“Mahoutsukai no Yome”, aka, “The Ancient Magus' Bride” is an adaptation of a shounen manga that has a lot of shoujo feel to it. I glanced at the manga some years ago and it didn't grab me, but the first episode of the anime turned out to be quite interesting.

Chise is a 16 year old girl who has no family, no friends, and nowhere to stay. There is something strange about her that turns people off. So she eventually accepts an offer to be sold to a bidder at an auction with the understanding that at least this way she will have a place to stay. On the way to the auction she walks through a strange building full of strange people and stranger monsters. She is put up for auction and receives some huge bids, until a tall person with long horns sprouting from his head walks up the the stage, offers 5 million pounds for Chise and wins her.

The stranger is a mage that everyone appears to fear. He tells Chise that he has bought her so that he can train her as his successor. It turns out that Chise has strong and rare powers that will enable her to become a mage. The mage uses magic to transport the two of them to his country place outside of London, removes the shackles that were put on Chise prior to the auction and welcomes her to his house as family.

The first episode was very well done with good animation, surprisingly good voice acting, and tight directing. There seems to be a lot of potential here so I'm going to stick around for a while and my initial rating is B+.
