A regular entered the diner at lunch and sat in the area being
worked by a new waitress. She took his order promptly, checked on
him often during the meal, was very polite (and cute besides), and
wound up with a three-cent tip for her trouble. One of the other
waitresses noticed her dismay and explained that Charley was always
like that and that the waitresses fought over who would HAVE to wait
on him every day.
The next day, however, the new waitress again rushed to wait on
Charley, and gave him even better service than the day before. Just
before she gave him his bill, she said casually, "You know, you can
tell a lot about a man by the way he tips." "Really?" said Charley
rather tentatively and defensively. "Sure," she replied, "take
yesterday for example. You left your three pennies in a very neat
line. That tells me that you are a neat and fastidious person."
"That's true," agreed Charley; "what else?" "Well, the first
penny told me that you were also a frugal person, and the second
penny told me that you are a bachelor." "Well, that's pretty amazing!",
said Charley. "You are right on the mark with all three of those.
And what did the third penny tell you?" "The third penny, Charley,"
she said with a smile as she handed him his bill, "told me that your
father was also a bachelor."
