In England the Director is still the director and the Producer
is still the producer. Try looking at the credits on "Chariots
of Fire".

I used to think that the roles were different at the BBC but I recently
heard John Nathan Turner (producer of Dr. Who) describing his job and it
sounded awfully like a film producer's job.
