It does offer full automation, interchangable lenses, and good quality - if you don't need to enlarge the pictures too much (above 5x7?). Another possibility, although much heavier, is the Canon AE-1 Programmed. The programming is the same as the A-1 and that works quite well. Canons seem to be well built and the optics are excellent. Prices are not too bad, considering the quality.
