I bring my turntable, preamp, amp and speakers to the store and do a straight A/B. Then, I plug my speakers into their system, and the candidate speakers into mine, and do the A/B test again. This is how I selected my KEF 105.2 over Spendor BC III's. My next test will be against IMF References Mk VII. I have done this kind of testing to select other equipment as well, and it works fine, even for cartridges.
