9. Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Box Office: ??
RT Score: 57%
Episode #: 9
Summary: The sequel trilogy ended with whimper despite the best efforts of co-writer/director J.J. Abrams. Abrams was clearly pulling out all the stops for what he intended to be an epic finale to the Star Wars saga. Rise of Skywalker is undeniably beautiful to behold and features more than its fair share of eye-popping action. But it’s over-stuffed to the point where it’s nearly impossible to get invested in what’s going on.

I expect a lot of disagreement over my relatively low ranking. I have the end of the sequel ranked lower than the final installment in the prequel trilogy. Some will consider that blasphemy. Overall, I think Disney’s sequels are better movies than Lucas’ prequels but I have to give George credit for attempting something new. The sequels got ambitious in their middle chapter which resulted in a lot of squawking from disgruntled fan bois. You can smell the panic in Rise as Abrams walks back just about everything that happened in the previous movie. I’m deducting points for creative cowardice and excessive fan service on this one.

Rise of Skywalker was made for a certain kind of fan. The kind that just wants to endlessly recycle the movies they enjoyed when they were kids. If seeing Billy Dee Williams play Lando one more time is more important to you that character development or a coherent plot, Rise of Skywalker is for you. No one else need apply.
