Having been brought up in a number of different places on the east
coast, my pronunciation may be a bit schizophrenic, but I was taught
that for a number of words, such as 'route', the pronunciation changes
according to whether the word is being used as a verb or not - i.e.,
'route 99' rhymes with 'root', but to 'route interconnect' rhymes
with 'out'. Another interesting point about 'route' is that 'router'
always has the 'out' pronunciation, rather than 'root'.
