About the light-saber problem:
Maybe the light-sabers have different intensities?  Maybe the
"blade" has a certain shape such that it can cut in one direction
and simply 'subdue' in another (like a real sword).  I don't see
this as a problem; given anti-grav and other things, it should
be easy for them to do technologically.
