My theory as to why early micros weren't very elegant is that they were
designed by hardware people as solutions to hardware problems. It
wasn't until they were used for a while and the amount of code written
for them became substantial that the software aspect became more important
than the hardware aspect. Its for the same reason that noone thought
to write compilers for the first micros.
