“One Punch Man” is back with Season 2 and I’m a happy anime viewer because of this. This season has a different studio doing the animation and it is now based upon the Murata Yuusuke collaboration version of OPM so it is different from the first season which was based solely upon One’s web manga. (BTW – One has started up the OPM web manga again after a two year hiatus.)

So while the first episode of S2 felt different and proceeded at a more deliberate pace I still found it to be a lot of fun. This part of the story focusses more upon Saitama’s world than on Saitama himself, so the viewer gets to see more of One’s cynical viewpoint, albeit dressed more like a shounen fighting story thanks to Murata’s influence. The punchlines are still there though, just hidden a bit more.

So two important things happened in the first episode. First, Saitama found out about the real King. Second, Genos won his first major solo battle, although as usual he sustained a lot of damage. And these two happenings have significant future implications (which probably won’t show up in Season 2).

I’m glad that OPM is back and I’m looking forward to watching it every week. My initial rating is A.
