It's pretty interesting. Tom Wolfe makes a big deal about the Original Seven not really being the best pilots around. Scott Carpenter seems to admit as much in his chapter of We Seven. He described a zero-gee flight in the back seat of an F-100. The pilot flew a series of parabolic arcs, then turned over the controls to Carpenter. Carpenter could not maintain the proper speed and trajectory. He felt very embarrassed.
