Title: Definition for system

I need a definition for "system."

The one I have been working with is: "A system is an artifact
consisting of interacting integrated component technologies
designed to meet a perceived need."

Comments so far: It may not be an artifact
"Integrated" is a useless buzzword in this context
                 Ditto "perceived"
"component" means something different to EEs

...leaving: "A system is an artifact or mental construct consisting
of interacting technologies designed to meet a need."

Ugh. For reference, defn 1 in my American College Dictionary gives
"an assemblage or combination of things or parts forming a complex
or unitary whole."

I need a definition that will be meaningful in the context of talking about
systems design or systems engineering. When I say, "My tool will dramatically
improve your ability to design systems," I want the definition to apply.

Help would be appreciated -- by direct mail or to the net. Thanks.
