Msg 162 is 16 line(s) on 09/17/82 from DAVE HARDY
to DICK MEAD about HALF-HEIGHT FLOPPIES

Dick, At CDP, we've evaluated the half-height Shugart,
Tandon, Mitsubishi, and NEC drives, and I'd rate them
(Best first): Shugart, Mitsubishi, Tandon, NEC. So far,
the Shugarts win hands down, but are the most expensive
(at about $550 each). The Mitsubishis are the cheapest
at abour $450 each.

The Shugarts have just been introduced, and still have
a few minor problems, but our last shipment seemed to be
all OK. (I'm running them here on a DJ2D).

The Tandons seem to have a very high failure rate in the
motor control circuits. They also will "take off" on
occasion and run the motors at full speed.

The 2 japanese drives (Mit, NEC) seem to be copies of
the Shugart as far as operation goes, but are a lot harder
to make work. More info (ad nauseam) if you want it.
