After cutting through the typical Ellison rodomontade his column on the matter (from the series THE GLASS TEAT in the Los Angeles FREE PRESS) notes that he still gets calls from the Chuck Baris (? sp?) agency (every time they get a new secretary or manager somebody suggests going to the man who was once called the most eligible bachelor in Hollywood). He says that he got a look at the girl in question and she was sufficiently awful that he did his best to do his worst (very few people claim that Harlan is a gentleman). His worst included the line about rats (but you forget the formal wear and the champagne) and a final explosion (triggered by the girl's asking each guy what he would say to get her to go out with him) beginning with the suggestion that she take a sun bath in a cyclotron. In practice, my understanding is that Ellison is rarely lacking for female companionship of whatever degree he's interested in; knowing his enemies and friends, I'd say his good qualities far outweigh the bad---but his methods aren't recommended for anyone who doesn't have the money and reputation to travel on.
