On some **stupid** systems in other parts of the country, you get an intercept message which asks you to "Please dial 1 before dialing number." From Laguna Beach one receives a **BUSY** signal. The subtlty of this indication to do something I think is unnecessary (dialing 1 within the area) led me to redial several times. Since I was calling a hotel switchboard, I eventually decided to consult the directory: "How do you use this turkey thing?" Dialing long distance within Europe requires removing some digits from the number as used within the country and adding others. Quantity and quality of digits deleted/added seems random. -- Mike Eager
