Message-ID: <2907@sri-arpa.UUCP> Date: Fri, 8-Jul-83 15:57:00 EDT Article-I.D.: sri-arpa.2907 Posted: Fri Jul 8 15:57:00 1983 Date-Received: Tue, 12-Jul-83 02:57:38 EDT Lines: 10 From: Larry SeilerActually, Tolkein took many names from Beowolf and other classical sources (Gandalf, all 13 dwarfs from The Hobbit, and (I believe) many of the names of heros & supernatural beings in Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion) (But I think he made up Bilbo and Frodo). So the "problem" of the name space running out is quite old. Perhaps names are like plots - they've all been used (in one form or another) and writing a story consists of making up new combinations, not in inventing an entirely new plot or entirely new names. -------
