I always interpreted that to mean that you can't write > PIPSIZ bytes to a FIFO/pipe, (an assumption borne out by experience piping `dd's together, as to funny behaviour with NDELAY set, I've never used NDELAY on a pipe, and would expect funny behaviour, being as NDELAY never seems to work with terminals anyway !
