I will concur with whoever wrote the article to which this is a
followup. Never ask someone out in the first few minutes you get to know her.
If you are interesting, engaging, yourself, and a little bit on your toes,
you are well on your way. You become non-threatening to your prospective date
and much more at ease yourself if your objective is merely research, and not
to get a date (right away).

One that always works for me is to find out her last name. (remem-
bering her first name usually helps, too). You can feign interest in her(his)
heritage, pretend you might know her sister (some similarity) or some such.
Like: "Is your last name Richter--you look an awful lot like Karen Richter?"
Most likely, if you are making any headway at all, you can thus find out his/
her last name. This is actually much better than a phone number, because it
is much more likely to be the truth. Most people, especially students, are
really easy to track down by their names. You can then find out where she/he
lives, her/(no more his/her for sake of brevity) phone number, etc. The next
trick is to "accidentally" show up where she is likely to be, without letting
on that you knew already where she lived, etc., and amaze her by remembering
her name. If there's any chemistry at all between you at that point, you can
probably arrange *something*.
