In response to the article on unfriendly women, there are a number of
possible explanations concerning such behavior:
1. many women feel (myself included) that it is inappropriate to
generate a "man-woman" type interaction in the workplace. we've
been trying for a long time to be taken more seriously. Talking to
men we don't know is sometimes taken as a sign of flirtation. As
soon as a woman ( or man ) has some reason to get to know someone,
saying hello is no longer "flirting".
2. many women may feel uncomfortable talking to strange men anyway.
3. after trying to be friendly to others (men or women) and not
getting any response, some women ( and men) give up trying. that was
the case when i first came to work at BTL.Many people here seem locked
up in cocoons. When i do say hello to strangers, they look surprised.

I'd be interested in any other responses. ricki simon (X0622).
