Right, JFK's statement "Ich bin ein Berliner" does not refer to sausage.
However, I believe that there was more trouble than with the pronunciation;
the usage "ein Berliner" refers to a type of cream puff (the pastry kind).
Had he said instead "Ich bin Berliner," all would have been well...
