    As a former paramedic I can tell You that Illinois state law ( and the
 laws of most other states ) prohibit even emergency vehicles from going over
 the speed limit. The law states that lights and sirens only give the vehicle
 the right of way over other traffic. I am not going to claim that police, 
 fire ect. dont speed (after all who's going to stop a firetruck) but rather
 point out that if they are they are breaking the law just as everyone else.
     As to the car behind you being a cop/fireman in a hurry, if he doesn't
 have a light or siren he shouldn't by law be trying to obtain the right of
 way. I also have some faith that very few cops/firemen would try something
 as stupid as that.
