I both agree and disagree with Glenn Reid on the use of "lying to pick
up MOTOS". First of all, the terms "picking up" and "MOTOS" I find offensive
and inaccurate, but we all have the correct idea correctly in mind, I hope.
The other term is "lying"; we all believe lying is bad, generally, but are
the cases he recommends really lying, or do they essentially involve lying?

Re "Feigning interest" in heritage: even if one is truly uninterested in
heritage in general, the fact that you are interested in that person might
very well make his heritage more interesting to you, no?
If you are truly interested in the person, spending time around him should
be valued by you, even if the activity you are mutually engaged in doesnt have
an extreme value to you on its own.
Not only that, but you may actually develop a new interest that, in time,
will take own a value for you in its own right.
So I do not see anything wrong with expressing a polite interest in heritage
in this case, and I do not consider it feigning. On the other hand, I consider
it both stupid and dishonourable to truly feign an interest, independent of
the considerations I outlined above.

Re "accidentally" being in the "right place": if someone attracts you I dont
see why you cant arrange to "bump into him" if that increases your chances of
getting to know him. However, lying about your reasons for being there is
another issue, but isnt it easy to avoid that topic, or create another
*perfectly honest* reason? (true example: Someone I found attractive always
sat one night a week in a particular spot in the cafeteria. I arranged,
conveniently and honestly, to eat there around that time.) Again, I feel this
sort of thing can be done without lying, and also that it *should* be done
without lying.

One final comment on "interesting": almost everything is interesting, and it
is largely force of circumstance that produces the specific pattern of
interests that we all have. Remember this when you meet a MOTOS who has some
special interests that you have never really investigated.
