This is in reaction to a recent posting by Tim Maroney.

"The net uses mostly spoken English, not written. Spoken
English uses profanity. In idle chats, such words are hardly
    uncommon."

I agree that spoken English is the basis for the communication
done on the net. However, profanity is not a requist part of the
English language. A surprizing amount of communication can be
done without the benefit(?) of verbal sewage.

I would hope (though I am apparently wrong) that, by the time people
have access to an academic/business network as this, the people
submitting to the net would have passed through the stage of
adolescence during which grossly poor behaviour is mistaken for
masculinity/femininity. Judging from some of the recent submissions
to the net, unfortunately, many of its users are still in a viral
form of adolescence, characterized by a complete lack of concern
for exhibiting even a modicum of civilized behavior.

"I refuse to use some unreal grade-school language
because some candyass admin type lives in some perverse
     dream world. Grow up!"

You have it backward. THIS, outside of the University, is the
REAL world. This is where people will be reacting to you and to
your behavior and deciding things of importance to YOU -- things
like "... should we hire this foul mouthed character?" and "... why
should we trust this oaf with this big order?" and ...

I must echo the final exhortation of Mr. Maroney back to him, with the
hope that, with the latent high level of intelligence he has begun to
exhibit, he will outgrow the need for oral bowel movements. When that
happens, as I trust it will, he will then be WELCOME in the society
of civilized people, not just merely tolerated.

By the way, if the above comments provoke in anyone an urge to post
or mail additional net-verbal abuse, please do me the courtesy of
routing it to /dev/null instead. There is no need to continue
littering the net with more of that trash.
