I don't know this first-hand, but the "folk-wisdom" when I
was in grad school was that companies like single women and married
men.  The rationale given (and this does NOT reflect my own opinions)
was that each of those categoreis was more stable (than married
women or single men, respectively).  The idea is that married
women are likely to have children and therefore leave, either temporarily
or permanently.  Single men, on the other hand, have no ties to hold
them anyplace and therefore are much more likely to move on quickly.

As I said, I don't agree with this view.  But it does sound believable
as something management would buy.
