“Juuni Taisen” is a murder game story based upon a light novel by NisiOisin, author of the “Monogatari” series. Twelve psychopathic super killers who are similar to the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac meet for a super murder tournament every 12 years. The survivor gets a wish granted. The losers all die and are gutted. The first episode is presented from the point of view of the Boar representative who is a particularly sadistic psychopathic woman. The other killers are a mix of men and women and appear to be equally deranged.

The animation in the first episode was quite well done with detailed backgrounds, fluid motion, and detailed character designs. There was a lot of action in the episode, all of which involved massive amounts of murder and gore. There are also some magical elements along with the general sci-fi setting.

My problems with the series have to do with the premise and the characters. Murder game premises just don't interest me, particularly in cases like this where there are no likeable characters. I don't care about any of the characters and the overall concept is much too nihilistic for my tastes. I can't see how this would entertain me in any manner since I don't care which character dies next or how. So I won't be watching any more, although I suspect that the series will be very popular. My final rating is B-.

Sounds like a variation on the Akuma no Riddle theme. However, in Riddle the characters are somewhat likable, some more than others.
