“Urahara” is a strange bastard child of Cruncyroll and some Japanese animators who are taking way too many recreational drugs. Three extraordinarily irritating teen girls in Tokyo run a pretentious design shop which doesn't appear to get any real customers. The one customer they do get is the precursor of an alien invasion that comes to Earth to steal cultural artifacts. The three girls squeal and make pretentious statements until a giant baby bottle falls to the ground next to them. Out of the baby bottle comes a fourth girl who has a giant talking fried shrimp around her neck.. The fourth girl gives the other three some space artifacts that allow the girls to transform into magic girls and they start to fight the aliens.
Is this cute-and-noisy-stupid-girls-doing-stupid-things show a satire, or a social commentary, or a failed animation school term project? For the most part it is just bad in many, many ways. The art is “cute” but gets stale really fast. The voice acting is a major crime against humanity. There is no animation. The “cool” factor will be older than a pair of paisley bell bottom pants in no time. The whole thing feels like a three minute anime stretched out to twenty-three minutes without any thought given to what to put into the added twenty minutes.
Who knows – people might like this. I don't, and I'm not watching more. My final rating is C-.
