As I understood the time travel to function:

Time ---->

S      X  earth at reception
p     /
a    /      signal
c    X------------------------X earth at transmission
e    \
|      \
V        \  signal wave front

The signal recieved was electromagnetic radiation caused by the sudden
appearance of energy from the future at the reception point. This
radiation attenuated by normal inverse-square laws. Since the Earth
moved quite a bit relative to the frame of reference the signal traveled
in, beyond a certain time in the past the signal would be attenuated
too much to be detected. The computer was used to filter the encoded
information out of the background noise.
