I have a VW Jetta '82, and the entire dash seems to be made of plastic. The locking stereo covers I've seen all seem to be made of cast iron, or something which looks like it'd be too much trouble to break through. I'd expect this to encourage the thief to look for the weak link (i.e. the plastic dash) and rip the whole dashboard apart.
