For example in the Maryland suburubs of Washington DC, the way we are recommended to dial long distances calls is area code + number, HOWEVER, 1+area code + number WILL work. Those of us who recall when DDD (direct distance dialing) first went it we ALL had to dial the 1 first, and then when the equipment got more sophisticated, they no longer required it.
