Indeed, there was a production loosely based on the book "The Adolescence
of P-1". It was televised on the "Wonder Works" Public Television show. It
looked to be made in Canada and was apparently shot on-location there. I
was not very happy with the result - in the original book, P-1's creator
was an adult systems programmer who wrote P-1 earlier in his life when in
college at the University of Waterloo. In the film version, P-1's writer
is given as a high-school kid who is known my the name of "hacker" (no
doubt inspired by all of the recent media hype over high-school crackers).
The movie version was also remarkably deficient in details and glossed over
many aspects of the original book. Still, it was obviously an adaptation of
the original.
