THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ORAL *OR* CANCER - WHAT PRICE A CURE?

The following article is reprinted in part from the Providence Evening
Bulletin (1/18/83). What I find particularly interesting is the
specific cost/partner Jesus came up with, and the fact that the
conversation lasted seven hours. No further comment.

LETTER SAYS GOD TO GIVE HIM PLAN FOR CANCER CURE

(LA Times) In one of the boldest religious fund-raising appeals yet,
evangelist Oral Roberts is sending out millions of letters saying that
Jesus appeared to him and told him God had chosen Roberts to find the
cure for cancer.

This "supernatural breakthrough," according to Roberts' letters and
messages on his television program this month, will occur at Roberts'
yet-unfinished Tower of Faith research center in Tulsa, Okla. Roberts
said the Lord told him to ask his hundreds of thousands of "prayer
partners" to send $240 each to complete the center so researchers there
can find cures for cancer and "other dread diseases."

Roberts, saying that cancer is "the work of the devil," appealed for
the donations on the basis of what he described as a seven-hour-long
conversation he had with Jesus, and added that the dialogue "is still
continuing."

[At this point the article describes a fund raising letter of two years
ago in which Roberts reported a "vision" of a 900-foot-tall Jesus.]

In the current 12-page appeal letter, Roberts describes his "new
marching orders" from the Lord. He quotes the Lord as telling him:

"I would not have had you and your partners build the 20-story research
tower unless I was going to give you a plan that will attack cancer in
both a physical and spiritual way that is different than any cancer
research programs in the world today. I did not have you build the
tower debt-free in its present stage just to have it stand empty."
