Title: Cassette problem

I am hoping that someone can suggest a likely cause for the following
problem I've recently encountered.

My 3-year-old Sony cassette deck is unable to record on any of three
5-year-old Memorex chromium dioxide tapes. The VU meters register an
adequately strong signal while recording, but on playback the signal is
barely audible.

The deck records just fine on all newer tapes, suggesting
the problem is not in the deck.
However, a bulk eraser can successfully erase the Memorex tapes, and
a friend's Aiwa cassette deck can record on them well, suggesting the
problem is not with the tape.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
