I have been in similar situations myself. If a woman makes no overt gestures
that she would rather not be with you, or if what you think might be "get
lost" messages are very, very subtle at best, my guess is that you have at
least a reasonable chance. There is probably something else going on in
parallel that makes her uncomfortable. Perhaps she is also seeing someone
else, and doesn't know if she should
tell you yet, or she has just recently broken up with her boyfriend and is
therefore a little gun-shy, or something like that. In short, you are in
the balance somewhere. At this point, the more you try to press her for an
answer, the more likely the answer is to be no. This is your chance to shine.
Just assume that she thinks you are great, but is a little reserved for one
reason or another. Give her your best show, tell her all your best jokes,
and be totally relaxed, fun, and what-the-hell attitude. If you get along,
and if she has fun, you are well on your way to finding out what she thinks
of you. If you clam up and wonder, she will pass you by.

Whatever your strongest points are, give them a try with a vengeance, and if
you get nothing, then forget it. Ask her out without giving her a chance to
say no. If she says she is going to go to the library to study, find her in
the library, give her a carnation, and demand that she accompany you for a
McDonald's hamburger right then, on the spot. If she has any hankering that
you are a decent guy, she will be blown away at your spontaneity and you are
off and running. Don't let her out of the net, at least once, and just try
to force her to have fun, as though she were your best friend and she had
just heard that her dog died and needed cheering up. Not like a drippy suitor
who wants to kiss her ass and win her favor. Use rotten language, tip heavily,
be questionable, funny, almost ungentlemanly, and just have a hell of a time.
One way or another, at least *you* will have fun that night, and you will
have a really good idea whether or not she likes you....
