I think a good way to approach this subject is to cast it a
less serious-sounding light.  After all, single people of
one sex can have married friends of the opposite sex.  For
example, approach the subject to your friend in a humorous
manner such as, "You'll have to excuse me for a moment, my
wife likes me to call her if I'm going to be late coming
home.  Doesn't your husband mind when you get in?"  If she
avoids giving even a hint if she's married, ask her more
directly.  If she's married, you now know.  If she isn't,
she now knows where your values lie and may even respect 
and like you more.  If she lies, well, what can you do?  I
think it is hard for anybody to resent an inquiry such as
your's if they have a smile on their face - that is why I
suggest a little humor.
