Each turn you take uses up one unit of food. Running across a room takes one turn per space. In order to not get hungry as often, one important thing is to search rooms efficiently. The more you bounce off the walls of the room, the more food you eat. Searching diagonally tends to cover more ground in the same amount of time. Of course, resting and searching also take up turns, so you can't afford to do too much resting and searching if you're starving. Wearing most rings causes food to be consumed faster, so you get hungry faster. Some rings eat more than others. Slow indigestion reduces your food consumption rate by 1/2 of the normal rate. Rogue was tuned for a 24x80 screen. If you have a bigger screen you have to explore more area and tend to get hungry faster. If you have a smaller screen you don't get hungry as often, but other problems arise. (Your inventories can become unreadable, and you don't have as much manuvering room.) Later versions of rogue try to compensate for screen size, and won't go above a certain size.
