Yes, I too have noticed the problems in running LMODEM through a TAC.
It seems that the TAC software does not respond to certain commands
correctly when they are coming from the host end. Specifically, LMODEM
can't always talk the TAC into entering binary transmission mode.

I don't know anything more specific about the problem, but I have hit
upon an empirical solution. After giving LMODEM a command, while it it
trying to convince the TAC to enter binary mode, tickle the TAC from
your end by saying @B O S  @B I S  (Binary Output Start, Binary
Input Start). The TAC will listen to you, and LMODEM will be happy.
This seems to always work.
