Sunday, 15 August 1982 (NYT) -- Lon Haldeman is a 24-year-old from Harvard,
Illinois, who works as a store manager in a bicycle shop. Yesterday morning
he arrived in Manhattan on his bicycle after covering 2976 miles and crossing
the United States in 9 days 20 hours 2 minutes to capture the first Great
American Bike Race.

Haldeman, who started out with three other riders in Santa Monica, California,
betterd a mark he set last year in an individual effort by 24 hours in covering
the same distance. "All I thought about in the last six days was going to
sleep," Haldeman said. He averaged 300 miles and 14,000 calories a day. To
train for the event, Haldeman said he commuted the 84-mile distance to work
by bicycle. "I have a paper route, too," he said.

The time for each of the riders:

Lon Haldeman 9 days 20 hours 2 minutes
John Howard 10 days 10 hours 59 minutes
Michael Shermer 10 days 19 hours 54 minutes
John Marino 12 days 7 hours 37 minutes
