A woman who hand-forges custom knife blades is as strange and rare and
obsolete as a typewriter repairman? The journalist needs to get out
more.
The custom knifemaking guild (not fraternity 'cause it's not
male-only) is quite large and growing, albeit slowly as the criteria
for admission demand that the applicant's work produce excellent, not
just pretty, blades. Yes, many of those makers cut and grind the
blades from flat stock but many forge them, too. I have a lovely
pattern-welded (aka Damascus) folder made by a friend who just passed
the guild tests this summer.
