I saw AOaaG with my wife recently and we both enjoyed it. In talking it
over afterwards we had different opinions of what the main theme of
the movie was. I saw it as a description of the turning point in a man's
life, a rite of passage if you will, with basic changes in the man's
character being the core of the film. My wife felt the growth and
ultimate fulfillment of an unlikely romance to be primary. To me this
suggests that the film has a lot going for it. The other angle on this
is that I found the romance a bit unbelieveable and somewhat of the
white knight rescues damsel in distress vein, while my wife thought the
naval training was overdrawn and unrealistic.
