Once upon a time there was held the Grand Universal Philosophers Convention.
The event took place at a small hotel on the French Riviera. In fact, the
hotel had only 100 rooms, but in a classic display of overbooking, all of the
great philosophers of all time were invited to attend. As the philosophers
begin to wander in on registration day, the rooms fill up until all 100 are
taken, with an hour still left to go before registration closes. The desk
clerk is sweating it out, but no one shows up until -- you guessed it -- at
the very last moment, who should walk in but Aristotle! Now the clerk is at
a loss about what to do, but he realizes that better minds than his are
available to work on the problem, so he simply tells Aristotle the truth.
Aristotle says, "No sweat, I don't mind sharing a room. Just let me go
around and talk to my colleagues, and I'm sure that I can convince someone
to let me bunk with him." So Aristotle goes from room to room in the hotel,
looking for a hospitable arrangement. After a while he comes to Descartes's
room. When Rene answers the door, Aristotle states, "Sir, I think you are
in my room." Descartes responds, "I think not," and promptly disappears.
