As long as somebody is quoting the Texas suggestion of freezing the
Yankees, we should define just who a Yankee is. The following is culled
from remarks in the Boston PHOENIX:

To anyone from Britain (most of the continental Europeans don't know the
term at all) anybody from the United States is a Yankee, although they might
make an exception for Eskimos or displaced Polynesians.
South and South-Central US calls anyone above the Mason-Dixon line a
Yankee, while the rest of the country tends to limit the term to New
Englanders (or at least people east of the Hudson River).
New Englanders will say that Yankees come from Vermont.
Vermonters say the only known Yankees are living in small towns.
Small-town Vermonters insist that Yankees are the ones who eat apple pie
with cheddar cheese---for breakfast.
And what about the small-town Vermonter who has pie with cheese for
breakfast? He'll point to his neighbor and tell you there's a real Yankee---
eats his breakfast pie with a knife.
