First let me say that as an avid advanced Downhill skier, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It is not as strenuous as one might think (less than running!) and quite an experience to ski uphill!! (Amazing!) Most downhill techniques can be easily transferred over. Cross country skiing to Downhill skiing is analogous to Raquetball compared with Tennis - easy to pick up fundamentals. Some students in the class who had never really been on snow before picked up cross country skiing very well the first day! Anyway a recommended text for Oregon trails is: Newman, Doug & Sally Sherrard. Oregon Ski Tours. Beaverton: The Touchstone Press, 1973. Note that it's kind of old and many forest service roads have been re-numbered but supposedly the descriptions are excellent. Maybe the authors have updated? I have a list of "Oregon Marked Cross Country Ski Trails" that I can provide if requested by direct mail. Former Alpine Skier who now skiis Nordic on Sat., Alpine on Sun., Jay Su hp-pcd!jason
