I don't know about Jimmy Walker's ghost, but I do know that Gay Street in
the West Village (NYC) is fairly normal, running one short block from
Waverly to Christopher with only one turn. Waverly St., on the other hand,
seems to be the one that hou5a!mat was thinking of: it intersects itself,
creating a corner of Waverly and Waverly. A map:

				  CC
		     WW CC
		       WW CC GG
WW CC GG legend: C = Christopher St.
			  CCW G W = Waverly St.
			CC WW G G = Gay St.
		      CCWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
		    CC
		  CC

The extension of Waverly (diagonal in this map) did not used to be part of
Waverly: it was named something like Industry St. or Factory St. in 19c.
Waverly, of course, was named as a reference to Sir Walter Scott's work.
