The use of [sic] in letters by editors is usually cruel in my opinion.
I have seen it used many times to ridicule people who disagree with
the editor.   The policy should not vary according to the beliefs of
the letter-writer.

It was stated here on the net by one poster that if he sees a large
number of errors in a letter, he wonders about the ability to think
of the writer.  I would like to point out that this could be due to the
fact English is not the mother tounge of the author.
I hope you don't prejudge the mind of a foreigner just because they
are still learning the language.  Some of the world's greatest minds
can't write a word of English
