I've heard of an interesting setup which might be a little cheaper
than the Vadic VA4401P/VA1604 solution. Using standard Bell 202 2400 baud
half-duplex synchronous modems, and Micom Micro-500 front ends, you end up
with a 2400 baud async error-free interface. Total cost is about $1500.
Cheaper than the Vadic solution, with the added bonus of error-free
transmission (a real plus when used from home, let me tell you!). The only
catch is that if both ends try to transmit at a full 2400 baud, flow
control will be needed, because there is really only 2400 bits/second of
throughput, not 4800 as required for a totally async 2400 baud connection.
No problem for uucp or CPU<=>TTY communications.
