My understanding was that the speedup of the Cray-1 (I think it is dubbed XMP) was due to a relaxing of the machine's synchronous operation coupled with a higher yield of chips that operate in the 8 ns. range. I had thought that the Cray-2 was to be an improved *architecture* over the Cray-1. Is Cray telling why their new architecture could not out- perform the souped-up Cray-XMP?
