However, it was never intended as a general- purpose processor; the reason it keeps its return addresses in registers is because there may be no RAM at all in the system (just the processor and some ROM). In fact, it's possible to design trivial 1802 systems at low cost for use in cars and cash registers and nuclear warheads. No one (aside from Popular Electronics and RCA itself) would seriously attempt to design a user-programmable micro around the 1802. --Bernie Roehl P.S. Similar comments apply to the Fairchild F8.
