Very interesting that a locking cover for a car stereo should work in a VW.
I have a VW Jetta '82, and the entire dash seems to be made of plastic.  The
locking stereo covers I've seen all seem to be made of cast iron, or something
which looks like it'd be too much trouble to break through.  I'd expect this
to encourage the thief to look for the weak link (i.e. the plastic dash) and
rip the whole dashboard apart.
