Ever tried getting from the outer suburbs of D.C. to the District by public transit on a weekend - especially on a Sunday? (Last time I checked, the buses DON'T RUN from Reston to DC on Sunday!) I wish public transit were a lot better here. I wish the Metro ran to Dulles and I could take it into the District. (Hell, I wish I could live in the District and commute to Reston. I *like* cities. I *don't* like the suburbs.) But it isn't and it doesn't. Frankly, driving a car in the rain, or on a cold winter day, is no great fun but it beats the hell out of riding a bike under the same circumstances. And if you want to go a *long* distance to an area not served by trains or buses or airplanes, the car is the only alternative. It *is* the best solution to the transportation problem under some circumstances. (Europe and Japan have higher gas prices, roads less well suited for automobiles, and a better public transit system, and car ownership is *still* high - about 1 car for every 4 people. Either most of the developed world has been brainwashed or a car serves a useful purpose.) When I lived in Cambridge, I didn't have a car and didn't need one. Now that I live and work in the suburbs, I need one. Guy Harris {seismo,mcnc,we13,brl-bmd,allegra}!rlgvax!guy
