“Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau” is an adaptation of a shoujo sci-fi manga. In some odd desert world a tribe of people sail a sea of sand in a giant mud brick island-ship. Most of the people on the mud-ship have psychic powers, however these powers are linked to short lifespans. Those people without psychic powers lead the tribe because they live long lives.

Chakuro, a teen with weak psychic powers, is the archivist/historian for the tribe. He goes along with a scouting party when another drifting island is spotted. The drifting island has the ruins of an abandoned city. But in a big surprise to everyone, Chakuro finds a living person on the island – a psychic girl who attempts to attack Chakuro with swords, but collapses when Chakuro defends himself with his psychic powers. The scout team brings the girl back to their mud-ship where she is hostilely interrogated by the Leaders. The Leaders see the girl as a threat and are about to imprison her when a teen who has the strongest psychic powers on the mud-ship rescues the girl from the Leaders and takes her and Chakuro back to the other island.

A lot of effort was spent on the animation, scenery and character designs in the opening episode. Not as much effort was spent on the writing which is often fairly clumsy and heavy-handed. There is also an overwhelming amount of internal narration from Chakuro which could have easily been replaced by more “show not tell”. However, there was enough of a catch in the episode to keep me around for another week, but I'm still not convinced that it will be any more than yet another Miyazaki wannabe. My initial rating is B-.
