Well, (and you knew there had to be a "well" clause, didn't you...) after careful listening, I hear several references to the Marquesas Islands, which are, yes indeed, in the South Pacific... which would lead me to the following: (1) The song refers to the constellation, or (2) The song refers to the constellation and the boat. I know this is horribly trivial, but I really did wonder about it... OK, you proponents of the boat theory, what do you say now? (Better put, why would CSN be singing about a constellation?
