Sometimes, it seems to me that a lot of people "shy away".
My guess is that most of them are afraid to open up to others
in even a simple way (such as smiling and saying "hi").
It is threatening to them. Others, I'm sure, are merely
preoccupied. I've found that by forcing the issue
(going out of my way to say hello often even though there
is little response for instance) I have had some success
at establishing a little bit of communication with some.
A lot of folks seem to respond if you take the first step.
I used to assume that nonoresponsive people were cold and
indifferent and didn't like me. I've found that they are
usually just shy (of course, some DO hate me!).
This probably belongs in net.social as well.
