Most of the answers I've recieved to the "telepathy
problem" -- how do you know what a person thinks of you -- have
been the same: ask the person. It's not that I don't appreciate
everyone's help, but there are certain difficulties with this.

How does one ask? "Do you like me?"

Better yet, if you do find a way to ask, how do you know
if you can believe the answer you get? I know many people who
would simply rather not hurt my feelings. If you ask a girl out
three or four times and each time she says she's busy, is she
hoping you'll take the subtle hint that she isn't interested, or
is she really often busy? (The girl in question is a college
student and a member of the symphony orchestra. Both are time
sinks, to be honest.) If you ask your date if she is having a
good time and she says "yes" with only minimal enthusiasm, it
could be that she is actually having a pleasant time, as opposed
to either an exciting one or a boring one; likewise it could mean
she is bored and, rather than make you feel responsible for it,
simply get the evening over with and make it a point not to
answer your phone messages anymore.

I don't mean to sound pessimistic; I'm sure all these
questions have anwers. Any ideas?
