The recording level on a tape deck appears to be a function of the deck
and the tape being recorded.  Apparently the various parameters of a
recording system are optimized for a particular tape.  I have a Hitachi
deck; they own Maxell therefore the deck is optimized for Maxell Udxl
tapes.  Hitachi also OEMs Maxell tapes under their own label.
	I have never succeeded in saturating my UDXL I tapes with the
aforementioned deck, even when recording classical orchestral pieces.
I usually play the loudest section of music on the album and set the
level between +3 and +5 db.  It gets harder when you can't preplay what
you're taping.  Best to guess and not fiddle with it.
