Title: faster vi

I'm running 2.8 bsd on an 11/23, and would like to use ex
in its visual (vi) mode. Unfortunately, the version that I have
(3.6) runs very slowly. It looks to me as if the speed could be
improved by rearranging the overlays to take advantage of the fact
that I only care about vi. This may also require some hacking of
the code to get the new overlays to fit: one possibility would be
to get rid of code that handles smart terminals, since I don't
have any.

Has anyone had success in speeding up vi to run on an
overlayed, non-separate i&d machine? If so, I would be very interested
in the details.
