vortex!lauren refers to the problems of driving in Boston.  Yes,
Boston is full of lousy drivers, but Lauren's problem is that he was
brought up in LA, allegedly land of the automobile, but truly, land of
the pedestrian.  The first time I drove in LA, I was astonished.
I'd be tooling down the street and some loser would actually walk right
in front of my car!  This isn't a matter of a line of cars on a busy
street, this is a matter of me going 35mph down an empty street, and
the pedestrian would rather have me stop my car for him to cross
rather than waiting for me to pass.  Utterly ridiculous.  I grew up in
the Bronx, where everyone crosses the streets one lane at a time, as
the cars allow.  The sane way.  This is not one of those ;-) articles.
