I had exactly the same problem.  It occurred in spurts, say 4 times in
one day then nothing for several weeks.  Diagnostics found nothing.
I called my friendly DEC service manager and got the following instructions
from him to get more info for field service:

Run with auto-restart OFF, when it dies type this on the console:

	EX SP			(Examine the Stack Pointer)
	EX/V @/N:100		(And 100 locations on the stack(?))
	EX 20003000/N:3		(Then the memory controller regs.)
	EX 18			(The SBI Silo)
	EX 1B			(And SBI Fault)

Luckily for me, it crashed one day while I was in the machine room.
I slapped in "MICRO DIAG #1" as fast as I could and it found a bad
board (M8227).  It was replaced and I haven't seen the problem since
(that was May 11, keep your fingers crossed).  I never used the above
instructions so I cannot vouch for them.
