In 1979 at MIT, I managed the "rebuilding" of an 11/45 system bought from
American Used Computer.  It was purchased a year before I got involved.
The way I heard the story, American had guaranteed the machine would work
for 30 days, and that it was assembled and thoroughly tested at their site
before shipping.  The boards were poorly chosen (compatability), were out
of ECO revision to various degrees, and several parts of the machine did
not function.  They did not honor their warranty.

Rand bought a DH-11 from American (which I heard about after the fact), and
paid DEC about $5,000 to make the strange collection of boards work.  Of
course, this may all be idle rumor...
