The recording level on a tape deck appears to be a function of the deck and the tape being recorded. Apparently the various parameters of a recording system are optimized for a particular tape. I have a Hitachi deck; they own Maxell therefore the deck is optimized for Maxell Udxl tapes. Hitachi also OEMs Maxell tapes under their own label. I have never succeeded in saturating my UDXL I tapes with the aforementioned deck, even when recording classical orchestral pieces. I usually play the loudest section of music on the album and set the level between +3 and +5 db. It gets harder when you can't preplay what you're taping. Best to guess and not fiddle with it.
