A woman came over here to American to make a living
for her parentswho were still living in Europe.
She settled in New York.
She found things rather difficult over here,
and didn't really manage to save much money.
When she had been here a while, she received a
letter from her father telling her that her mother
was very sick, and could she please return home
immediately. She hadn't saved very much money,
and so asked one of her neighbors what she could
do.
Her neighbor suggested she go down to the docks,
and see if she could stowaway on a ship bound for
Europe. When she arrived there, she saw a bunch
of sailors standing about, and said to them,
"Could any of you help me? My mother's very sick
in Europe, and I have no money to get home."
One of the sailors said that he would be glad to
stow her away aboard his ship.
He managed to feed her every night, and kept her
in his cabin. A few nights later, he said,
"You know, I'm taking a pretty big risk keeping
you here." She answered, "I realize that, and
I'm willing to do 'anything' for you."
Needless to say, the two became lovers the following
night. Another few days later, the captain of the
ship goes for a midnight stroll, and hears strange
noises coming from one of the cabins.
He looks in, and catches the couple in the act.
the woman cries "Look, my mother is very sick in Europe,
and I have no money to get home to see here. This sailor
took me aboard to help me get home."
The captain exclaimed "But this is the Staten Island Ferry!!"
