That one had a split-image rangefinder, and fully automatic exposure; the latter is particularly important, as he does not want to fiddle with shutter speeds, f-stops, etc. (It also has an automatic flash exposure mechanism -- it couples the aperature to the focusing ring, according to the guide number for the flash -- but that isn't important any more, as he now has a Vivitar automatic flash.) The replacement should probably be an SLR; the main criteria should be ease of use for someone who wants to take pictures, but isn't interested in any of the technical aspects. Does anyone have any suggestions? (Note: I'd be particularly interested in comments on the Nikon EM -- does it fit my specs? I have a Nikon FE, which means that he could borrow some of my lenses.) --Steve Bellovin
