The law concerning what a check can be written on is this:

There ain't no law (that I know of).

The rule of thumb has always been that you may write a check on anything
that you can get a bank to accept. I have heard two news stories in
particular over the years on this subject. One involved a check written
on a piece of tree bark (accepted, no problem). The other involved a
dispute between two farmers, and one farmer wrote the other a check on
the back of a pig. The banker was eventually persuaded to come out to
the farm and cancell the pig on the spot using the regular bank stamp.
