I use one regularly to download from the SYSOP system at 600 baud. The 103 limit is only a spec limit. It really depends on the quality of the line and whether the modem demod can handle it. I have even been able to make an accoustic modem run (in a local loop) at 9600 baud, but it drifted some, and of course was "dumb". The Hayes Smartmodem (103) had statements to the effect there is "NO WAY" to run it faster than 300, so they probably have a hard/ firm-ware limit. Specs for the modem ic's in two modems I have rate the chips to 600 baud (motorola 14412 6860 I think). I have talked to Cermetek about their new 212A modem and I am told they have no hard/firm-ware limit to 103 baud rate so I plan to find one locally and try it at 600, if it works I just may go that way. Thanks for the info.. -- DICK -------
