Many of you looking for an enjoyable hobby combined with opportunities
to meet MOTOS may wish to try SQUARE DANCING. Although lots of square
dance clubs are primarily for couples, there are also a number of square
dance clubs for singles. To find out where they are and who to contact
for more information, see the "Yellowrock" (a small directory of singles
square dance clubs), the "National Square Dance Directory" (a large
directory of square dance, round dance, clogging, etc., clubs in general
-- those for singles are indicated as such), or someone at a square
dance apparel shop.

I started square dancing regularly almost six years ago and have never
regretted taking up that hobby. It provides a pleasant contrast to
computer programming, technical writing, etc. There is another pleasant
contrast compared with the campus where I work: There usually have been
more women than men at club dances I've gone to. (Men wondering where
the women are, take note!)

The club to which I belong gives an excellent opportunity for interested
people to try square dancing. There are three free introductory lessons,
beginning in August. (I assume that the membership and policies of this
club -- Swingin' Singles Square Dance Club, Albuquerque, NM -- are more
or less typical of such clubs nationwide.) People who remain interested
and are accepted on a first-come first-served basis (see below*) may take
approximately 35 more lessons at a charge of approximately one dollar per
lesson per person. After graduating from square dance class, dancers may
join the club for a similar low cost. *At Albuquerque, it seems that so
many more single women than single men want to take up square dancing
that the club restricts the relative numbers of men and women entering
the class. I can't be certain that the situation is the same in your
area. Whether you're a man or a woman, if you're really interested, it
is a good idea to sign up early.

If you're on a college campus, I expect that men interested in square
dancing aren't as scarce (compared with the number of women) and that
costs may be even less. Lessons may be more concentrated and may end
much sooner. (At Michigan State, where I first got into square dancing
regularly, we had approximately 10 lessons instead of around 35.)

Happy dancing!
