"assume the contrary" ...  Now really, what happens if we lose that law of
the excluded middle?  We'll be stuck with boring numbers!  Any of you 
mathematicians with an interest in history?  What about the debate early
on in the 20th century about "assuming the contrary?"  I'll scrounge
and see if I can enlighten.  This IS trivia, after all.
