Actually as I understand it, the phone company (i.e. Ma Bell) is working
on a method where maybe not everyplace will REQUIRE the 1 before the area
code, but all places will ACCEPT IT.  For example in the Maryland suburubs
of Washington DC, the way we are recommended to dial long distances calls
is area code + number, HOWEVER, 1+area code + number WILL work.  Those of
us who recall when DDD (direct distance dialing) first went it we ALL had
to dial the 1 first, and then when the equipment got more sophisticated, they
no longer required it.  It sounds like a giant step, backwards.
