VICE snapshot converter needed [message #351698] Thu, 31 August 2017 08:06

well, you've guessed it. For some reason, the vsf format is constantly
changing with every new version of VICE and there is no way to use
snapshots that were created with older versions.

Why is this? Is it really so hard to ensure backwards compatiblity for
snapshot files? Seeing as a vsf file is nothing more than a snapshot of
the whole memory and some bits of metadata, I cannot believe it is
impossible to make older snapshot files run in a newer version of VICE.

In another forum I read that the new version of VICE (3.1 I believe) will
now warn the user if he's trying to load an older snapshot file. Well,
that's not exactly a very helpful warning message, is it? Why doesn't it
simply convert the old format to the new format and let you run it? Or
how about writing a vsf-converter so that people can still use the
snapshot files they created earlier?
