Solomon Grundy's on the Berkeley Marina has good fresh seafood and a wonderful black bean soup Further out, Mudd's in San Ramon (about 40 miles from SF) located on several acres of gardens where they get all their vegetables. They have a good French cooked (raw in the middle) salmon. Cliff House (lots of tourists) is fun for brunch in the omelet parlor. They have good clam chowder. Put your name on the list and stroll the beach for an hour. India House and Caravansery are good for Indian food. Modesto Lanzone's at Ghiradelli Square has excellent Italian food. There is also a good Hungarian restaurant at Ghiradelli Square, but I forget the name. Jackson Cafe in Chinatown has authentic Chinese food, as well as regular fare for very reasonable prices. Not too many tourists, but lots of local Chinese. Beethoven's on Union Street has good German food. Spenger's in Berkeley has very good, very cheap seafood, but it is extremely crowded. I've seen waits up to 2 hours! Around Berkeley there are all kinds of funky little places (Homemade Cafe on Sacramento St for breakfast, Mary's Place, Fondue Fred's, numerous coffee shops, and try Yogurt Park for an afternoon treat). I'm getting homesick -- I better stop now.
