As I recall, Bombadil's purpose was to be a "friend in need" for the
hobbits when they entered the Old Forest and were captured by a tree.
According to a book I read (the Complete Guide to Middle-Earth),
Bombadil was considered to be a Maia, that is why he was not affected
by the Ring.

About the Sword of Shannara -- at first, it seems like a LotR copy,
but it gets better later in the book.  I liked the character of
Panamon Creel -- he reminds me of Han Solo a bit, being an adventurer.
