doing well".   Everyone likes to have their mailbox filled with non-bill mail.  A note or two seems to "break the
ice".  I travel frequently and usually like to send post cards from non-local 
places; which creates something to talk about during the first call.  I've had 
enough successes and failures to be able to tell the level of interest from her
reaction to the cards/notes.  I never thought of including my phone number and
asking her to call me, perhaps the next time.
