Well,I haven't seen any activity here for a long time, so I thought I would
throw my two cents worth in.

As many of you may remember, I had requested that phone books be checked for
others of my surname. I collected several answers, 8 to be exact, that fit
the bill. I posted (via US SNAIL) letters to each of the eight in early
January. Each letter requested a response.

Today is 1/30/84. No responses yet. I wonder how the people who received
the letters felt about them. I had passed the letters by a few others
before sending them in an effort to make sure that were reasonably inoffensive.
I still have hope that someday I will receive some response to the letters.

How about the rest of you. How are your searches going?

Ah, I just thought of a good question to ask: My mother-in-law called me
last night. She had been going through her mother's old scrap books and found
two photos taken at 1st and madison in Portland, OR about 1850. It appears
that they are of her great-grandfather and his brother.

Now, it is known that the family settled in Kansas finally, that my m-i-l's
grandfather was born in Illnois, and that the family originally came from
England. The question would then be: what are the chances that the family
went from England to IL to KA via Portland OR?? Or better yet, what were
two guys who ended up living in IL by 1865 doing in Portland in ~1850.
Any ideas? Is it possible that they went west for gold, and came home
instead of finding any? If so, why OR instead of CA? I realise that OR
had a small gold rush, but I thought it was a little later. Any ideas
or suggestions would be welcome.

thanx.............
