The first episode of the new Tatsunoko action/hero anime, “Infini-T Force”, turned out to be lots of fun. What we have here is a full 3DCG anime that gives the impression of being a seinen tokusatsu show. The series is “inspired” by a manga about a girl who “wishes” for heroes to come into the world, but the anime version is much more edgy and adult. The common factor between the two is that the heroes are famous anime/manga heroes.

In a parallel world Gatchaman G-1 is battling robotic enemies when he and the enemies are swept across dimensions. Meanwhile in our world Emi Kaido, a 17 year old girl who rides a high speed motorcycle while wearing a jet black leather catsuit, is feeling dissatisfied with her rich and lonely life. At the same time Takashi Yoroi, a 20-something bishi, is sparring words with an even more flamboyant bishi, Damian Gray, while discussing a theoretical return to his “own world”.

Emi rides hard and fast, too fast for the city traffic conditions, but she can always make her way through without accident, until at one moment she is distracted by a light she sees in the sky and loses control of her bike while trying to avoid a collision with the old car that Takashi is driving. Takashi runs out to see if Emi is alright, but she insists on pointing towards the light from the sky that keeps on getting brighter. Takashi pushes Emi out of the way as the bright light becomes the battle debris from Gatchaman's battle in the other dimension. Gatchaman recovers from the fall, looks around at the debris, and then Takashi, now transformed into Polymar, pushes a large chunk of debris off of the unharmed Emi.

The robots that Takashi was fighting in the other dimension also survived the fall and start to attack, Gatchaman and Polymar start to defend Emi and they are joined by Tekkaman, who has become a friend of Polymar in this world. The battle ensues with the three heroes succeeding until the leader of the enemy forces approached Emi. Emi, in the meanwhile, has received a giant colourful pencil from the light in the sky and when she yells at the enemy forces the pencil activates to dissolve and remove all of the debris and robots while the enemy leader vanishes.

The pencil also seems to change time or affect time and space because afterwards none of the bystanders seem aware of what has just happened, although Emi and the three heroes, now all transformed back to their normal bishi selves, remember everything. The three attempt to question Emi but she just thanks them, calls them “Old Guys” (“o-san-tachi”), and rides off. Gatchaman is taken aback by the “o-san” comment – he has prematurely grey hair, but he is also a 20-something like the other two guys.

So the three “heroes” discuss their situation. All of them have been pulled out of their own worlds and have found themselves in our world where they find that they are still fighting the same enemies who destroyed their old worlds. They aren't 100% comfortable in our world – for example, Gatchaman can't get the hang of cellphones and keeps on breaking them. Polymar has been here longer and is more adapted but he still would like to go home if he could.

In the meanwhile the four antagonists, Z, Damian Gray, Raja Kaan, and Belle Lynn (who is the non-pigtailed Harley Quinn psycho of the show) discuss strategy and the nature of their uneasy alliance.

The next day, Emi receives a message to go to see the three heroes in what is obviously a trap. But although the heroes are there to cover, it turns out that Casshan is the one who wants to take the giant pencil from Emi.

As I wrote above, the first episode was a lot of entertaining fun. There was lots of action, smart dialog, a billion little details that hint at the backgrounds of the situations and a wonderfully retro-feeling to a very modern show. Emi's catsuit and bike alone will bring smiles to all fans of 80s and 90s girls-with-guns anime series. I am definitely looking forward to more of this and my initial rating is A.
