This is really for sdcsvax!philabs!jgc at Berkeley but I don't know how
to reach him through ARPA. I would appreciate it if anyone knows the secret.

Jim Constantine,
We also run 4.1BSD on two vaxen. (4meg,2RM05,1DMAX,2DZ11). Our system
runs fine and stays up almost indefinitely with no hand-holding. Any
crashes that we do have tend to be readily explainable. We are runing
essentially vanilla 4.1BSD. The above does not imply that we have never
had a problem--quite the contrary. However, all serious problems of the
nature you describe have always (eventually) been traced to hardware
problems--usually intermittent. There are many features on the VAX which
are used by either UNIX or VMS but not both and who knows what the diag-
nostics use. Has the problem existed since you started running 4.1 or
did it start happening suddenly? If you don't get any sympathy from your
DEC service people, contact the UNIX group at DEC in New Hampshire.
