For a really scathing attack on conventional biblical piety, see
Mark Twain's "Letters From the Earth". I won't offer any excerpts,
because once he gets going, it's hard to stop him. This goes way
beyond mere poking fun. It justifies the wonderment that a physics
professor of mine had that Twain could remain such a sentimental
American favorite after expressing such bitterly anti-religious
sentiments. I suppose his continued favored status is a reflection
of the same dislocation between content and perception that Twain
points out in this essay.
