In response to Larry Card's query about "The Angry Planet":
John Keir Cross was the author, and it must have been published
before 1948. I remember it as the first novel that I ever read all
the way through. It opened with a hokey "The following manuscript
was found in the laboratory of Professor ... , who disappeared
mysteriously and has never been seen since." At the time, I
seriously wondered whether the story might actually be true, and
even considered doing a search through back-issue newspapers to
see if they mentioned the professor's disappearance.
