The Enterprise is about 800 to 1000 ft. long - roughly the same length as a
1960's aircraft carrier. IN fact, it is almost exactly the same length as
The USS Enterprise, CVAN 65. There is a overlay of NCC 1701 on CVAN 65 in the
book "The Making Of Star Trek" by Steven Whitfeild(sp?).

At first Enterprise was to be 200 ft. long, but it grew before any
incriminating references were made in the show. It also got shuttle
craft, and the crew grew from 200 to 400.

If Enterprise was still thought to be 200 ft. long when the episode "THE
CORBOMITE MANEUVER" was filmed, the 'First Federation' ship is in the
right scale. Note that Gene had not thought up the 'United Federation
of Planets', yet, either. The Enterprise is operated under the authority
of the "United Earth Space Probe Agency". It appears that the 'First
Federation' was the seed which grew into the 'United Federation of
Planets'.
