Is it possible to write a formatter to run on the WD 1771 floppy
disk controller that will produce disks readable by the WD 1793?
If so, has someone written one that I could obtain?

It is my understanding that the 1793 is pickier than the 1771
about what it finds in the inter-record gaps, and that the gap
contents are under control of the formatter program. I have a
Tarbell single-density disk controller, while my dad has obtained a
CCS 2422, he can't read any disks formatted on my controller.

Thanks,
