About the origins of kludge/kluge, you might check Websters 
Ninth Collegiate Dictionary (just out).  It has 2 new features over the
older editions.

1) entries are tagged with the date of first use (much like
the OED)

2) There is an offer to answer questions of meaning/etymology
if you send a SASE to the company.
