A very detailed accounting of the operation of the VIC/C64 serial bus
is contained in an article in the July issue of COMPUTE! magazine. It
is written by Jim Butterfield, and is perhaps an update of his earlier
publication on the VIC serial bus (mentioned in an earlier news
article). There is too much in the article to reproduce here - and
besides, the article carries its own copyright notice, above and beyond
that of the magazine copyright...

P.S.  I'm about ready to give up COMPLETELY on the C64 audio cassette
interface. Even the Marantz portable doesn't work very well, - not
enough output level, I think. Besides, I'm not really very motivated to
get it working because I don't really WANT a cassette-based machine
anyway!
