I am looking for a 4 channel tape recorder for use in making home recordings.
I need "simul-sync" capability so I can overdub several instruments. So
far, I have seen two cassette type units by TEAC and FOSDEX, and there
are also several reel-to-reel type units by both companies (and probably
others). I prefer reel-to-reel.

I am looking for two basic things: performance and reliability. Performance
is easy - I will just look at the data sheets. Reliability is harder to
establish because manufacturer claims are hard to validate/invalidate.
One person I asked has a 15 year old TEAC (stereo reel-to-reel) which he
claims is virtually indestructable - that is one data point in TEAC's
favor. Are the current models (like the 3440) as good?

So my question to the net is: "Does anyone have direct experience with
any of these units?" Here's your chance to mail me a testimonial (or
warning) regarding whatever machine you bought and either loved or hated.

I will summarize any worthwhile data I get.
