“Muhyo to Rouji no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho” finished today with episode 12, however there was a “to be continued” note at the end and since the manga ran around 136 chapters I assume that this shounen magical battle fantasy will be back at some time in the future. However, I won't be back watching it.

I followed “Muhyo and Rouji” this season because I wasn't watching many series and I decided that I would try a standard sort of shounen series for the first time in a while. The series started out fairly typical: a not-very-sociable genius exorcist and his relatively incompetent cry-baby assistant run an exorcism-for-hire service. Muhyo is a licensed exorcist who has a degree in magical law. His assistant Rouji is trying to get his official assistant status. They initially run into some fairly ordinary law-breaking spirits and dispose of those spirits easily, but in the background a very strong evil force is lurking with evil intentions and sets up a long conflict in the second half of the series.

The show has the usual mix of silly humour and talky action. The main problem for me was Rouji whose crybaby routine got old really quickly. I know that this is fairly rote in shounen stories but I really wanted to see some character development. Unfortunately none occurred. I even went and skimmed though the later parts of the manga to see if Rouji changed at all, but I was disappointed to find out that he didn't.

While the series was better than just sitting there and watching a screen saver for a half an hour each week there wasn't anything in the writing, characters or animation that made me look forward to seeing more in the future.. So my final rating is C and I won't be back for any continuation.
