  I think the U.S. companies just gave up.  Last I heard, the only
manufacturer of receiving tubes in the U.S. was RCA.
  What do you see wrong with transistors?  They use less power, so
they run cooler -- providing their nearby components with a better
environment.  They are smaller, so they can be mounted on the board,
and with the extra space more sophisticated circuit designs become
practical.  By running cooler, they probably can produce less white
noise than tubes.  Oh, one more thing, in most cases they cost less.
