We are currently doing an experimental Smalltalk implementation on the Sun,
based on some novel ideas not described in the Book but supporting the same
virtual machine and able to run the same system. This implementation is a
feasibility study for internal use only. However, its performance should give
outside implementors some idea of what is possible on the Sun, or on the 68000 in
general. We expect to have a preliminary system running about 4 months from
now.

We plan to implement BitBlt both with and without use of the Sun hardware
assistance, and publish the results of the comparison.

Parties interested in obtaining a Smalltalk license and system release, for
implementation on workstations or any other hardware, should call John Shoch at
(415)494-5835.
