I just finished talking to a *knowledgable* book dealer about this
book, which was written by Stephen Donaldson (of Thomas Covenant fame).
Apparently, the publisher of his now-famous Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever
(first) trilogy edited out about 80 pages or so from the Ill-Earth War,
claiming it was 'excessive'. Donaldson got the 80 pages published by
another publisher as a limited edition novella. My question is:
has anyone in netland read Gilden Fire, and if so, could you summarize?
Is it important to the story? The book dealer claimed it was not
critical, but was important to Donaldson aficionados; I don't think
I am such, however, I don't like to miss out on any details in a series
such as this one. I also don't want to shell out 12 bucks for an 80 page
hardcover novella, unless I know something more about it in advance.
