After some messing around I got samples of AMD 8251As. These work perfectly
for me. I would guess the AMD 9551s had bugs in them. I am told the 8251As
are from Intel masks, so there's very little AMD can do to mess them up.

Thanks to everyone who sent or posted their thoughts. I agree most
with wb2!tcb: AMD didn't know how to make MOS parts. They may have
cleaned up their act, but they very clearly had problems in the past.
However, I think their bipolar parts are great!

(I did talk to the Marketing person and the Applications engineer at AMD
about the 9551, they assured me they had never heard of such a problem.)
